Felt dizzy here as well, but the entire building was shacking, glass moving, felt like I was on the ocean.

That weird ear stopped, need to pop feeling you get when you drive to higher elevations as well.

So much for us newbies at earthquakes.

As I told a friend: I thought my vertigo was back at first. But once it stopped shaking the dizziness calmed...

News here is just not caught up, it is coming in slowly. A retirement community evacuated, stairs buckled, some major damage about 50 miles away not fully reporting yet, but mostly just showing the Governor talking. He spent too much time saying we don't know much yet, nuclear transformers tripped off line (not sure what that means), all Federal Buildings closed, bridges being checked, go ahead out to vote it is safe!

I survived the 8/23/2011 Earthquake LMAO

I used your map ,and put in my addy and it put me at 42 miles from A.

I dont see how people in NY felt it. I also was shocked when they said it was a 5.8 I thought 4. something. We had one here in 2003 (or close) and it was a 3 it just didnt last as long but felt kinda the same.

I'm no expert but I would think since this one wasn't very deep in the earth is the reason why it felt stronger and felt further away. Just a guess.

Noting fell off my walls but the entire house shook, like if ordnance was going off around you. Or several sonic booms lasting a minute.

How an earthquake feels depends on a lot of factors, including the depth of the epicenter but also the frequency of the shaking and the type of soil/bedrock at the site where the quake is experienced.

During the 1993 Northridge quake (about 25 miles from us), we lost one electric candle that fell off the mantle, but a few blocks away entire homes and apartment buildings were destroyed.

The thread downstairs is for members only scorekeeper, this one any one can read it's wide open to all internet traffic.

There are personal identifiers that I will post downstairs as opposed to posting up here (like my real first name, or the first name's of my family, exactly where I am located...etc....KWIM?) that I most certainly will not share up here :) Although I'm not posting down there, that's one reason why we probably have 2 threads going if I had to take a guess.

I live in Upstate Ny,about 2 1/2 hours from NYC. I felt it big time. I was on the phone with my niece and told her I was feeling so dizzy, almost faint when I realized it was a quake. House was shaking, chandeliers swaying. My dog was acting weird all day,I thought it was because my son left for college. Then when it was over every dog in the neighborhood was barking like crazy. Mine climbed on a stair and layed across it (never saw that before).

As for the dizziness,I experinced quakes when I lived in California and never had that dizzy feeling. As a matter of fact,I still feel off kilter now.I have what I guess is vertigo. I just don't feel right. Anyone else feel this way?

A friend of mine lives in Richmond, VA. I called her as soon as I heard the news - about an hour after the EQ. She was still trembling, bless her heart, but assured me she was okay. Her studio (she's an artist) was a mess, though. Several pieces were damaged when they fell from their easels (she said two paintings literally shimmied off a table during the shaking), and she was trying to mop up cans of paint and a can of gesso that were knocked off a table. The important thing is that she is okay.

She was surprised I was able to get through, since she'd been trying to call out and kept getting that rapid 'busy signal'. I told her maybe it's because I was calling from a different area code. She was very happy to hear another human voice.

EQs are scary - I've experienced several of them. They were all different. The first one I experienced hit with a bang, and at first I thought my neighbor had crashed her car into the building, and then the floor started to ripple like a waterbed. Very eerie. The most recent one I experienced was the worst (and the strongest - a 6.8) and it lasted forever - 45 seconds. I thought it was the "big one" that everyone had been predicting for my area. I think it took me over an hour before I stopped shaking & crying.

As humans, we have a certain amount of control over our daily lives and events, but when the ground beneath you starts to rumble, you feel utterly helpless.

Big hugs to everyone who rode the wave today - I hope none of you or your loved ones were injured.

Well I was sitting in my car outside our biggest mall in Roanoke, VA and had just turned off the engine. It is an especially pretty day and as I was getting ready to get out my car, it started shaking. I thought I was imagining it at first. I checked to see if I really had not turned off the engine. Then I thought maybe someone who knew me saw me there and was hiding behind my car and shaking it. (Of course I really did not believe anyone would do that.) Then I thought one of those people with loud radios is playing it really loud and it is shaking the car. (Again did not really believe this). This mall beside the airport so wondered about something going on there.

So, keeping in mind I have been under an extreme amount of stress (husband and mom both ill) I decided I'd go on into the mall and unless someone else in the mall mentioned it, I was not going to say anything. I went through Macy's and as I got into the mall, I overheard a woman and her grandson discussing "feeling the earthquake". I was then feeling shocked but also at the same time feeling better that I had not imagined the car shaking. I texted my daughter who lives outside of DC and she said "yes we felt it and are you okay". She later told me "we are all okay and watching out for aftershocks".

A man who worked at Macy's looked at me and I must've looked awful, told me "you look like you need a hug and he actually did hug me". Thank goodness, as far as I know there have been no injuries from this.

My coworkers and I felt it in Cincinnati. It was faint and only the ones sitting down felt it. We are definately not used to that here.

Strawberry - isn't it interesting how the mind tries to find a logical explanation for the shaking? I've been in 4 noticeable earthquakes, and when the 1st and the 3rd ones hit, I didn't know what was happening initially. During the first few seconds, I thought of any number of reasons why I was feeling & hearing what I was feeling & hearing, until I realized what was really going on.

I have empathy for everyone who felt the Virginia EQ today - especially for those who have never been in one. Even if someone has experienced an EQ before, it can still be frightening.

While I didn't notice anything, many folks in southeastern Michigan were very aware that something strange occurred this afternoon.

East Coast quake is strongest in decades at 5.8 magnitude

Detroit News staff and wire reports

Washington — The most powerful earthquake to strike the East Coast in 67 years shook buildings and rattled nerves from South Carolina to Maine on Tuesday. Frightened office workers spilled into the streets in New York, and parts of the White House, Capitol and Pentagon were evacuated.

There were no immediate reports of deaths, but fire officials in Washington said there were at least some injuries.

The National Cathedral said its central tower and three of its four corner spires were damaged, but the White House said advisers had told President Barack Obama there were no reports of major damage to the nation's infrastructure, including airports and nuclear facilities.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake registered magnitude 5.8 and was centered 40 miles northwest of Richmond, Va.

Michigan has couple shakes

Residents and workers in downtown Detroit felt a low-level rumble just before 2 p.m. today. General Motors Co. spokeswoman Ryndee Carney says she noticed the quake while sitting at her computer on the 29th floor of a tower in GM's headquarters in downtown Detroit...

Sure not every day my sister reports in to me about an earthquake LOL. She lives in a 16 story building and it was swaying. Being so close to DC she thought they were under attack.

A friend of mine lives in Richmond, VA....

Yes, sorrell, that is our experience here in California: after an earthquake, we can't call locally but our phones almost immediately start ringing with long-distance calls from relatives who have seen news reports.

In fact, we are advised to have "emergency contacts" in other states who can be used as conduits for info in case the local lines are clogged. In my family we all know to call my sister in Indiana.

Is anyone watching the earthquake coverage on Nancy Grace? You'd think it was 911 all over again. I'm blown away....does she realize no one was even hurt? She's talking about looters, and airports being closed down, imposing curfews - she's looking very serious.... A callers says it was bizarre...not traumatizing ....she went on to someone else..

Uh oh, I think she's fixin' to make them put Wolf Blitzer up....she keeps showing the same pile of bricks, from different angles over and over again. No one else is even covering it.

This is nuts. Just goes to show how she absolutely blows stories out of proportion.

Well, stay safe East Coast - hopefully the danger of aftershocks has passed. Glad everyone made it through ok.
