UPDATED 2.15.10 7pm
The search for a missing Tallahassee woman has yielded some critical new clues, but there is still no sign of Danielle Brown herself.
The sheriff says he doubts they'll find Brown alive, but he's determined to find her and give her family some answers ... despite a trail of clues that covers lonely roads in two states.
A piece of Danielle Brown's drivers license turned up along the side of this two lane country road, Old Beachton Road just over the Georgia state line.
A firefighter found her cell phone in a ditch here too.
So Monday, volunteers, many from the Brown's church in Crawfordville, were combing the roadside again, with umbrellas in hand.
"I hope to find something that would help bring them closer to bringing this to a conclusion. I know that I would want that and I'm sure that Tommy and the family, all the family does," said Daniel Cooksey, the pastor at Ivan Assembly of God Church in Crawfordville, where Brown's father attends services.
The sheriff shared the news about the drivers license and cell phone at a briefing Monday morning.
He also revealed that person of interest Elijah James, stopped at covenience store in Bradfordville the morning after Brown disappeared, showing up in her car, alone, at 5:30am to buy a case of beer.
Investigators would not confirm which convenience store it was or if there was surveillance tape of James, but only the Circle K is open at the time of morning on Saturday.
The sighting further pinpoints the time of Brown's disappearance, between 11:30pm Friday and 5:30am Saturday, but it also means the search is widening. And James isn't talking.
"Mr. James is not giving us any indication that he is willing to help us and he's asked for an attorney," Leon County Sheriff Larry Campbell said.
We caught up with deputies and volunteers on horseback near Loveridge Plantation.
It's off Old Centerville Road, a muddy red clay road flanked by oaks and pines and not much else.
If James was familiar with backroads and backwoods like this, there's no telling where Brown might be.
"The longer it takes that there's no contact with anybody, the more bleak it appears," Campbell said.
We must point out that at this point James is charged with stealing Brown's car and setting it on fire, but has not been charged in her disappearance.
The sheriff says it is possible to proceed with murder charges without finding a body, but clearly he hopes that is not necessary.
The sheriff said Brown's cell phone did reveal some clues, but they would not disclose them. He also said there has been no activity on any of Brown's credit cards or other accounts since her disappearance.
Volunteers searching along Old Beachton Road this afternoon said they did find a few things which deputies bagged as evidence, but they weren't sure if they were linked to this case or not.
