Regarding the CV/snowstorm analogy, any planning for kids being out of school or caring for elderly parents will need to cover a much longer time than a snowstorm. Not to mention planning in case YOU are the one who catches CV!! Isolation, lost wages, etc. We can’t plan for everything, but we probably need more supplies than for 3 days and to maybe figure out with friends Plan A and B.

For example, we are healthy senior citizens. But if we get sick and have to stay isolated at home, we will need someone to drop off homemade chicken soup and other essentials at our door....ring the bell and run.

My heart is breaking over this.
It's already on the Chinese news.
My mind is racing with what's next for these innocent animals.
I hope I don't get a time out here.
How on earth can a society decide that throwing innocent animals off roof tops to their horrific deaths be considered anything but Barbarians?
I can only beg.
Please China. Stop.

A pet dog is in quarantine after testing “weak positive” for coronavirus
From CNN’s Pauline Lockwood in Hong Kong
Hong Kong authorities have placed a pet dog into quarantine after it tested a “weak positive” for the novel coronavirus, officials said on Friday.

A dog was handed over to the Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) after its owner was infected with the coronavirus, the department said in a statement.

Preliminary tests from the dog’s oral, nasal and rectal samples tested a “weak positive” but the “dog does not have any relevant symptoms," the AFCD said.

“At present, the AFCD does not have evidence that pet animals can be infected with COVID-19 virus or can be a source of infection to people,” the statement stresses. “The department will conduct close monitoring of the above dog and collect further samples for testing to confirm if the dog has really been infected with the virus or this is a result of environmental contamination of the dog's mouth and nose.

South Korea coronavirus cases surpass 2,000

I know what you mean about a “correction.” But man I realize the effects are going to really impact a lot of people. Will we emerge better or worse?
I'm very concerned about our retirement funds, and being older and retired, we certainly don't have the years ahead of us to make up for what's been lost thus far. Hoping and praying for the best and certainly praying for the scientists, healthcare workers and those infected!

On a positive note, learning that they can now do a CT scan and find characteristics of Covid 19 makes me feel a little better.

Considering info that the U.S. is short on testing kits, this could diagnosis more cases, with greater accuracy and avoid false negatives and/or letting people who are false negative walk off to infect more people.

It's not as easy as it sounds. CT scanners are running night and day taking care of ER patients. Adding them as a screening tool is just going to impact other pateints who have non-COVID life threatening problems.

“This is a picture of CDC’s laboratory test kit for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). CDC is shipping the test kits to laboratories CDC has designated as qualified, including U.S. state and local public health laboratories, Department of Defense (DOD) laboratories and select international laboratories. The test kits are bolstering global laboratory capacity for detecting SARS-CoV-2.”

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

There should be concern about the limited number of test kits. How can an illness be treated, and how can data be collected if there is no actual confirmation that a person has the virus. Stats will be skewed, others will be exposed without realization, treatment could be delayed. Proper testing is the front line, as demonstrated by many other countries around the world.

Single coronavirus case exposes a bigger failure to track spread

The discovery that a California woman was likely infected with the novel coronavirus by a previously unrecognized case in her community is proof of an enormous problem the country is facing at the moment, according to public health experts. It’s clear that the virus is spreading undetected in the United States — but how broadly it’s spreading is an utter mystery.

Before Thursday, a perfect storm of problems in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s development of test kits — and the agency’s reluctance to expand its recommendation of who should be tested given the limited availability of kits — meant very little testing has been done in the country. As of Wednesday, the CDC said that 445 people had been tested — a fraction of the number of tests that other countries have run.

PREACH.

12:10 pm: Hyundai Motor closes factory after worker tests positive
Hyundai Motor has shut a factory in South Korea's city of Ulsan, after a worker tested positive for the new coronavirus, according to a Reuters report.

The South Korean automaker has five car factories in Ulsan, which accounts for nearly 30% of its global production, the report said. Ulsan is less than an hour away from Daegu, where a large number of cases in the country was traced to.

Cases in South Korea have continually spiked, surpassing 2,000 on Friday.

Where are you sourcing “throwing innocent animals off roof tops to their horrific deaths”? Your link said nothing like that. And calling the Chinese barbarians when we read daily on WS about unthinkable acts toward children in the U.S.? Sorry, not sorry but that is not acceptable. Our society has no standing to judge another for animal abuse when we treat our children so poorly.

I have no crystal ball.
I will say.
I am very dismayed about the lack of common sense and education in so much of our world.
My eyes have been opened.
What I see is very, very sad.
I can hope that the reality of how many on this planet have no idea how to live in concert with our fellow inhabitants, changes. For the better.
I will not spend one penny, visiting a country that eats dogs.
This is seriously my opinion.
For just me. It breaks my heart.

I teach in Beijing half a year each year, but not this year, for obvious reasons. I don't think you know what you are talking about regarding calling the Chinese "barbarians." That is an insult to a fine people.

Coronavirus-Associated Pneumonia Identified with CT

I saw this tonight, that COVID19 can be diagnosed with a CT scan. Might be faster.

My understanding is that it takes a while (several days after symptoms begin) for the lungs to show the symptoms on CT scan though. Sorry no idea where that link went.

So the CT could be faster to diagnose if you’ve already been having symptoms, but it wouldn’t help for people who are asymptotic. MOO.
