The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.
There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.
New virus in China ‘will have infected hundreds'
Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.
Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.
But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

Last night I saw a post about nicotine patches being tried on COVID patients. I said eek! Going to order from Amazon now.
They just freaking showed up! Less than 24 hours.
Wow! I am shocked!
I stopped smoking in November, I will be able to stop the patches in about 4 weeks, maybe less.
How the heck did they arrive so quickly?
I've been waiting for masks for 5 weeks!
Moo

Anything coming from Asia is taking forever. I've been wait 3 weeks for special light bulbs and Japanese skin care.

depends where they come from usually
masks are likely from China so take longer, plus they have supply problems right now
I'm waiting for masks too

One principal in Florida has gone the extra mile to celebrate the high school's graduating seniors amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has upended time-honored teenage traditions like proms and graduations.

I wish I knew something you can do about it.

IDK
This post is a reply to the older person that is feeling blah - know more than likely alot of people young and old are feeling blah at times as well. It is a stressful time we are all going through. What may help is to limit ones self from the Covid news to once or twice a day. Have a morning routine taking care of your shower, hair, teeth and a healthy bit to eat. Do some light arms, legs, stretches or go on a short walk, remember to inhale fresh air hold it then breath slowly out several times. Oxygen is good! Order a new magazine or a new tea flavor. Sort out a stash of pictures and order a photo album if needed. There are many fun things on the internet such as a tour of flower gardens in the US or various countries. Sit outside or by the window and watch/listen to birds then try to identify them. Find your state bird? Put a feeder up, a bird bath. Write the name of the birds down. Keep a fun list of to do! If you have no appetite eat small amounts of healthy food, cottage cheese with canned or fresh peaches, cup of soup, drink enough water. Call a friend, facetime family write a story from your childhood for a grandchild or someone you love. Remember to accept it is ok to feel blah nothing is wrong with you. Sometimes a person needs to pull themselves together and make small changes

Before antibiotics TB sufferers who could afford it would go to fancy Swiss recovery centres. Was this because of the high altitudes and clean air? Did that use to work?
I think there were many theories about cures: fresh air was one, altitude another, but another was living in a warm, dry climate, so Keats was sent to Italy and DH Lawrence went to Mexico (but both died of it). I don't think any of those ideas really made any difference in survival.

A key element was understanding that it was contagious. TB isn't virulantly infectious, but because the sufferer could carry on a long time, they could infect dozens of susceptible others. Once patients could be diagnosed and were required to be isolated from other people, case numbers slowly went down, over many decades.

The other key was better standards of living, so stronger immune systems . So prevelence dramatically declined (except for, eg, street living drug addicts etc) long before a cure was found. I don't think people had 'herd immunity' to it.

She was a repeat offender who did this before. What is wrong with this person?

It's happening more than I would ever have thought. There's practically a war between the "mask-wearers/social distancers" and "the others." If anyone had the courage to study and interview "the others," some will be mentally ill, some will be believers that this is a hoax/caused by 5G or whatever, some are just belligerent.

Meanwhile:

I'm glad they took this into consideration.

Coronavirus in Ohio: DeWine says 'breakthrough' will increase testing six-fold by late May

The governor also announced Friday that foster children who will age out of the system upon turning 18 will be allowed to remain in foster homes with state funding. Older youths will be allowed to stay in another foster program after turning 21. “This will ensure no child leaves foster care during the pandemic without a safe place to call home,” he said.

Please be careful with the nicotine theory. Go read the actual scientific literature on this one. Find out the dosing and method of employment - and why it is even considered a treatment

As you point out, those measures did give some people longer life. Dry and hot with lots of UV would help protect staff, and people could therefore get good nutrition and body therapies that lowered anxiety and stress. It's known that anxiety and stress does not help people's immune systems. So pampering, lowering bacterial load, good nutrition did improve outcomes for the wealthy over the slum dwellers.

Warm, dry climates did have lower levels of TB, so there's that.

The contemporary comparison is that some of us can work from home, sanitize our houses and groceries, completely avoid interaction with breathing humans and...essential workers cannot. The unemployed could stay home, but many are treating this as an unexpected vacation. Yesterday's post about the workers who were angry at their boss for getting paycheck loans from the government floored me.

Mississippi Update:
Transition from stay at home order to safer at home order. It actually does very little though, which I think is very good. Bars, gyms, salons remain closed. Gatherings over 10 prohibited. Restaurants remain curbside pickup. Retail allowed to open at 50% capacity. In place for two weeks but could be amended. Governor Tate Reeves is still speaking so I will have to say MOO. Will add a link when available. Good job, Gov. Reeves.

Well, I was feeling hopeful until I read this. My hopefulness was based on the fact that the entire world is working on this and cooperating with each other. To read that we are not part of that cooperative effort depresses me to no end.
