"BRIGHTON, Colo. — The man accused of gunning down an Adams County deputy made his first court appearance Friday afternoon.

Dreion Martise Dearing, 22, sat silently in the heavily-secured Adams County courtroom as a judge advised him of his rights. Some of his family members were present in the courtroom.

No bond was set during the arraignment."

"Judge Murphy told the defendant during Friday’s hearing that if convicted on the first-degree murder charge he could face life in prison or the death penalty.

After the hearing, District Attorney Dave Young said he still wasn’t sure if he would seek the death penalty in this case.

Dearing had a public defender appointed at the hearing.

“You have excellent attorneys. They do a very professional job here, a very difficult job. You should follow their advice and listen to them,” Judge Murphy told Dearing.

Dearing will be advised of the formal charges against him at a hearing scheduled for 10 a.m. next Wednesday.

The affidavit in the case remains sealed.

“The court is concerned the release of information, at this time, may jeopardize an ongoing criminal investigation. The court will unseal the affidavit when it deems appropriate,” Judge Murphy said."

I'm curious as to why they are not releasing a photo...thoughts?
At his first hearing, he was shielded from view by the officers guarding him, so there was no way to identify him then, either.

Maybe they fear for his life or the life of his family if his identity becomes known.

"We asked an expert why officials don't want the suspect's face shown.

"Most of the time when identities and photos are not released it’s because they are trying not to taint potential photo lineups later," retired Denver Police Sgt. Steve Warneke said.

"Either a police department or sheriff’s department knows there are witnesses out there or they know there are existence of witnesses. They don’t want the people involved in this crime and their identity and their photo to be all over the news because it could potentially taint the line up later on.""

"He emphasized investigators want to make sure they have time to find all of the witnesses to what happened. Some may not have come forward yet.

"Police and sheriffs' departments want first and foremost to get convictions in court, and you don’t want later on defense attorneys to pick a part a case because someone’s photo was plastered across the media," Warneke said."

""I think the thing that is important for us as a community to keep in mind is the most important thing here is the successful prosecution of whoever was responsible for this. If that means we have to delay seeing a picture of the person involved for a little while, let's do that for the greater good," Warneke said."

Dreion Martise Dearing appears in court charged with the murder of an Adams County Sheriff’s deputy on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018.

"Chief Judge Patrick Murphy read the charges Dreion Martise Dearing, who faces four counts of first-degree murder including murder of a peace officer after deliberation, felony murder of a peace officer, murder after deliberation and felony murder.

Dearing entered the courtroom in shackles and handcuffs wearing a red and gray jail jumpsuit with Adams County Jail written on the back. Eight beefy, well-armed sheriff’s deputies fanned out across the courtroom during the hearing.

District Attorney Dave Young said he has not decided whether to seek the death penalty for Dearing. Young has 63 days after Dearing’s arraignment to make that decision."
