The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.
There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.
New virus in China ‘will have infected hundreds'
Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.
Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.
But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

That must be a smart virus to work upside down.

The virus started in Nov/Dec 2019 Wuhan. It was widespread in China in early Jan/20. WHO warned the world on January 31.

That was Summer in Australia. By Fall in Australia, and Spring in North America, the virus was in both countries. NA is predicting lower transmission in the Summer months, and an increase in transmission in the Fall (Oct. if it is the same as 1918 2nd wave).

Good question - will Australia also experience a stronger second wave in the Fall/Winter, or will that be their first and only wave of infections?

I'm curious to see what that looks like in Australia Spring and NA fall.

Yes, many scientists believe that an individual’s DNA is the reason why some people are having little or no coronavirus symptoms and others end up seriously ill or deceased. There must be a genetic reason why so many younger people with no health issues are dying from it and often very quickly. A lot of studies going on all over the world to understand all aspects of the virus and why it affects people in so many different ways. It is going to be very interesting to learn more about it.

Some claim that European people with ancestors who survived the bubonic plague have more immunity. That's not apparent in the death rate in the EU, but anything is possible.

Coronavirus: Doctor who warned Boris Johnson about lack of protective equipment dies from Covid-19

...
A consultant who warned Boris Johnson about the need for more personal protective equipment (PPE) to support NHS staff during the coronavirus crisis has died from the disease.

Abdul Mabud Chowdhury, 53, made a direct plea to the prime minister in a Facebook post last month, when he asked Mr Johnson to “ensure urgently personal protective equipment (PPE) for each and every NHS worker”.
...
Mr Chowdhury, who worked as a consultant urologist at Homerton Hospital in east London, said in his post: “People appreciate us and salute us for our rewarding job which are very inspirational but I would like to say we have to protect ourselves and our families/kids in this global disaster/crisis by using appropriate PPE and remedies.”

The prime minister, who is currently being treated for Covid-19 at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, has repeatedly come under pressure to address the issue of PPE being made available to all frontline workers tackling the pandemic.

In late March, 3,963 doctors penned an open letter in The Sunday Times, saying that they were “putting their lives on the line every day” by working without adequate protection.

It is absolutely scandalous that men and women are dying because of not having proper protection equipment.

Hugely comprehensive, (IMO) very impressive article from the New York Times, on everything from the state of the nation, meds to (hospital) beds, etc., etc....

I say this as a person with zero medical knowledge, but I wonder how that can be true? The bubonic plague was a bacterial infection, not viral. Antibiotics would cure it if it emerged today.

Experimental drug remdesivir shows potential for coronavirus, early research suggests
Early research shows that an experimental treatment for the coronavirus may help very sick patients improve their breathing, though experts caution that more studies are needed before the drug, remdesivir, can be recommended.

It is absolutely scandalous that men and women are dying because of not having proper protection equipment.

Even though most countries knew in early January that China had an out of control epidemic, most countries did not react until they discovered that they too could not contain the spread. Then it was a pandemic and every country is behind the 8 ball today. No one was prepared, no one has an excuse.

I admit I have concerns about this.

Older people who stayed home to avoid the virus will not be able to get an immunity card. It's like being punished for doing the right thing - and it's a "legit" way to discriminate against older people because they are not immune.

I also worry that people will purposely try to get the virus so that they can get an immunity card, taking a risk that could kill them (or spread to others while they are infected).

I am uneasy about the idea of this card, but perhaps it's a reality we need to accept and my fears are unwarranted. ? IDK.

jmo

Tonight on her show, Martha McCallum asked Dr. Fauci about this, and she raised the concern of discrimination against those who can't get an immunity card. And she mentioned that some people might try to get COVID-19 just to get the immunity card and get a job.

There is a lot of confusion about the virus, and people are grasping onto almost anything to believe that they have special powers when it comes to infection. In the beginning, there was speculation whether Asians were more vulnerable to the virus. That proved to be untrue, but might explain why the rest of the world did nothing while the virus spread to the non-Asian community.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/south-korea-coronavirus-covid19-reactivated-positive-1.5529066
''South Korean officials on Friday reported that 91 patients thought cleared of the new coronavirus had tested positive again.

Jeong Eun-kyeong, director of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), told a briefing that the virus may have been "reactivated" rather than the patients being re-infected.

South Korean health officials said it remains unclear what is behind the trend, with epidemiological investigations still underway.

The prospect of people being re-infected with the virus is of international concern, as many countries are hoping that infected populations will develop sufficient immunity to prevent a resurgence of the pandemic.''

Blood tests show 14% of people are now immune to covid-19 in one town in Germany

https://www.land.nrw/sites/default/...chenergebnis_covid19_case_study_gangelt_0.pdf

"An existing immunity of approx. 14% (anti-SARS-CoV2 IgG positive, specificity of the method>, 99%) was found. About 2% of the people had a current SARS-CoV-2 infection determined using the PCR method. The overall infection rate (current infection or already gone through) was approximately 15%. The mortality rate (case fatality rate) based on the total number of infected people in the community of Gangelt is approx. 0.37% with the preliminary data from this study. "
[google translate of German to English]

"The presence of previously infected people in the community, Streeck and colleagues believe, will reduce the speed at which the virus can move in the area. They also outline a process by which social distancing can be slowly unwound, especially given hygienic measures, like handwashing, and isolating and tracking the sick. They think if people avoid getting big doses of the virus—which can happen in hospitals or via close contact with someone infected—fewer people will become severely ill, “while at the same time developing immunity” that can help finally end the outbreak."
BBM
Germany's strategy makes sense to develop "herd immunity" (60% of the population with immunity from exposure) especially if a vaccine is still many months away.

Older and more vulnerable populations need to be protected from the virus. This will happen once they get a vaccine. In the meantime... if they can lessen the impact in anyway possible, on the general population that is helpful, too.
