Everything in San Francisco was packed and ready to go. The newlyweds had just found a charming Woodley Park apartment where they would start a life together in Washington.

It was the summer of 1998 and Christine Mirzayan, 28, was living in Georgetown until her husband joined her that fall. He called her a few hours before she went to a Saturday dinner with friends. It was the last time they would talk.

That night, Aug. 1, 1998, Mirzayan was walking home when she was dragged into the woods near Canal Road NW. A man heard her scream and called out to her, asking whether she was okay. She did not respond.

Her body was found the next day. Police said she had been sexually assaulted and died from a blow to the head.

Investigators have linked forensic evidence from a 1996 sexual assault to nine similar crimes — including the killing of a 28-year-old intern — believed to be committed against women by the same suspect, a man they have dubbed the Potomac River Rapist.

The link, discovered after DNA from a 1996 case in the 4900 block of MacArthur Blvd. NW in the District was recently retested, was reported at a Thursday news conference held by D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier and investigators and agents from Montgomery County police and the FBI.

The attack on July 20, 1996, was the second of a string that runs from May 1991 to August 1998 to have taken place in the District; the rest happened in Montgomery County. Officials hope this link will help generate new witnesses or other avenues for their investigation as they search for the suspect — if he is still alive.

In the 1996 case, the victim was walking alone on the south sidewalk of MacArthur Boulevard, along a stretch of homes and woods in the Palisades neighborhood, at about 8:30 p.m. She was attacked without warning, dragged into the woods and sexually assaulted, officials said.

Christine Mirzayan was assaulted in the 3600 block of Canal Road NW in Georgetown in August 1998.

The FBI and D.C. police say they have arrested the Potomac River Rapist who killed a D.C. intern and raped nine women over the course of seven years in the 1990s.

The suspect, Giles Daniel Warrick, was arrested Tuesday in South Carolina.

Warrick, now 60, is suspected of killing 29-year-old Christine Mirzayan in August 1998. She was sexually assaulted and murdered as she walked to her home in Georgetown. Her body was found near Whitehurst Freeway.

Warrick also is believed to have raped seven women in Montgomery County, Maryland, and two women in D.C. between 1991 and 1998. DNA linked those cases to the homicide.

. Since the arrest of the suspected “Golden State Killer” in April 2018, about 100 suspects have been identified through the technology, according to CeCe Moore, the chief genealogist at Parabon NanoLabs. Moore, who has appeared as an expert in ABC News “20/20″ episodes and has been quoted in ABCNews.com articles, investigated the Potomac River Rapist case among others.Police did not elaborate on which of Warrick’s relatives had voluntarily submitted their DNA to databases. Police also did not disclose how they obtained Warrick’s DNA to confirm the match.Warrick was arrested Wednesday at his home in Horry County, South Carolina, and has been charged with six counts of first-degree rape in Montgomery County, police said.

Two violent suspects — one accused of being a serial rapist, the other a prison escapee — were found in recent months in Horry County. But, questions remain on why the suspects who spent decades on the run decided to make the area home.

On Wednesday, Horry County police arrested Giles Daniel Warrick, 60, and he was charged with being a fugitive of justice. Washington D.C. police say Warrick is the suspect of a murder and a series of rapes in the Maryland area in the 1990s committed by the “Potomac River Rapist.”

Police say Warrick committed a series of sexual assaults in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area between 1991 and 1998. In many cases, the victims were sexually assaulted inside their homes.

In the last attack, on Aug. 1, 1998, Christine Mirzayan was hit in the head with a rock and killed near her Georgetown, Washington D.C., home and her body was left near a highway. In the following years, police offered a reward for information about the attacks but made no arrests.

Authorities say they used DNA from the crimes and genealogy to locate Warrick.

Horry County police Deputy Chief Kenny Davis said they were involved in the case for about a week after police in Montgomery County and Washington D.C. contacted their office. The U.S. Marshals Regional task force assisted in the arrest.

This has probably been posted before sometime but I will post it again if people want to watch. Here is the Americans Most Wanted segment about the Potomac River Rapist:

"Officials believe Warrick took his own life, and an investigation will soon be underway involving D.C. homicide detectives. Warrick was set to go to trial by the end of this month, and a court hearing was set for this Monday."
