Joevan Joseph, 19, asserted his innocence as Palm Beach County Sheriff&#8217;s deputies escorted him in handcuffs into a car at the criminal justice complex on Gun Club Road.

Joseph said only that &#8220;I didn&#8217;t do it,&#8221; when asked about the slaying of Makeva Jenkins, an entrepreneur and mother of three killed just hours after she celebrated her financial success on Facebook.

Makeva Jenkins’ family pleaded with the public in August for clues.

Euri Jenkins was not at the news conference. When reporters asked Harold Willis about his absence, she responded: “We have no idea about her husband or where he is or what’s going on with that.”

Harold Willis and Euri Jenkins could not be reached for comment Saturday.

Sheriff’s authorities have stayed quiet about the investigation, not commenting on a motive or suspect after the attack. The sheriff’s office did not comment beyond releasing Joseph’s name Saturday.

A police report detailing Joseph’s arrest will be made public Tuesday.

No bond. Things moved fast in the last few days:

Since they are out of town for a family reunion, they missed the suspect's first appearance where we learned the Public Defender's Office e is asking to withdraw from the case.

Joseph walked into the courtroom handcuffed and showing no emotion.

A grand jury indicted him on a first degree murder charge for the death of local mother of three Jenkins.

Grand Jury Indictment can be read at the link. From the article:

A grand jury indicted Joevan Joseph, 19, on Aug. 31 in Jenkins’ June 29 killing. Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office authorities booked Joseph on Saturday into the Palm Beach County Jail on a first-degree murder charge.

It reads, in part: Joseph “did unlawfully from a premeditated design to effect the death of a human being, kill and murder Makeva Jenkins, a human being, by shooting Makeva Jenkins.”

Sheriff’s authorities have said that at about 2 a.m., a masked intruder entered the home on Plumbago Place, just west of Boynton Beach. I'm not a lawyer so JMO. Usually it's because the Public Defender's Office has represented someone related to the case in the past and believes it would go against the best legal interests of the accused at trial.That creates a conflict of interest. IOW, with whom does the attorney's fiduciary duty lie? Attorney-client privilege applies to former clients too so an outside attorney is then appointed to resolve the conflict.

The Public Defender's Office can be likened to a regular law office and so if there's a conflict with one attorney there's a conflict with all the attorneys.There are other reasons too but in this case, according to msm:

A bond hearing was scheduled for Sunday, but could not be held because the Palm Beach County Public Defender’s Office could not represent Joseph due to a conflict of interest it has with the victim’s family, a stand-in attorney with the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office said.

Palm Beach County Judge Ted Booras said at the hearing at the criminal justice complex on Gun Club Road that an outside attorney would be appointed to represent Joseph, and that a full bond hearing would be scheduled for Tuesday.

As an example, in Bella Grogan-Cannella's case, an early defense attorney withdrew because he had defended her mom Tania and stepfather in a different case. At trial both will be "significant" witnesses for the state. Again, the withdrawal included the entire office, not just the one attorney, the same as in a private law firm.

So, it's likely IMO that someone in Makeva's family had been represented by the Public Defender in the past and who will possibly be called as a witness if JJ goes to trial.

The DA can get to the bottom of this very quickly. Charge it as a DP case and watch the suspect give up all the information. We won't be surprised where it leads.

The man accused of killing a Lake Worth woman has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder.

Joseph was scheduled to appear in Palm Beach County court on Sept. 19 but waived his arraignment and pleaded not guilty.
