I'm a friend of Annie's, and I've been following all three of these threads religiously. We were in the same program at the NIH and were very close the first couple of summers that we were there. Unfortunately, we've lost touch a bit the past couple of years, but I do have some insight that I thought I would share.

I read some speculation that an ex-boyfriend of Annie's or ex-girlfriend of Jon's might be involved. Annie was with Jon even before I met her in 2005, so this scenario doesn't seem likely to me. The person would have to be harboring severe jealousy for over 5 years. Annie was completely devoted to Jon even then. When the rest of us would be going out to bars at night, Annie would stay home to go online and play scrabble with Jon since he wasn't with us during the summer.

The reports of Dr. Schlessinger's past sexual harassment made me sick. If he was harassing Annie, I can picture her being the only person to stand up to him. When we all introduced ourselves in our program, Annie described herself as "I may be small, but I carry a big stick", meaning she didn't let herself get stepped on or pushed around. She was very, very sweet but also very feisty. I could also picture the scenario of an unstable person taking a fancy to her, since she was always so friendly to everyone.

I looked through all of Annie's other friends on facebook, and Xiao Hung is not listed.

I hope that's helpful. Reading all of your posts has been a comfort to me and given me something to do since I've been going crazy with worry the past few days.

I just wanted to say I am so sorry for the lose of your friend.I hope they catch whoever is responsible for doing this.

No matter what...the list of suspects is relatively small.

Schlessinger.
Bennett.
Other Professors.
Students allowed in Amistad with proper ID card.
Maintenance crew.
Campus Police.

Should we add Schlessinger's wife to that list? I could envision her as someone who possibly might have both opportunity and motive.

Perhaps the media mispelled Xiao's name. I believe it is Hong Xiao. Google searches do show this person as being at Yale. The person is a female.

Welcome to WS, Hopefulinca~ I am so very sorry it has to be under such circumstances. First and foremost, I would like to offer my condolences to you on the loss of your friend. While you try to find some kind of peace and comfort in such an awful situation, please know there are people all over the world praying for all of you who knew and loved Annie.

I am certain this has been horrific for all of her friends and family especially the saddness and sorrow today has brought for everyone. I cannot imagine the magnitude of loss for Jon and how he must be suffering tonight as it was to be the beginning instead of the end. Bless his heart.

Thank you for your insight into Annie and Jon's lives. We sit here with heavy hearts not having known either of them and try to piece together what could have happened in order to bring some justice to this crime. It is very helpful when someone can shine some light on where to look for answers.

Hugs~
SS~

But she DID show up for work that morning. So why would Bennett say she hadn't shown up for work? Did he mean she didn't show up at a particular place in the Amistad building?

I know! That was my original question way back when we first saw Schlessinger's story about the email. If she had a private office that she locked her purse in, wouldn't people who were concerned about her absence knock and knock and then have someone come open the door? If she didn't have a private office, (and, really, do grad students at Yale have private offices? ) how could no one have seen her purse?
I just don't get it.

The point I was trying to make in my earlier post is that she did her paid work for Bennett at his lab in Sterling. I don't know that he would have checked out a lab at Amistad where she did her own research.

The Chronicle of Higher Education's news blog has a little item on Joseph Schlessinger. You may know him as the "internationally known researcher and head of the pharmacology department at Yale University" famous for his "his work in figuring out how information flows between a cell surface and the cell -- studies credited with laying the groundwork for several treatments for cancer".

Or you may know him now as the jerk-*advertiser censored* who allegedly sexually harassed his secretary so frequently and so long that she eventually had to quit her job to get away from him.

 Wow! And follow it up with the comment made which led me to this:

Credentials vs. Note Taking

Category: Science & Society
Posted on: September 30, 2006 9:49 AM, by Alex Palazzo

A lesson of what not-to-do from Joseph Schlessinger (the "signaling guy" and head of Pharmacology at Yale) at the Yeda vs. ImClone Patent trial. Yeda provided detailed records of their development of Erbitux, ImClone provided no records, only Joseph Schlessinger's account of a twenty year old conversation. The court stated:
We find Schlessinger's account of this conversation not credible for several reasons.

~snip~

By contrast, she [Judge Buchwald] repeatedly assailed the testimony of Schlessinger, who testified that he'd been nominated for a Nobel Prize and is now the chair of pharmacology at Yale University's School Of Medicine. "Schlessinger's explanation... can most generously be described as strained," Judge Buchwald wrote in her opinion.

Elsewhere, she commented that "This exchange represents one of many instances in which Schlessinger exhibited great reluctance to acknowledge a fact that he perceived to be injurious to the defendants' case." In various places, her opinion dismissed his testimony as "not credible," "contorted," "incredible" and "wholly unsubstantiated by any contemporaneous records."

He sounds like a real wiener. Possible motive ? He'd been warned after the prior harrassment allegations and Le was going to 'out' him ?

MOO

Hmmm...unless she works there...would she have special privileges allowing her access to the labs?

Just an observation, and about a million questions before I sleep.
(You my friends can noodle them all night long. And thank you fellow ws-ers for a very interesting, however tragic day of sleuthing here at ws.)

Observation:
Cleraly, LE knew they had the body yesterday. There were leaks they found the body, and retractions. Clearly they knew. Even Yale knew they had the body yesterday. The recovery team moved in the building yesterday. They notified Annie's parents who came into New Haven this AM. Yale held a vigil for Annie today. FBI backed off, New Haven police have taken over.

