Det. Chris Gates contacted Ontario Provincial Police who did a rendering of what Dana might look like now. There are two images, one smiling, one a resting face. Her mother Biljana likes the smiling photo better.Ontario Provincial Police

Hamilton cold case: 21-year-old photo was not Dana Zelic, police say
''Hamilton police have received new information that eliminates what was once believed to be a credible sighting in the 21-year-old investigation into the disappearance of Dana Zelic.

It was believed that Dana may have stayed in Hamilton, at least initially, after leaving her mom’s east Hamilton apartment sometime early on Aug. 30, 1999. This was based, in part, on a photo published in The Spectator two weeks after she disappeared, showing two women marching arm in arm at the annual Take Back the Night rally.

For the past two decades, Dana’s mom, Biljana, and police thought one of the women was Dana.

But after a story on the missing person case ran in The Spectator last month, Det. Chris Gates was contacted by two women who claimed it was them in the photo. Gates, who took over the case in June, said he confirmed their identities and shared the news with the family.

The news doesn’t change what is known about the night Dana disappeared from her mom’s east Hamilton apartment, nor does it change the course of the investigation. It is a cold case and Gates needs someone to come forward to give police a place to start.

But the news does mean even less is known about where she went and what may have happened to her in the days after she disappeared.

Biljana said she was surprised when she was told the photo wasn’t Dana, as she had been sure it was her daughter after spotting it in the paper all those years ago. Part of why she was sure was because of the clothing — the woman appeared to be wearing the same shirt Dana had on the night she disappeared. But the woman’s face is also turned and partially blocked by her hand.''

''Dana was on medication for depression and had been hospitalized in the past. She was enrolled in a tourism program at a vocational school. She had travelled a lot, including spending time in Switzerland and travelling around Ontario and in New York.''

Hamilton cold case: What happened to Dana Zelic?
dana_zelic_cold_case.jpg

''Sometime during the early morning hours of Aug. 30, 1999, Dana Zelic left her mom’s east Hamilton apartment and disappeared.''

“If she is alive ... give me a call ... your mom and brother miss you terribly,” she says. She needs her daughter to know how much she loves her.''

In June, Det. Chris Gates took over the case. He wants to bring it back to the public’s attention, with the hope that someone, somewhere knows something.

“At this point, since so much time has gone by, I’m willing to talk to anyone who has any information whatsoever,” Gates says.''

''After high school Dana travelled, including spending several months in Switzerland where Biljana had a cousin. She also travelled around the province and had friends everywhere from Ottawa to across the border in New York.''

''In the early days after the disappearance, Biljana would get phone calls, but the person on the other end would hang up quickly. And once there was a message left on her answering machine by a woman who said something like: “Hi mom, I’m OK.”

A friend thought it was Dana, but Biljana wasn’t sure. The voice sounded similar, but not exact.

Around 21, she was diagnosed with depression and was on medication. Before her disappearance she spent a month as an inpatient at St. Joseph’s West 5th hospital.''

The Disappearance Of Dana Zelic – Missing From Hamilton, Ontario Since 1999

11/16/2020

Dana Zelic was born November 12, 1972 in Hamilton, Ontario, where she grew up with one younger brother. She attended Delta Secondary School and was described as an average student who enjoyed drama class. After graduation, she took several years off to travel. For a while, she lived with a boyfriend. When the relationship ended, she moved into her mother’s apartment in Hamilton’s east end. At 26 years old, Dana had enrolled in a tourism course at a vocational school downtown and planned to get a place of her own. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
On the evening of August 30, 1999, Dana was asleep at the apartment. Her mother saw her at 2:30 a.m. Dana was gone by the morning. She left behind her identification, money, clothing, medication & other personal belongings. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Initially, her mother assumed she had stepped out and would return. Dana never came home. Her mother reported her missing soon after. Several weeks later, Dana’s mother saw a photo of her in the Hamilton Spectator, at a Take Back the Night march. The photo was taken on September 17, 1999 – after Dana was reported missing. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
One year later, in August of 2000, Dana called a male friend in Hamilton, who did not know she was missing. Dana said she was living in Mississauga, about 48 km away. No details about this call have been released. It’s unknown where Dana was, or who she was with, when she placed the call. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
The last reported sighting of Dana was in 2002. One of her friends called police to report they had seen her at the Chapters bookstore in Hamilton. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣However, at the time, the only Chapters in the area was located in nearby Ancaster; the Hamilton location on Wentworth closed in January 2000.
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
It’s been 18 years since anyone has reported seeing or hearing from Dana Zelic. She is described as 5’6″, 100 lbs, with brown eyes & dark brown hair. She has a birth mark on the left side of her throat, is known to wear baggy clothing and has connections to the GTA and #Brooklyn, New York. She also uses the names “Frankie,” “Alex,” & “Donna.” ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
If Dana left with nothing, she must have had help. The circumstances of her disappearance are unknown, and her case is being investigated by the HPS Victims of Crime Unit. Any information helps.
