Verdict reached, I’ll be in court to cover.
Took the jury ~8 hours to reach a verdict.
Courtroom is starting to fill up, very long line outside the courtroom of people attempting to get in for the verdict.
Courtroom is completely packed, not a single seat available. Just waiting on the jury now.
Gannon's family is present in the courtroom, as they have been for almost the entirety of the proceedings over the past five weeks.
It is nearly dead silent in here right now as we wait for the judge and jury.
Jury is being brought in, verdict to be read shortly.
Letecia Stauch has just been found guilty of first-degree murder for killing her 11-year-old stepson Gannon Stauch.
Stauch has been found guilty on two counts of first-degree murder, one count of tampering with a deceased human body and one count of tampering with evidence. Per Colorado law, Stauch will be given a sentence of life in prison for being found guilty of first-degree murder.
A lot of audible tears from the courtroom when Werner read the first of the four guilty verdicts.
Stauch has been found guilty of all charges. Will be sentenced to life in prison as a result.
We are going to immediate sentencing in about 30 minutes.
I’ll be at the press conference later today as well.
Sentencing about to begin, Michael Allen informed Judge Werner that family would be speaking at sentencing.
First person to speak is Stauch's former neighbor Nicole Mobley, who testified several weeks ago about Stauch attempting to pay her to lie to law enforcement. She just took time to thank the judge and prosecution.
Jeff Davenport, Al Stauch's uncle, now speaking to the court: “But this now convicted murderer did not just murder Gannon, she murdered all the love and enjoyment.. That he would have given to those he encountered throughout his life.”
Veronica Birkenstock, Landen Hiott's aunt, talking next, talked about forgiveness and that she hopes Stauch will "turn from her evil ways" in the future. "We showed up for Gannon," Birkenstock said through tears at one point.
Gannon's mom Landen is now speaking to Judge Werner: “I miss you Gannon, and I love you to the moon… I know everyday you’re with me and your sister.”
"He (Gannon) fought against someone he loved and trusted. Someone myself and Albert trusted, and loved,” Landen said. “For three years I tried to forgive her (Stauch) but I can’t, I don’t want to... She destroyed dozens of lives.”
“She searched so hard for love, when all along she had it," Landen said. "You had so much love from Laina (Gannon's sister) and Gannon, from Harley… But she has an Inability to love anyone but herself.”
"I can’t say she ruined my life, because even that would be a victory to her," Landen said.
“He defended himself still loving her. A love she never deserved for what she has done," Landen said. “Her lack of compassion shows me we were all wrong… She never loved Gannon, Laina or Harley.”
Al Stauch, Gannon's father and Letecia Stauch's former husband is now speaking with Werner. Tears coming from all around the courthouse as he begins to speak.
Al Stauch informs Werner that he will not be seeking restitution because "it would just tie me to her for the rest of my life, and I don't want that.”
Al Stauch just read a short bit that was written by his daughter Laina: “You do not do that to people, especially your step kids. It is never alright t do these things.”
alright to do these things.***.
Al and Landen just apologized to each other in court for "allowing (Stauch) to manipulate them.”
Allen just informed Werner that he would be requesting the max penalty on all four charges. Allen also stated they would be dismissing Stauch's second case (where she allegedly attempted to escape from jail) so that she can be put in DOC custody "as soon as possible.”
Stauch declined to give a statement on the advice of her attorneys. Werner is taking 10 minutes to write his comments before he gives the sentence.
Werner is now sentencing Stauch, but before so he gave a brief statement saying "Without hesitation that the facts in this case are he most horrific I have ever seen," and as a result will be giving the maximum penalty on all charges.
Werner just sentenced Stauch to two life sentences without parole, 12 years in prison for tampering with a deceased human body and 18 months for tampering with physical evidence. The attempted jail escape case has been dismissed.
