My in-laws used to drive an Impala when they first moved to Florida, but I think it was a more recent vintage. 1976 maybe.
The Impala came in both convertible (soft-top) and hardtop models. This is the hardtop--made to look like a convertible with the top up, but basically just a sedan with no doorpost between driver and passenger doors (if four-door) or just the window if it's a two-door hardtop, the most common kind. This one is the wrong color but it gives a good idea of the lines: https://images.app.goo.gl/HNy5o1gDSypmb4Jx
In my experience, if Marjorie's car was a convertible, they would have said so. Convertibles always were relatively uncommon. They don't say whether two-door or four-door, but the two-door was more common.
And my guess is that while she was sitting in the parking lot, she accidentally knocked the car into gear (maybe while trying to get out so she didn't get sick in the car) and it drove right across the highway into the water.
added: I don't see anything in the pictures of the Lake Michigan car that would tell me it's not the car the Wilsons were driving.
