Here, in Arizona, we seem to being transitioning into a phase where there are more vaccines/appointments than people willing to take them. One argument I frequently hear is "why get vaccinated if I still have to mask, distance, avoid, etc?" This gets reinforced when our Director of Health Services, who was among the first to be fully vaxed, appears in PSAs, in a mask, outside, telling people to get vaccinated. I'm interested in how others feel about this. It seems like the messaging is going to have to change.

You can still catch and spread the virus if you have the vaccine, is the current understanding. But if you catch it, you won't get seriously sick or die from it.

If you care about your own health only, you can get vaccinated and go maskless and possibly spread the virus if you catch it and don't realize it. You will keep the spread going, but who care since you yourself won't get sick - if that's your attitude about it.

Or you could care about the community at large, get vaccinated so you don't get sick and die from the virus, continue with safety measures....and then the virus will eventually die out. That seems like the goal we all want, imo.

All true. I'm concerned about the practical aspects of convincing the hold outs, and if that's even possible. Whether we like it, or not, a message that essentially says "Get vaccinated and live like it's 2020," going to fall on way too many deaf ears.

still worried about the variants.... just feel unsafe in general and when I think about it, depressed! back to thinking one day at a time.

The communication regarding everything about the virus has been terrible from the start. I admire Fauci and see him making such effort to spread information, but I think he talks above most people's attention spans.

Biden has a knack, imo, but too many people refuse to listen to him, unfortunately, since they've chosen another "side" as if the virus cares.

They needed a better communications team from the start. It's almost too late now.

I also feel a bit frustrated here. There are loads of Americans who don't speak English as a first language, and might not be, for whatever reason, very tech oriented. The outreach to them to provide them with accurate information and support has been...not great. We need more bilingual mobile vaccine clinics.

I live in a multi-lingual neighborhood and there has been some effort to get out in the neighborhoods, speaking the right language. I've seen pop-up clinics twice now - with literally hand-written signs around the neighborhood to let people know they can come for appointments and won't be turned away.

But, I agree, that's not enough. I hope more is going on that I don't know about because I'm not the target audience anyway.

I've always thought they should've administered the vaccine literally block by block, at least in the cities. I think that would've been faster and easier in the long run.

This so true, and has caused damage on both extremes. The CDC coming out against what they call "Hygiene Theater," is a great start, but there also needs to be outreach to those that are driving alone, in a car, with a mask on. No one resisting a vaccine is going to listen to a lone, masked driver hector them about "science."

I agree with Jennifer Rubin's opinions on this issue. She writes about an Axios-Ipsos poll following the pause in the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after a tiny number of women developed blood clots after being vaccinated.

“Ninety-one percent of Americans have heard of the pause, showing a clear breakthrough of the issue in our collective consciousness in a very short period of time,” the poll reported on Tuesday. “Nearly the same number, 88%, feel the FDA and CDC are acting responsibly by recommending a pause in the [Johnson & Johnson] vaccine (among those that have heard of the pause).”

(snip)

The number of those who do not want the vaccine (roughly 20 percent) has been immovable since January, suggesting these people ... are impervious to reason and facts.

I couldn't get past the paywall, but there was some elaboration on her twitter feed. The problem with requiring a vaccine passport to enter a restaurant would seem to imply that such documentation would be simple to forge. It seems far fetched to think they would be equipped to require something more secure than a drivers license, which can be had for $100.

I'm sorry, I was headed to another errand and I forgot!

I finally became eligible and got an app't for April 27. I cannot wait. I'll still probably confine myself to the house plus we're on lockdown anyway here for a few weeks. I worry because someone at my husband's work was infected and my husband is not eligible yet for the vaccine.

Advisory panel recommends resuming the J&J vaccine for adults

April 23, 2021

Health advisors for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recommended resuming the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

A government advisory panel deliberated Friday on the issue after the CDC and FDA recommended a pause of the one-dose vaccine on April 13.

The recommendation, if accepted by the CDC, will effectively reinstate the use of the vaccine. The CDC generally follows its advisers’ recommendations.

ETA: I'm two weeks in since my J & J shot and nothing adverse to report. Feeling blessed - #one_and_done

I was fully vaccinated by 3/06.
Tested negative on a 4/03
Tested positive on 4/14

So here I am. Feeling a strange type of illness.
Looking forward to returning to work next week.

Hope you are feeling better soon....so sorry you are a breakthrough case, but it's great that you feel you can go to work next week. It's likely the vaccine prevented you from hospitalization or worse, God forbid.
