FREDERICK, Colo. -- Family friends of the Watts family say they're dumbfounded, confused, lost. Speaking to Denver7, the man who hosted Chris Watts and his little girls for a kid’s birthday party just days before they vanished said Thursday he is still trying to process everything that's happened since.

Jeremy Lindstrom offered a new perspective on who Chris Watts was, before the man confessed to allegedly murdering his wife and the couple's two daughters.

Vigil tonight for slain NC native and her children as questions swirl about motive :: WRAL.com

Condor observed that, throughout the interview, Christopher Watts’ arms were crossed and he was rocking back and forth.

“It’s like he’s cradling himself. He’s trying to soothe himself a little bit, and the rocking comes from soothing. It comes from infancy, that babies rock and hold themselves to feel better. He’s trying to make himself feel better in this situation,” he said.

Condor also noted that Christopher Watts’ choice of words were stilted and “sort of intellectualized.”

“He’s what we call isolation affect. He’s cutting off his feelings and using these fancy words,” Condor said.

Father accused of killing family could face death penalty

Decker said the case for the death penalty is strong. In Colorado, prosecutors must be able to establish at least one of 17 aggravating factors.

This case meets at least three, he said. Watts is accused of killing more than one person. His victims are two young children. And one of the victims was pregnant.

"There may be other mitigating circumstances, however, that also apply," Decker said. "Cooperating with police is one of those mitigating factors. If Watts led police to his wife and children's bodies, it could potentially save his life.

Shanann revealed the pregnancy to her husband in a video posted on Facebook in June. He smiles after seeing the positive test and says, 'I guess when you really want something it happens'.

In a second video, uploaded to Facebook a month before, Shanann is seen speaking about how serious health problems had thrust her into the 'darkest time of my life' before she met Watts, who she calls 'wonderful'.

A third, also from June, shows toddler Bella singing about her father, calling him 'her hero' and saying how he helped her 'grow up big and strong'.

Watts case raises questions about Colorado's lack of fetal homicide law

Accusations that a Frederick man killed his pregnant wife and two young daughters is prompting questions about Colorado’s lack of a law allowing homicide charges in the violent deaths of fetuses.

While prior violent crimes have prompted debate in Colorado, proposals to allow homicide charges in the violent deaths of fetuses have been stymied by debate about how to avoid infringing on abortion rights.

'He's being fake': Body language experts say Chris Watts showed telltale signs of guilt and deception during interviews
Body language expert Lillian Glass told HollywoodLife that Chris's phoniness was quite evident as he spoke too much and was giving out too much information. "He is shrugging his shoulders, which shows he was lying... He smiles and chuckles during the plea, which is very contrived and also reveals he is being fake."
However, Chris's performance did not fool the experts. Traci Brown told KDVR that she recognized signs of deception immediately. "He rolled his lips back over his teeth a lot. You see his lips disappear? That's a telltale sign for someone who knows more than they're saying. He clearly knew then and he was trying to hold back and the whole thing unraveled on him."

Frederick police say they have 2-3 days of interviews to finish in Chris Watts case

Chris Watts is in protective custody and being isolated from other inmates at the Weld County jail because of the publicity the case has received and say they still have several days of work to do before Monday’s deadline for charges to be filed.

The Weld County coroner is conducting at least one autopsy related to the deaths of the Watts family Friday.

Frederick police also told Denver7 Friday that they believe they have two or three more days of interviews to conduct related to the case.

WELD COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)– The defense attorney for the man accused of murdering his pregnant wife and two young children has petitioned the court to collect DNA samples during the autopsies. Those same documents suggest the victims may have been strangled.

Chris Watts was identified as the sole suspect in the triple homicide investigation, and appeared in court on Thursday. In court documents filed by the state, the bodies of two of the victims in Frederick were in an oil well filled with crude oil for four days.

The autopsies were scheduled to begin Friday. In the court documents filed on Friday afternoon, Watts’ attorneys filed a motion that “an expert be present at the autopsies to take swabs consistent with what” the DNA expert recommends.

That expert, Richard Eikelenboom, stated, “I have a lot of experience taking samples from dead bodies getting good results after strangulation.”

Eikelenboom is a forensic scientist who has testified as a DNA expert in trials across Colorado.

Watts is scheduled to appear in court at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Man Accused of Slaying Pregnant Wife & Kids Is 'Scott Peterson, Just Less Charismatic': Profiler

“He has an incredibly large ego,” says Dale Yeager, a criminal analyst and forensic profiler who is unconnected with the case. “He was very convincing in front of the camera, which means he really comes off as sociopathic. That doesn’t mean he is mentally ill, just that he has a personality defect.”

Drawing a parallel between Watts’ case and that of Scott Peterson, who notoriously murdered his pregnant wife and then repeatedly gave interviews, Yeager says, “He’s Scott Peterson, just less charismatic.”
