Carole Baskin discussed JDL's Mental Condition
"THE TIME LEADING UP TO DON’S DISAPPEARANCE
"In the few years preceding his disappearance Don’s behavior was gradually showing signs of mental deterioration... [One time] he called me crying because he did not know where he was."
She gives examples of accumulating old vehicles on their property and hoarding w dumpster dive finds.
"Someone mentioned Alzheimer’s to me and I got Don to agree to set up an appointment with a specialist, Dr. Gold..."
She said, Don was diagnosed as BiPolar [was that done in one visit?] and dr. prescribed MRI.
"His behavior became increasingly strange. He started refusing to use the bathroom and defecating outside. He brought in a homeless man to stay in our house..."

Carole Baskin discussed JDL & $
"DON’S “WEALTH”

"Everyone repeats the lie that Don was a millionaire when I met him. He had a business cutting the axles off of trailers pulled by tractors and selling the boxes as storage and the axles back Great Dane. If you search the property records you will find he only owned two real estate properties at the time. He may well have been worth six figures and, coming from a very modest background, would have felt he was rich. No one, including Anne McQueen who had access to his books, has ever provided any bank records or other evidence that he had more than that."
"One day at the bank he overheard a bank officer say he had a $20,000 loan in default he would be glad to sell for $2000. He got the information and, because he could not read beyond a first-grade level, asked me to look into it. In brief, we bought the loan, foreclosed, and sold the property for a substantial profit. That is what got us into the real estate business. We started buying defaulted loans from banks and going to tax deed sales. This was before this became a popular business. There were few people doing it. With me doing the research, negotiations and title clearing on the properties we built this to a portfolio of properties to rent or resell that was worth around $5 million dollars at the time of his disappearance.
"We kept the properties in trusts. During the roughly ten years we were partners before his divorce and our marriage there were properties we bought together and some Don bought on his own or with another woman, Pam. When we married I put all of those I had not worked on into one trust. The ones from our joint efforts were kept in a separate trust. The trust holding the properties I was not involved in was set up with his children as beneficiaries if he passed and called the PRSL Land Trust. I was the beneficiary of the trust holding the properties I was involved in. Anyone can search his name in the public records from 1950 – 1997 to see this is."

Questions.
--- Might have been "worth six figures" when they met.
$100,000 or $999,000, a pretty wide range, either way, a healthy chunk of change.
--- Portfolio of properties worth ~
$5 million dollars at time he disappeared.
Total market value of properties or their net equity in properties?

--- "Roughly ten yrs" before his divorce & [during?] our marriage.
I'm no math wizard but if they met ~1990, married in 1991; he was last seen in Aug 1997, per in my post #14), seems their partnership span was more like seven, maaaybeee eight yrs. Admittedly, a small point.
-- Her stmts in 3rd paragraph seem to make sense --- if (some) $/properties accumulated during first marriage were
titled in a trust f/b/o the 3 daughters for distrib on his death, and if $/properties accumulated during their marriage were titled in a trust for her (presumed eventual) benefit, on his death. Common way to handle, does not seem far-fetched.
--- Has anyone looked at county recorder's property records to see how prop's were actually titled/conveyed? In individual names, JTWROS, community property, or trust, or other?

Carole Baskin Responds

"THE MAIN PEOPLE INTERVIEWED AND THEIR LIES" [per Carole, in T-K series]
Carole adressed stmts made by the following ppl interviewed in T-K series:
--- Anne McQ, JDL's business assistant for many years.
--- Wendell W, who graded on property that later became BigCat Rescue site and had other business transactions w JDL.

--- JDL’s ex-wife (Gladys or GLC) and their dau's who spoke on camera.

Carole Baskin Responds Further
"THE SUPPOSED 'CIRCUMSTANTIAL' EVIDENCE" [per Carole, in T-K series]
Carole addressed these seven points.
1. "
The Application for a Restraining Order."
2. "Don disappeared two months later on August 18, 1997." Timing, R/O app & last seen date.
3. “Disappearance” in the Power of Attorney." Why use term 'disappearance?' in the doc?
4. "Flying to Costa Rica."
5. "The Van and Airport."
6. "The Meat Grinder."
7. "The Office Trailer."

