EAST HARTFORD — A probate judge has removed Candace Bednarz as administrator of her mother's estate.

Bednarz's brother Brett is charged with killing their mother, Beverly Therrien, 74. Therrien was bludgeoned to death on Thanksgiving 2010 along with two friends, Pamela Johns, 60, and Michael Ramsey, 53, at her home at 105 Naomi Drive.

Brett Bednarz has been charged with three counts of murder, capital felony and other charges. Candace Bednarz was appointed administrator of Therrien's estate five months after the murders. She was arrested April 19 on charges of hindering prosecution and tampering with evidence after police said she had in her possession the cellphones of two of the victims.

In the warrant for her arrest, police also described a series of financial transactions that raised questions about her handling of Therrien's estate, prompting East Hartford Probate Judge Alan Driscoll to move to remove Candace Bednarz as fiduciary. Driscoll subsequently withdrew from the case and Manchester Probate Judge Michael Darby is now handling the matter.

Warrant: Bednarz Lashed Out About His Mother Before Her Death

EAST HARTFORD — — A day after his 92-year-old father died of a heart attack, and 10 weeks before his mother and two others were brutally slain in East Hartford, Brett Bednarz lashed out at a bank manager would refused to provide information about one of his father's back accounts, according to a search warrant affidavit made available this week.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday for the trial of Candace Bednarz, a Manchester woman accused of tampering with evidence and hindering prosecution in connection with a Thanksgiving 2010 triple murder in East Hartford.

Bednarz, 56, had the cell phones of two people murdered at her mother's home at 154 Naomi Drive, East Hartford, in the trunk of a car she was driving. The car, police said, was sometimes used by her brother, Brett Bednarz, who faces three counts of murder, capital felony, first-degree burglary, home invasion and violation of a protective order in connection with the triple murder...

The phones were found about six weeks after the murders when police obtained a search warrant for Candace Bednarz's daughter's white Nissan Altima. Police said witnesses told them they'd seen a small white car near the crime scene at the time of the murders and that Brett Bednarz regularly used the car.

According to the note jurors sent out, their vote was eight in favor of conviction and four against. By Thursday evening the vote was 10-2 to convict.

Judge Joan K. Alexander told the lawyers to return to court July 1 for a pretrial conference. Bednarz will be given another plea offer. If he turns it down the case will go back on the trial list.

Bednarz remains in custody with bail set at $3 million.

This a familiar tale; I've heard before though they were different individuals. Thankfully the issue was settled grudgingly and their lives went on but at enormous emotional cost. Until today I've thought of those individuals as some of the most worthless children. This has shown me just how serious the matter can be.

There will hopefully be some justice eventually.

Therrien's nephew, Gary Howe of Manchester, N.H., testified that Bednarz told him that Therrien "needed to be dead" after a court hearing during the fall of 2010 on a case in which Bednarz was accused of assaulting his mother.

Howe also testified that Therrien had made an appointment for Dec. 1, 2010 to visit a lawyer to change the beneficiary of her will. "She was unhappy with Brett," Howe said. "She was going to leave the money elsewhere."

Carlos Tirado, Bednarz's probation officer, testified that Bednarz became angry when the two talked about Bednarz's mother. "He hated her and he blamed her for the death of his father," Tirado told the jury. His father Andrew Bednarz died in September 2010.

Since Brett Bednarz's triple-murder trial began Monday, jurors have heard witnesses repeatedly speak about Bednarz's sister, Candace Bednarz, and the deteriorating relationship the siblings had with their mother, Beverly Therrien, one of the three people found dead Thanksgiving morning 2010 in East Hartford.

On Thursday, jurors heard from Candace Bednarz herself, who was called as a prosecution witness.
