In January 1986 — 8 months before Kathleen was killed — Karun was charged with raping a woman at knifepoint in the woods behind what is now Norwalk Community College. He was arrested on charges of 1st degree sexual assault ^ kidnapping. However, the kidnapping charge was nolled & the sexual assault was reduced when the victim did not testify. As a result, Karun served only a few months in prison.
Between 1986 and 1988, Karun was implicated in at least two other rapes, an abduction & an attempted kidnapping, according to an arrest warrant. During one of these incidents in Derby, Karun told a rape victim — a stranger — that “he would either have to marry her or kill her if she became pregnant,” the warrant said. Karun was eventually sentenced to 10 years in prison for his two-year crime spree, & was later entered into the sex offender’s registry for life.
6/14/19 Update: Appeared in Bangor courtroom, awaiting extradition to CT. He waived the extradition to CT. Judge Maureen Dennis upheld the $5 million bond at his arraignment Monday afternoon. Karun would need to put up 7 percent of the bond — $350,000 — in order to be released. Dennis further ruled that in the event he posted bond, Karun would also need to forfeit his passport and be fitted with a GPS tracker. He would also need to do so at a courthouse. The case is set to be transferred to Stamford Superior Court. Karun’s next hearing is July 10.
7/10/19 Update: During the Wednesday hearing, Judge Richard F. Comerford Jr. kept Karun’s bail at $5 million & continued the case to Aug. 12. 8/12/19: Pleaded not guilty. Defense attorney Todd Bussert waived a probable cause hearing. Next pretrial hearing on 10/4. 10/4/19: Pretrial hearing was rescheduled for 12/13.
12/13/19 Update: Hearing was continued to Jan. 23, because Karun was not available to be in court in Stamford on Friday. The continuance was requested by State's Attorney Richard Colangelo & granted by Stamford Superior Court Judge Gary White. Karun is in federal custody in his home state of Maine where he is accused of illegally storing an arsenal of firearms. He is expected to be transported back to Connecticut in time for the pre-trial hearing in the murder case in January.
