Connecticut school district on lockdown after shooting report at a Newtown elemen #8

This is actually one I am working on right now. According to the school district, all of the above get thrown under the blanket title ASD. But, then again, the district can't make a full diagnosis unless the parent allows them to be fully evaluated. That's here, doesn't apply everywhere.

When my nephew was diagnosed with ADHD through his psychiatrist, they were told that the doctor "considers" it an autism spectrum disorder.

Frankly, I am not sure if it is or not, or if it is up to the doctor whether to include it as an ASD. A lot of kids, while they're waiting for a diagnosis get termed as Pervasive Developmental Delay - Not Otherwise Specified. This is definitely on the autism spectrum, as far as I know, at least that's what I was told when my son was diagnosed with it. Later that became classical autism, for us. If he had been diagnosed with ADD instead, he might not have been on the spectrum anymore, but with the original PDD-NOS diagnosis, he would have been considered to have been on the spectrum at one point or still be ASD because of the original diagnosis.

My son has always been on the spectrum, my nephew was diagnosed outright as having ADHD, but my son's best friend was diagnosed as PDD-NOS, then rediagnosed as having ADD, and he is still referred to in current records as having an autism spectrum disorder.

And they wonder why we say it is so hard to even find out what is wrong with our kids, let alone have them treated?:banghead:

So, maybe they would assign SOME ADHD to the ASD spectrum, depending on the specific symptoms (like the ones that are also very common with Aspergers) and others would remain their own separate dx?

And yeah, I raise an eyebrow at the blanket thing, too, but OTOH, there are such a wide variety of symptoms to both ADHD and Aspergers...AND...they share SOME of them.....in SOME cases.....BUT....SOME of those same behaviors are found in other non-spectrum personality disorders.

No wonder it's so hard to dx our kiddos!

Sorry for the OT but in a way it's not because although the Aspergers dx for AL seems to be cooborated by several sources, I still question if that was the "right" dx. Ya know, with all my vast medical/psych background. Lol.

It is my understanding that for most of the mental/behavioral disorders there are no tests (such as a blood test, etc). They are diagnosed based on symptoms. Symptoms overlap in many of the disorders, making it hard to diagnose.

Also if it were suggested to NL that her son get psychiatric testing and she refused, a lot was missed.

I work in one setting for "behaviorally challenged" and in another for Autistic kids and IMO this kid had psych issues that were (apparently) not addressed and not ASD as his brother allegedly stated. I don't see this as ASD at all.

His Asperger's diagnosis comes from many sources. I don't have any doubt he was diagnosed with his condition. His symptoms appear to fit the diagnosis as well. He could have developed other psychiatric conditions on top of it as he got older.

All of those sources are articles that stem from what his brother allegedly told police when they questioned him and "former classmates". No, it's been mentioned by a variety of people now, including someone who taught him for 3 years. Many of them linked within the last 5-6 pages.

IMO we will hear that AL had a new diagnosis sometime during the last 3 or so years. I honestly believe that NL would have had counseling of some sort for him. She was an intelligent woman, and also a caring mother, who saw him on an almost daily basis. I don't think she was ignorant or in denial.

It is the same black civic we see in the photos with police tape around it at the scene and the same black civic photographed being taken from the scene on the flatbed. Yes, it has been widely reported as Nancy Lanza's car and identified as the car the suspect drove to Sandy Hook school. It is the same car police in the audio in my post above read the license plate of "possible suspect's vehicle" and that license plate number matches all the photos and video of the black civic. It is also registered to someone who is not the shooter or Nancy Lanza.

Just a thought-the divorce records state Peter Lanza is to provide a car for AL so he or NL may have recently bought it from a non-dealer and not had the title and registration transferred to them yet. In my state one has 30 days after purchase to transfer it to their name.

That would still be high functioning when we are talking about autism spectra.

I think that would be more than autism. That almost sounds like paranoid schizophrenia. Autistic kids tend to be too literal, not nonsensical. At least my daughter is, as are the kids in her school-sponsored social group.

The registration on that car is valid until 9/14/2014. Does that say anything about when it was registered?

"Registrations must be renewed biannually.

...Registrations expire upon transfer of ownership. The new owner must re-apply.

does anyone really think he really "sat" in his basement for two years doing nothing? i believe he immersed himself in an alternate reality that he eventually choose to act out for real.

I think that is true. We have two post-HS boys who love video games who we have had to pry out of the basement because they would rather be playing the games than interacting in the real world. However, they have actually met some people online in the gaming community that they have since met in real life. Both had jobs and paid for their own subscriptions, so we had no control over that. One lives with his mom, so it will be up to her to ask him to leave.

My oldest step-son lived with us and we finally pushed him from the nest. He now has a job in construction and a roommate. He doesn't play Call of Duty all day and night anymore.

My point is that there are a lot of boys who, if are not held accountable, will spend a lot of their time in "the basement" or their private room playing these games rather than grow up and leave the nest. And plenty of grown men too!

Nearly all of these people will not go on to shoot up a mall or a school, etc.

Our biggest fear was that they were/are not moving on in life, not that they were becoming violent shooters.

Something was different with AL. I wonder if NL could tell or if she was in denial or what.

Yeah, I think three different years have been stated as far as a separation (1998, 2001, and 2006). I have to wonder though if that went on so long that Adam just accepted it as normal, but a 'divorce' opened his eyes that dad was not coming back. However, I tend to think there was something else behind Adam not wanting to communicate with his dad and brother and that a lot more going on than that was problematic than just the divorce.

Did Adam think it was his fault that his parents marriage broke up because of his condition? Did Adam believe that his father abandoned him, no longer wanting to support him, moving on to another family with a new wife?

The car is registered to a 42 year old career criminal (several previous drug and burglary charges) who is from Norwalk CT currently living in Miami, FL.

Just throwing this info out there because it seemed odd to me. I am absolutely confident that the lone shooter is AL so please don't insinuate that I'm questioning that.

I found some newer reporting some of you might want to read..this seems to say AL's video games were interactive with other gamers


Lanza had two bedrooms in the house, including one in the basement in which he kept his computer, his computer video games and other possessions. Lanza had thousands of dollars worth of video games and preferred to play on his computer with other anonymous gamers, investigators said.

By destroying his hard drive investigators will not be able to trace what games he was playing, who he was playing with and, more importantly, whether he gave anybody forewarning of the horrific violence he unleashed. Anything he may have written on his computer that could have provided a glimpse into Lanza's thinking also would be irretrievable.

They may still be able to find out who he was playing with from information from the game servers. The people that run those servers ban people by their IP addresses all the time. So there must be some other information stored on them, I would think.
