Dateline: "Along Came Jodi"

Donovan says JA expects life in prison, but the guy who has been visiting her in jail (the one who is always on NG and JVM) says that Jodi thinks it will be a mistrial! He said so much on Wednesday I believe.

This bothers me so much every time I hear him say this...UGH...the audacity of Jodi to think this... She is so cocky..

I just wish someone would set her mind straight, and let her know what we all really think of her and that we arent believing her bs!

I watched this Dateline and it held my attention since I haven't followed the case too closely and wanted to learn more.

This is just a picky little point that has occurred to me, but I'm not wild about the title they gave this Dateline story. Jodi did come along, all right, into Travis' life, but the phrase sounds so benign and almost perky.

"Along Came Jodi" could be a play on the title of the old Coasters' song "Along Came Jones", which a quick google reveals was a bouncy song with pretty violent lyrics actually lol but Jones was the guy who saved the day. Anyway, it's easy to be a critic...not sure what I would have titled the Dateline piece. Something that sounded a little less airy, though, for sure, since what we were seeing was the story of a woman accused of basically butchering another human being.

I had the opposite reaction. "Along Came Jodi" gives me a dark and gloomy feeling. It makes me feel quite sad, actually, just reading the title. Many childhood nurseries were born out darkness so I just get this juxtaposition of something sweet and innocent, like a child, alongside something dark and sinister, like Jodi's soul. It also reminded me of "Along Came a Spider," which is a psychological thriller by James Patterson. So, in a way, I thought the title was perfect. TA was just living his life, and along came a spider, and it was never the same.

Just finished watching it, loved it. It really helped clarify and bring it all together for me. I definitely believe it was 100% premeditated now. She is pure evil.

The show was OK. As stated up thread, we learned that TA went to his bishop. During this show we see how easy it is for JA to put on an act with each scenario she tells...as we did with each of her taped versions as well as on the stand. The jury saw that also as they have seen her face to face and were also shown her taped interviews. I hope the jury gets that. She can perform what she thinks is normal reactions. It is a poorly done act and the jury needs to understand that behind her hands and hair curtain there is no remorse. It is just a performance.

I missed the first hour of Dateline on Friday night, but watched it online last night. I don't remember hearing any testimony thus far about Travis going to his bishop shortly before his death. Did I miss something? If true, it does speak to motive. The only thing they had at that point was sex, and if she knew he was cutting that off too, there would be no reason for him to ever see her again. She was, imo, desperate to keep him in her life for whatever reason, and I believe she'd have done whatever she had to do to keep him entangled.

Also (and forgive me if it's been previously discussed), does anybody know what time Travis's email account was last accessed? Jodi testified that she was under the impression he was taking somebody's babysitter to Cancun but, could it be that she hacked into his email account and found the emails between Travis and Mimi about Cancun?

I saw this too and it paints more and more of picture on how Travis was living in sin and could not "repent".

I was thinking along the line of "Along came a spider."

I don't know. Along Came Jodi had me thinking of "Along came a Spider" and didn't conger up happy or perky feelings for me.

Opps, I just said the same thing, although comparing JA to a spider is derogatory to spiders.

I'm curious what you mean by "could not"? Do you mean he was personally unable or unwilling to repent, or that the church/ bishop would not allow him to repent, or God would not allow him to repent ? There are many ways to interpret "could not" in your post. I'm curious what you mean.

What significance do you place on your thoughts that TA "could not" repent? Do you think Jodi knew about something like that, and exploited Travis' spiritual angst/ struggle?

I wasn't impressed with her friend....not because of her status with Jodi but the way she said things and her facial expressions just really really bothered me. I felt like smacking her lol
And I have to say how funny it was watching the first video of Det. Flores and how she tried to explain away her trip. "There's about 18 hours left here." "Oh did I tell you I got stranded?" "Yes you did." She has had several years of coaching but even then she was overly talking and coming up with excuses.

I saw Datelone on Jodi Arias. She is a real psychopath.

what does religion have to do with premeditated murder?

eta: not to mention I am quite sure he is not the first person in his religion to break a rule.

and it also does not make him a terrible person either.

The narrator explained that within church districts (wards), members were divided into groups for socializing and church activities. The "single adult" group is made up of single adults below age 30, and that Travis would have been expected to stop socializing with the single adults when he turned 30. He would have been expected to move into a different demographic group (though I'm not sure if it would have been single adults over 30, or include married couples). The narrator went on to say that Travis would have been somewhat restricted from socializing with pretty 20-something women in his ward after he turned 30.

If there are any here who are Mormon, or who have more knowledge and insight into those comments, I'd be interested to know if they were accurate? Especially about turning 30 and the socializing groups in the church district.

Lifelong LDS member here. It is true that once you turn 31, you no longer attend a singles ward and instead attend a "family" ward, which is geographically based and includes single people, married people, divorced, and of course any children. This does make it more difficult to meet other single people. Up to age 31, you can meet them in the usual Sunday worship activity.

It's easy to believe that he would turn 30, start thinking ahead, and decide to make some changes in his life.

I have gone over this case in my head every which way ... and after watching the (most recent) Dateline story it just occurred to me.
Let's say when she stabbed him it hit his spinal cord. Like she says in the "INTRUDER STORY" he said, "He couldn't feel his legs".
This makes even more sense as to why he couldn't fight back. If she severed his spinal cord it could have paralyzed him. Also makes sense as to why she had to drag him. OMG. That makes all of this EVEN worse than it already is!
I was also intrigued by what his friend said about her flooding the bathroom with water so she could drag his body back to the shower.

Let's say when she stabbed him it hit his spinal cord.

The only time his spinal column was hit was at the time of the neck slash and he was dead within 30 seconds of that. He would not have been able to talk, let alone move. He would be unconscious just from that wound within a few seconds.

I think he couldn't feel his legs because he was bleeding out and the circulation was slowing. Once his neck was severed, he would not be able to talk as the ME explained. But I do believe he really said that, which is devastatingly sad.

I saw the Dateline episode, CNN's hour-long program, and I've caught snippets of HLN's Nancy Grace mystery episode. Personally, I think the 48 Hours episode is much better than all of these. CBS was lucky enough to get Jodi while she was agreeing to interviews. Also, I think 48 Hours does a better job at storytelling...

It would be great if 48 Hours did (yet another) update and included all of Jodi's interview. It seems as if there are still portions that have not aired.
