Her date also noted that they kept drinking and that he stayed the night and slept next to her in the bed, and woke up to her unresponsive/deceased in the bed.

I can't think of anyone I know who would stay over if someone was vomiting and also sleep next to them in bed, on a first date??? Extremely odd.
maybe he was pressed.

Unless maybe he was too drunk to drive? Then why not sleep on the sofa at least?
One of the reports said he had given her $40 to get her nails done? Just makes you wonder.

"When the family inspected Smith-Fields home after learning of her death, Crosland alleges they found a used condom, a sedative pill, the bloodstained sheet, an overturned plate of food, and bottles of alcohol. 'You'd definitely want to get the sheet, condom, you'd want to take pictures of the overturned plate," said Crosland. 'After we forced them to collect it on December 29, I called the state forensic lab and the woman who answered said the police department has not made a submission."' - from Lauren Smith-Fields: Accidental overdose death to be investigated as a crime, police say - CNN

This is so suspicious, beyond just the gross incompetence shown here by police. The date said he carried a sleeping Lauren to bed and they slept clothed. If the condom is his, his entire story is shattered because he either raped her or she was awake when they went to bed. What is Bridgeport PD hiding? How well-connected is Matthew LaFountain in Bridgeport?

Something is very off here. Why would her parents press LE if her brother was supplying her with drugs? That would make him somewhat guilty.

I believe there might be a lot of information that we don't know about regarding this case. The LE stance and the way they handled the case in the early stages is just downright stupid and lazy.

There is a criminal investigation going on so there's something there.

People have sex other places than bed and at other times than night.

What I'm reading here is that she met this guy on bumble, he came over, they had sex, he gave her $40, her brother brought her something (presumably she got dressed to meet him), she went into the bathroom for an extended period of time, she lost consciousness, was put in bed where she died.

I'm not going to state the implications but I think they're fairly obvious.

If he had sex with her or raped her then why not take the condom? He couldn’t have known the police wouldn’t take it or investigate.

I suppose it could be possible the brother is not revealing all details. IF he did bring her drugs, the parents might be disappointed or furious.

It could also be that the date stayed over hoping their intoxication may lead to some action, or he may have been too intoxicated to leave. In my younger years, I probably would not have considered much. However, being in his age group, I would not stay with someone I barely knew, especially if they were getting that intoxicated.

This really seems like it could go a number of ways, but if the investigation was truly so lax, that seems to have been a huge mistake.

My opinions.

I would like to see toxicology analysis of her hair to determine if she consumed narcotics within the last few months. I am betting that she will test positive for narcotic pain killer use. My guess is that her brother brought her a “Vicodin” or the like and it was a fake pill made with fentanyl and the other drugs.

Sounds like they are looking for the source of the fentanyl. The DEA is now involved.

“The man who placed the call was also at the scene when police arrived. His name was redacted in the report, though NBC News has identified him as a 37-year-old white man (many outlets, including NPR, are not releasing his name because he is not facing any charges).”

“The report said he had been doing chest compressions with the guidance of the emergency operator on the phone, and described him as frantic, "trembling and visibly shaken." He told police that he had met Smith-Fields on the dating app Bumble three days earlier, and had met her for the first time the previous night.”

Yeah I'm seeing this case all over social media and while it's possible he accidentally supplied her with fentanyl by bringing over painkillers etc, I don't believe he had any nefarious intent.

Also, I'm older than Lauren but a single millennial, and I had a similar experience with puking on a date and my date continuing the evening. It happens...if the dude is into you enough, they're willing to overlook a lot.

What are the implications? Why not tell police about the sex and why would an employed woman with a family well off enough to pay for a private autopsy with no documented history of drug use have sex for $40? The going rate is much higher than that, for one, but I can think of 100 other reasons why I feel like you wouldn't make the same "fairly obvious" implications if this was a white woman who turned up dead after a Bumble date.

Were my recounting of the facts of this case in error? If so, I apologize. I also am sorry to say I cannot locate any mainstream media reporting on a private autopsy having been conducted. Could you specifically site your source on that?

There is no shortage of people of all races and sexual identities who die after nights of partying. In this case the decedent was not dumped like trash as often happens in cases we see here so it should be fairly simple for the authorities to accurately reconstruct the circumstances.

Just curious—I’ve read she was a college student, but nothing about a job. Where did she work?

You're stating facts, but it's interesting what ones you choose to list and what ones you choose to ignore.

"They have also reportedly paid out of pocket for an independent autopsy, and have set up an online fundraising page in the hopes of hiring a private investigator to conduct their own parallel investigation."

I see they have raised more than their goal to fund the private investigator. I will be interested to see who they choose to hire and what evidence he uncovers.

I can't find employment for her, I ran a search and nothing came up. She seems to have traveled a lot, and had to have funded that somehow. I am fairly sure it will come up her brother gave her the drugs for a number of reasons. The late visit at midnight, the vomiting after she met him (vomiting, besides from too much alcohol can also occur with very recent opioid ingestion) all point towards the brother MOO.

Her date works at a place which does business with the military, so it is fairly likely he underwent random drug tests, making him way less likely to have given her anything. In addition, if this was a mutual benefit type of encounter, he may be fairly used to this behavior, hence the vomiting not bothering him too much. Also, the condom may have been from a previous encounter, and really not his at all. Time will tell. Again MOO.

Just because you do business with the military doesn't mean you are drug tested. My company does work for them and such a thing was never mentioned.

Interesting that $1340 cash was found in her apartment, according to the article below. I haven’t read anywhere that other drugs were found, other than a white pill. I hope LE kept that as evidence and that it will be analyzed.
