I assume she was seriously depressed. But you have to either force yourself to ask for help or leave your children with a safe person and give yourself a few days alone and come back refreshed and ready to try again. I don't understand any sympathy because it was so hard to cope, if you choose murder.

Seems like a pretty normal, close family. Even with the extended family. It looks like this boy was loved very much. I can understand the family's shock. She had to be going through something pretty severe. Regarding her mental health, I mean. Can people really just snap out of nowhere? This is scary.

That is very scary, i often ask myself that same question.

Maybe they just though he fell in, and they were helping him, and his mother, rescue the boy. I doubt that this good samaritan thought that his mother was responsible.

This good person must be a mess right now, to know they were the last kind soul to see and help Alejandro. And that about an hour later this child was murdered, allegedly in the same manner.

will probably suffer survivor's guilt
it would destroy me

I never did get that Amber Alert on my cellphone - apparently a lot of other Floridians did not, either.

Something did not add up when the mother claimed two black men kidnapped Alejandro:

Patricia Ripley, 45, had claimed she was driving with her son Alejandro around 9 p.m. ET Thursday when two black men in another vehicle forced her to stop, Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said in a news conference Saturday morning.

Ripley told police that one of the men got out and demanded drugs, according to officials. After Ripley said she didn't have any drugs, the man, who had a knife, stole her phone and kidnapped Alejandro, who was autistic and non-verbal.

Put her in general population in jail. Problem solved.

Except she’s on suicide watch already. If they let her out on bail, I expect her to commit suicide. She has to be profoundly disturbed, or has had a clear mental break from reality, to have done this. Lots of parents are overwhelmed but this is a notch above that, especially since it took 2 attempts to drown him.

A normal Mother doesn't kill her child. So, don't think like a "normal" person.

Susan Smith drowned her kids, and had no problem with doing interviews for tv. Casey Anthony killed her daughter, and continued partying every night.

I don't think that she feels any guilt. Probably remorse for being caught.

Some people on social media are criticizing the person who rescued Alejandro the first time and returned him to his mother. I imagine that someone who would rescue a drowning child would have also gotten him away from his mother if they suspected she had harmed him. It’s not their fault and I truly hope they understand they have nothing to feel guilty for.

And to think that Alejandro couldn’t speak up for himself and tell them his mom pushed him in... ugh. I can’t. Stories about disabled people being harmed just hurt my heart.

I wonder how he ended up back in her care. I would think if she tried to kill him the first time, the witnesses would have prevented her from taking him to the car but maybe they tried.
I think both the attempt and the actual murder happen within an hour or two of each other. That's the way I took it from the articles I've read. Several of them are linked earlier in this thread already so I won't re-link them

I don't ALWAYS agree, but in this case I do. She had a husband and an adult son to reach out to for hep/relief if needed. She wasn't a single mom failed by the system who had no resources. I'm not sure if their culture could come into play, but from everything I have seen both she and the father were very involved and loving. We have to realize, however, that looks can be deceiving and she may not have had as much support as it seems - that is not an excuse, but could be a motive. I hope that we learn more and gain some insight into her mind and what she was going through/thinking to push her to this fatal extreme.

Yeah. The "demanded drugs" statement is what really pushed me to "Oh, no." land. That's not a normal thing that happens. And if it does, they don't take your child when you tell them you have no drugs to give them. They GTFO. Most criminals, even those out for drugs even if the price is blood, do not want to hurt a kid - especially when hurting the child doesn't get them what they are after.

Sadly, murders of autistic children were horribly common even before the corona virus came along. I can only image quarantine is leading to even higher rates. The fictional men-of-color who always seem to crop up in these stories told me all I needed to know.

This is so sickening and awful. RIP Alejandro, you deserved so much better. I can't imagine what was going through his head BOTH times his own mother pushed him into the water. I hope his father and brother will come to see her for what she really is.

At least it seems like the popular response to these stories is not sympathy to the murderers anymore, but condemnation. There always used to be voices defending perpetrators in situations like this, but I don't see that so much anymore.

I tend not to get emotional with these cases but hearing what she did that night has moved me to tears. Alejandro must have been so scared and confused. To be saved once and then she did it again. I feel so sorry for his initial rescuers. They had no way of knowing what had happened and this is never going to leave them.

How would anyone's "culture" would ever come into play in a case of a murdered child? Violence against children, let alone murder is not part of any civilized culture, no matter what people say. Discipline and emotional distance are common in several cultures, but as far as I know, not in the hispanic culture. Hispanics are generally very family oriented.
The couple's other child was much older than Alejandro, probably 10 years older. They do seem like a pretty normal family, the older kid went to a private school, Alejandro was getting help and what seems like pretty adequate educational services. We do see a lot of autistic kids getting victimized, but they're usually neglected and abused immensely until they finally end up being murdered by their parents, this really doesn't seem like it's the same scenario but who knows.

Mother of Florida autistic boy found dead charged with murder

Patricia Ripley, the mother of Alejandro Ripley, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and attempted premeditated murder, early Saturday morning.

She is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade without bond.

“For everyone that has sent their condolences, I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Alejandro’s older brother said in a Instagram post. “I’ll respond to all of you when I’m able to. All I’m going to say is everyone who knows my family, brother, mother, father, you know. Thank you all and God Bless.”
Mother charged with murder following death of 9-year-old boy with autism in SW Miami-Dade

I didn't get the attempted homicide charge and the homicide charge both until I saw the news that she tossed the kid in the canal once and someone fished him out, then she went to another water location then pushed him in again. It was horrific enough to hear she tossed him in once, you'd think she'd regret it, try to get him out, but no, she did it again. We are in shock here. I can't fathom what people are doing to children these days. How can you harm a baby? Your own baby? One man where I am said 'Can you imagine how terrified that little boy must have been? Here's his mother, and she's hurting him.'
