I came across this missing person report by chance and its details or lack thereof made me extremely curious. After review what very little information there is on the case I started digging a little more and discovered that Alvin Terry Duggan was perhaps the last person to see Virginia Johnson who went missing in October 1984, see the appeals transcript below. She lived with him at that time and her death was originally blamed on Bobby Joe Long who was later acquitted of the crime. It appears the police dept. did not investigate Mr. Duggan fully, if they had they may have uncovered that his wife Alexis Godwin Duggan went missing 15 years earlier, which would be a massive red flag. Unfortunately at this time Mr. Duggan is now deceased and the answers are likely gone with him. Is it possible that Mr. Duggan killed multiple people?

Very interesting!

I did some digging and it looks like Alvin Terry Duggan might have been adopted (unfortunately there isn't anything to indicate who he was adopted by/their relation to him). In 1948, when he would've been around 3 years old, a notice appeared in the Tampa Tribune that a "final decree" had been issued "in adoption of Alvin T. Duggan."

I saw that too and would have to see if the adoption records are still available, sometimes they are destroyed but they may have some on microfilm. In Florida you cannot get a birth certificate unless you are family or if 100 years has passed since the birth, that would give us the birth parents name but we would need a family member to help. What I was able to find is that Alvin Terry Duggan born circa 1948 his parents, I assume adoptive, were Pauline C. Duggan (born June 8, 1914 Winterville, GA died Oct 5, 1998 Tampa, FL) and Jack Benjamin Duggan (born Dec 8, 1912 Tift GA died Sept 30, 1978 Tampa FL). He had one sibling Paula Kay Duggan born in 1965 that was married to to Paul Cardinal then divorced and then married Michael Lee Timmons, from what I can tell she still lives in Clearwater, FL.

It appears Alvin was married numerous times as there are several divorce and marriage records filed against Alvin Terry Duggan a rather unique name:

Alvin divorce Priscilla A Duggan Feb 1968

Alvin divorces Shirley J C Duggan July 1969

Alvin marries Alexis G. Yerby nee. Godwin on Jan 2, 1970 in Hillsborough County, FL

Alvin married Dolores Charlene Alexander June 9 1972 in Orange County Florida. Divorced April 25, 1974

Alvin divorces Deborah Ann Arciero Duggan March 5, 1976

Alexis was married to Richard Lee Yerby but divorce him in Aug 1969 in Pinellas County, FL. I was also able to locate where Alexis's parents adopted the 10 month old child in 1972. She has since relocated and changed her name and out of respect for her I will not publish her information.

Does anyone think the Virginia Johnson connection is worth pointing out to the investigator? Could there be more women that he brutalized? Now that he is dead will it solve anything or just open old wounds?

I think you should go ahead. What harm does it do when you're trying to help solve a 50+ year case?

Djeez, this man seems to treat marriages like buying a bread at a bakery. That's concerning in itself. Are you sure he is the same guy?

I'm ambivalent about your question. You said Bobby Joe Long was acquitted from the murder of Virginia Johnson. Do you know why? That means her murderer is never found. If she has still family members left, I think they still want to know who is responsible for her murder and get justice, even when the murderer turns up to be dead.

I think you should pass it on to Tampa. They would be happy to get this, as there is most likely no one digging like you are. You may solve a cold case for them.

Did Curious send the info to Hillsborough county Sheriff Office? That was a good find and even if they can't use it now, it may be something they will use later on. If you send it, it will go into the file for her.

I reached out but haven’t heard back yet. I am still digging and want to have more facts before I present anything. At this point it’s speculation. I’ll keep the board posted once I have more info but at this point I almost feel like we know he killed Alexis but don’t know how to find her and if we can connect him to Virginia then that should help us get people from the past to open up about things he may have told them. If you have not read the appeal I suggest you do, it sounds like the MO of the Bobby Joe Long was different than that of Virginia Johnson’s murderer…

I'm not sure this is the right place to discuss this further, because this thread is about Alexis (my believe is she is killed by ATD, and he got rid of her body at his working place and her remains will never be recovered) and Terry is dead.....But.........

I've read the whole 110 pages of the Appeal for Bobby Joe Long Case 74,017 FL Supreme Court:
https://fsulawrc.com/fall/flsupct/74017/74017ini.pdf

I'm now more or less convinced Virginia Lee Johnson was not killed by Bobby Joe Long, because the circumstances in her case stands out from the other's to much. Not even sure if Long killed all the women presented in the case, even if he said he did. I think he killed at least a few, and he was a horrible person. The red fibers seem to be a major "thing" in the conviction, tying this cases together (at least those of the other murdered woman and the rape of Mss. McVey....)

This is a find a grave for Virginia.
Virginia Lee Johnson (1966-1984) - Find A Grave...

Like in so many cases there are "specialists" who are a "bit to eager" to solve it.....

Bobby Joe Long | Murderpedia, the encyclopedia of murderers

During 1997, the FBI lab came under the scrutiny of the Department of Justice, which issued a blistering 500-page report about testimony from the crime lab technicians. Those cases that had been worked by renowned fiber expert, Special Agent Michael Malone, became eligible for appeal. Long's was one of them, since fiber evidence had been instrumental in his conviction. In fact, a 1992 assault conviction based on Malone's neglect to do the proper testing of the fiber evidence was overturned in 2003, and other cases were re-examined. Malone's once sterling reputation came under fire and he was allowed to retire in 1999.

I have the feeling "Terry" has more on his sleeve.....