A Million Questions:
Do you think they have a confession? Do you think they have the perp? Or, do you think the dogs were right on yesterday, and they are still looking for the perpetrator? Surely they have talked to close friends of Annie's and they know about any stalkers/suitors. Surely they have a limited number of suspects. Surely they tracked any persons of interest via the building videotapes.

Why do you think the showing/searching at the Hartford waste facility? Is it because of information obtained from the confession? What could they have needed to find there?

To WS-ers on the Annie threads.
I'm so very sorry that this happened. It has been an honor to learn about Annie's story with you and to be a part of this cyber-vigil hoping for a miracle for Annie and your family. The level of conversation on this Annie thread has been so incredibly respectful and hi-minded - a lovely testament to a lovely human being. I hope it will continue this way. I thank you all. I learned from you all. I'll be back to visit but I have to get to work tomorrow...

To Annie Marie:
I am so sorry your beautiful, meaningful, productive and happy life was cut short. But I will celebrate it becuase you lived it so energetically and so fully, and accomplished more in your short life than most do in their entire lives. I am so sorry you will never know the joy of having a husband and a family, never know the joy of watching your own child become a beautiful, accomplished young adult - like your mother had with you. But I hope that you will know how much your life and your tragic death will inspire other young people who share your aspirations to acheive great things in academics, science, reseerch, and/or medicine. And I hope, somehow, your mom and your fiance will find comfort from your colleagues and fellow students at Yale, and realize you will live in their hearts forever. I want you to know that if they ever auction off your earrings, I will be the highest bidder. RIP with the angels.

Goodnight all.

After what I have heard from Hopefulinca and from her former teacher in CA earlier on the video about her being a very outspoken person who didn't take carp from anyone...could be. It certainly has to be looked into as a possibility.

Going back to the "Scouting list" about the Freshman women...could he have been the author? Yale officials claimed they could not track down where the email originated which most students found bogus due to the fantastic IT department at Yale. They shuffled the email incident under the rug quickly from what I have read so far.

Could it be that Annie figured it out or saw something which tipped her off and she was going to blow the whistle on him? Sounds like she is the type of woman who would not stand for such a thing from a Professor or anyone else if she knew it to be true.

Emma~ I think you are right. They did know about the body (which means that JerseyGirl was right on the money the whole time, too!).

I feel the reason they were looking at the dump is to find the murder weapon or additional clues to the perp: Other clothing. Towels used for clean up. Latex gloves.

Guess what ??
It looks like she works or at least worked there!!

According to this, his wife is an assistant professor in the same department.

I doubt she had anything to do with it but it would certainly add a second motive for the good doc.

I just confirmed, she's a member of his lab and in another article from 2006 they are referred to as a couple and the doc said he spent 99.8 percent of his time with her.

HopefulinCA,

I'm so sorry for your profound loss. I can't imagine what it would be like to watch Annie's threads fly by here over the last few days as her friend. How devastating it must have been for you. If we helped you at all by providing any sort of cyber-companionship and solidarity regarding the frustrations of Annie's case, well, it was by accident, and it's really generous and brave of you to sign up for WS, log in and tell us so.

In return, I just thought I'd share with you that my daughter (a high school senior) has been following the story about Annie, and has become quite enamored with her, as she is interested in similar academic endeavors. She's reading all about Yale's Medical School, Research Departments, learning how graduate school and reasearch labs work, and she's even been moved to call up a friend of mine and visit her a stem-cell lab next month. I know my daughter is not the only young person Annie's story will touch. There will be thousands who will read about her and find inspiration and energy in her spirit. What a wonderful role model Annie is -and will always be for anyone who reads her story. I hope someone writes a book about her someday.

Take care, Hopeful. I hope you will be able to attend Annie's services, and if you do, please give her family & fiance WS's condolences.

Hopefulinca... I am so sorry for your loss. Annie sounds like she was a wonderful person, someone who only brought good into this world. It is a shame that she was taken so soon. I am so sad for her family and friends. Your insight is so helpful and appreciative. Welcome to WebSleuths!

My money is on Schlessinger at this point.

More stuff to leave in the thread under "culture & finance" @ Yale Medical.

Very Interesting Bio-Article on Yossi Schlessinger. Leaving it here because if you are going to consider the man, then, I know you'll want to consider the entire man. (we worked quite a bit on Dr. Schlessinger yesterday... see threads mid-day Sunday.)

Was his spin-off company "Kolltan" mentioned? Supposedly new cancer drug founded by him and being funded millions, just this year.

I'm so sorry about all of this...I hope you can find peace in your happy memories with Annie. Though none of us here knew her personally, she was clearly an exceptional, intelligent, and well loved woman.

I find it pathetic that about 24 hours earlier the FBI agent catagorically denied that a body had been found in the building and about 24 hours later, we get an announcment that a body had been found in the building.

Either the initial reports were a remarkable coincidence or the FBI lady is a liar.

If the latter is true, how do people like this get promoted to positions of authority?

She only did what she was told to do by someone higher position than her self.

Highly unlikely, but perhaps she found out that a fellow student had been falsifying data for his/her research. The student was afraid that Annie would tell someone and in a panic, killed her.