I have not but I absolutely agree with you that looking at actual court records, property records etc. it's a good way to go. The restraining order is a good one too.

Sorry, i don't know how to bring a comment to the thread. Quoting @Disco1

Just watched, “Tiger King.” Midway through episode 3 or 4, Carole state’s that her missing husbands flight license was going to expire the day after he died!!!!! She just admitted knowing the date he died!!!!!! Tried to contact Hillsborough police tip line and dispatcher did not know what I was talking about and redirected me to place a tip online. I did not submit a tip online out of frustration and inconvenience. Feel free to submit tip if you would like!

BBM

Yesterday after watching episode #4, i came here to check if there was a thread on JDL and there wasn't...(Thank you @TTF14, there is now), but @Disco1 noticed the exact same thing that made me rush here and look JDL up. This morning, i rewatched episodes #3 and #4 and, not only CB stated JDL's flight license was going to expire the day after he died as she also stated that JDL lost the license the day after he got it. There's definitely something missing here!
Fortunately the FL Sheriff reopened the case.

JDL's Disappearance, gen. background/timeline.
@floridamomma I've not found much yet, but here's a start re disappearance. Many of the events in T-K series occurred after that.

19__? 35+ yr(?) marriage to Gladys ended.
19__? JDL met Carole.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Carole refuted ^ this re financials, as well as many other points in the T-K series. See https://bigcatrescue.org/refuting-netflix-tiger-king/

SBM

According to Carole ( Tiger King, episode #3), she met JDL "in January of 1981. I was 20 years old (...) he was 22 years my senior so he was 42."

ETA: The way they met is disturbing... IMO & JMO

Don't know if an approved source but here it goes: A Bombshell Tip Leads Us Closer To Finding Out What Happened To Don Lewis?

"It seems like Carole is insinuating that she gave Kenny the guns well after Don's disappearance. Patricia alleges that Kenny came home with the guns the day before (8/17/97) Don Lewis reportedly went missing (8/18/97). If Patricia is telling the truth, why would Kenny be in possession of Don's guns the day before he went missing?"

And Carole's original rebuttal to Netflix Tiger King https://www.bcrwatch.com/uploads/2/6/8/1/26816874/original_refuting_netflix_tiger_king.pdf

It's the first time i read about someone getting rid of their "loved" one's possessions the day after (or the day before in this case) they went missing. She knew JDL was gone forever!

what way did they meet?
Tiger King episode #3
JDL was driving down Nebraska street and he saw CB walking alongside the road, crying after a fight with MM. By the third time JDL tried to convince her to get in the car, he handed her a gun that was on the passenger seat and told CB to point the gun at him while he was driving and that he just needed someone to talk to. She got in the car and they spent the night together.
This was in 1981. She left MM in 1984.

Ages, Years, Relationship.

@PatLaurel Thanks for pointing this out.
Per HCSO poster, JDL was born in 1938, so in 1981 was 42 y/o, <---as you say (or ~43 yo?).
In 1981 & she was 20 y/o <---as you say (depending on actual b'day & meeting day).
If they met in 19
81, rather than 1991, that more than doubles length of their relationship as I had (mis-?)calculated it. He was last seen in 1997.
That makes me question her comment about "roughly ten years " partnership as her criterion for dividing the various properties into the two different trusts - one benefit of his dau's and one for benefit of Carole (and JDL?).
Were any of the stated ages & years, etc.verified by ppl other than interviewees? Ditto other info provided in interviews.
Thx again for pointing this this info.
And yes, her story about the way they met was, well, not one that often leads to marriage.

JDL's Petition for Injunction for Protection Against Domestic Violence
At link is image of JDL's handwritten request he (<---apparently) completed and signed June 12, 1997. Also at link: Order Denying Temporary Injunction which judge signed June 12 w "Reason: no immediate threat..." (followed by a few words I cannot decipher.)
