I suppose there are many reasons why a defendant wouldn't want to be in court. Fear, or maybe aggressive and can't be trusted or simply misbehaving! It's good to know justice would still be served - with or without their presence.

I'm pretty sure he has to be declared competent to stand trial for the trial to take place. Meaning he is able to be seated in the court room and have a basic understanding of how the court processes work to allow him to aid in his defense.
If he hadn't been declared competent to stand trial, they would reevaluate him until he is. And continue with the trial then. He can't just decide to sleep in and not show up.
