The DeLand Police Department said on Thursday that the human remains were of a female. The identity or race cannot yet be determined. The cause of death cannot be determined also.

They say that the female was partially clothed and appeared to have been in the area for some time due to the stage of the body's decomposition.

FDLE investigating whether DeLand remains those of missing Mount Dora teen

State agents are investigating whether the remains found near a dirt road in DeLand last month are those of a 16-year-old girl who went missing in Mount Dora days earlier.

“We are conducting an investigation,” said Angela Starke, a spokeswoman with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. “We are looking into whether there is a connection.”

All I can do is think about the poor parents and what the last moments of that child's life must have been like. I hope we hear more information.

This is heartbreaking. The initial news reports were so vague--almost misleading. I am stunned it is the missing 16 year old from New Smyrna Beach, FL.
