MAJOR DEVELOPMENT in the case of missing 13-year-old Madeline Soto:

This evening, the Kissimmee Police Department, working in conjunction with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, arrested Stephan Sterns, 37, for sexual battery and possession of child sexual abuse material.

Stephan Sterns is the boyfriend of Madeline’s mother, and the last confirmed person to see her on the morning of Monday, February 26.

During the investigation into Madeline’s disappearance, Orange County Sheriff’s Office detectives discovered disturbing images when they forensically examined Sterns’ phone. A review of the phone’s data revealed attempts to delete evidence.

Through the work of our Digital Forensics Unit earlier today, detectives discovered images and videos that were criminal, and sexual in nature.

Detectives then were able to determine that those crimes were committed at the family home in Kissimmee, and they immediately notified Kissimmee Police. At this time, KPD detectives are the lead on the sexual battery case, working alongside members of our Criminal Investigations Division.

OCSO is still actively investigating Madeline’s disappearance and Sterns is considered the prime suspect at this time.

This afternoon, Sterns was brought to OCSO Central Operations where he was interviewed by Kissimmee PD and OCSO detectives. He invoked his right to an attorney and was placed under arrest and transported to jail, where we expect he will be held on no bond.

“Stephan Sterns had an opportunity tonight to come clean with detectives and help lead them to information about Maddie’s disappearance,” said Sheriff John Mina. “Her loved ones deserve answers and OCSO and the Kisssimmee Police will not stop until we find Maddie.”

The search for Madeline continues.
In the spoiler is the text from the X/tweet accompanying the "perp walk" video in case you don't have X/twitter.

I’m going to sound like a Monday morning quarterback…but I KNEW it when I read he was the last person to see here. I just had a visceral gut reaction to that, which sometimes happens to me. I didn’t want to say anything because I didn’t want to derail the thread or accuse an innocent u til proven guilty party without facts or some logic to back it up.
echo this… sadly, when I heard the sheriff’s comment about her wanting to live in the woods, I wondered if it meant she needed to get out of a bad situation.

Yup, I thought the same thing. Sadly I suspect that this girl has spent way too much time at the hands of this monster. Any time at all is too much time, but I’m guessing we will discover it went on for awhile before it escalated. My heart breaks for her.

Yeah, do we know where that information came from (church parking lot)? If it’s a camera, then there’s a chance she ran away, and the sexual abuse is why. If it’s not reliable, then we know the ending.
The sheriff said in the press conference that the surveillance video was very poor quality and they couldn't be positive it was her. :(

What is this guys background? Edit… because it says he was a cast member at DISNEY!

Eta— girls if your man follows other girls like this guy in Facebook… Leave him!
Well we know from police that this guy has a thing for kids, so working at Disney fits perfectly.

I can't find any criminal record on this guy, at least in Florida. Public records say he also lived in Orange County California, and funny enough, within Orange County Florida. He does have a ton of traffic violations in Florida spanning the past 20 years, and a case in small claims court, but that's the extent of it.

Does anyone else notice a surge in these types of cases? Lately it has been one missing child after the other-with horrible outcomes (praise God Charlotte Sena was found alive, so there is alway hope). I’m still angry from the Audrii Cunningham case (RIP little angel).
What in the hell (excuse my language) is happening? Nasty, scum perverted predators-forgot to add stupid to the list of names…and these predators think they won’t get caught?

Im so angry, I'll never understood why boyfriends are allowed to be alone with young girls. I hope she ran away and gets home safe.
It’s a common fear for single mothers, but what’s the solutions? Should single mothers only be allowed to date casually? Fathers can abuse young girls, as can uncles and girlfriends and neighbors and babysitters and teachers. There’s no way to be 100% confident that your child is safe with someone. Just gotta do the best you can.

We don’t know anything about the mother or the mother’s boyfriend. For all we know, they’d been together for ten years before he would ever be near Madeline alone. Or maybe they just met a month ago. We just have no clue yet.

“Through the work of our Digital Forensics Unit earlier [Wednesday], detectives discovered images and videos that were criminal, and sexual in nature,” the sheriff’s office said.

Detectives learned the alleged crimes were committed at the family home in Kissimmee.

The phone’s data showed that Sterns allegedly attempted to delete evidence, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Stephan Sterns had an opportunity tonight to come clean with detectives and help lead them to information about Maddie’s disappearance,” Mina said in a statement. “Her loved ones deserve answers and OCSO and the Kissimmee Police will not stop until we find Maddie.”

Sheriff Mina said Soto was dropped off near Peace United Methodist Church on Town Loop Boulevard, a half-mile from the school.

It remains unclear why she was dropped off at this location, but Sheriff Mina said she was possibly "embarrassed" by her vehicle and asked her mom's boyfriend to be dropped off there.

"Why not drop her off at the school?" Sheriff Mina asked during Wednesday's press conference, adding that the sheriff's office is looking into it.

The woods behind Hunter's Creek Middle School are among the areas deputies have been searching in, Sheriff Mina said. Over 100 personnel, including deputies, detectives, intelligence analysts, specialized personnel, and bloodhounds, have been deployed to help search for the missing teenager.

"This is every parent's worst nightmare. … We can't even imagine the pain and anguish that Madeline's family is going through," Sheriff Mina said. "We will not stop until we find her."
