Very lengthy but it looks like some good steps are being taken to help.

I mean, great, but without any money being dedicated, laws being passed (eg required reporting to Namus), etc, this is a big pile of performative paper, whereas and wherein other substantive activities are not designated, funded, or proclaimed.

(No offense to you, @dotr , appreciate your posting this!)

Hopefully media will take advantage of this new initiative, promoting cases like Jon's might help shake the money tree in the direction of MPs investigations!

What we know is that marijuana dealers at that time often also dealt in other illicit drugs, such as cocaine, hashish, LSD, mushrooms, and peyote. Also, sometimes the bad quality marijuana was laced with things like PCP....not sure but the car with the windows down in the rain, which disappeared a few days later, makes me wonder if maybe he decided to try something harder than marijuana, perhaps a hallucinogen. - had a bad trip alone and ended up dying from exposure somewhere. Someone could have opportunistically stolen the car after seeing it there for a couple of days. Wild speculation, just another possible aspect...
either way
rest in peace

Nederland was a hippie enclave beginning in the late 1960s. It has been a happening place ever since. Lots of living off the grid, lots of weed. He might have wanted out of the KOA in the heat and being at a higher elevation would be much more comfortable in summer heat. I wonder if he had an accident or had altitude issues and had an accident. If he met with foul play, it is not a surprise that his car was never found as there are lots of places to hid things out on people's properties.

Circumstances of Disappearance

Jon, who is originally from Orinda, California, arrived in Boulder, CO on July 22, 1981, planning to enroll as a student at the University of Colorado. He picked up a hitchhiker, who was later interviewed by sheriff's detectives, and Jon spent his first night at the KOA Kampground in Boulder.

The next day, Jon called his father asking for money until the dorms opened. His father told him to open a PO box so that he could send him money; Jon said he would call him the next day. The phone call to his father was placed at a 7-11 convenience store in the vicinity of 28th St. and Baseline in Boulder, CO. The last phone call he made was to a friend on July 24th from a pay phone in Nederland, in the mountains west of Boulder.

On July 26, law enforcement located Jon's vehicle: a beige, two door, 1981 Subaru with CA license plate 1CPK105, with its windows down, unoccupied, while it was raining. However, nothing appeared suspicious, so they left the vehicle where they found it. When the deputy returned a few days later, the car was gone. It still has not been located. Jon has been declared legally dead as of March 1983

There is a podcast referenced above which includes a lengthy interview with Jon's sister. It contains a wealth of additional information that puts the above blurb in perspective. It is well worth listening to.
