It is possible for people to get into debt by overextending themselves with employees, offices, family expenses (sports, clothes, food, medical, Christmas gifts, travel, etc) rental properties, trips. In fact most Americans are in debt. The difference here, besides murdering his whole family, is the degree of debt and level of deception. He didn’t have one cent left to even pay his rent. He told no one including family, employees, friends etc that they were in such dire straights and about to be evicted, lose their jobs, and that their checks were about to bounce at Christmas, no less. Not to mention the fraud against the insurance companies, and the 20 plus high interest loans and cash advances.
Another curious thing is that he paid creditors $278,000 the day before he killed everyone. Instead of paying family’s rent and employees salary at Christmas. Odd choice to say the least. Where did he get that money and what was his reasoning. That would be enough cash to pay rent for 4.5 years. Unless one of those creditors was a line at a casino n he didn’t want to it known he was gambling, wrongly thinking it would never be found out. My guess is since he did have the cash it seems to temporarily bail himself out maybe he was just so devastated and embarrassed by something (maybe compulsive gambling n the inability to quit) that he saw no other long term option then to stop the bleeding by paying off creditors and wiping out family n possibly himself. But he had plenty of time to commit suicide and did not. jmo.
