It is possible for people to get into debt by overextending themselves with employees, offices, family expenses (sports, clothes, food, medical, Christmas gifts, travel, etc) rental properties, trips. In fact most Americans are in debt. The difference here, besides murdering his whole family, is the degree of debt and level of deception. He didn’t have one cent left to even pay his rent. He told no one including family, employees, friends etc that they were in such dire straights and about to be evicted, lose their jobs, and that their checks were about to bounce at Christmas, no less. Not to mention the fraud against the insurance companies, and the 20 plus high interest loans and cash advances.

Another curious thing is that he paid creditors $278,000 the day before he killed everyone. Instead of paying family’s rent and employees salary at Christmas. Odd choice to say the least. Where did he get that money and what was his reasoning. That would be enough cash to pay rent for 4.5 years. Unless one of those creditors was a line at a casino n he didn’t want to it known he was gambling, wrongly thinking it would never be found out. My guess is since he did have the cash it seems to temporarily bail himself out maybe he was just so devastated and embarrassed by something (maybe compulsive gambling n the inability to quit) that he saw no other long term option then to stop the bleeding by paying off creditors and wiping out family n possibly himself. But he had plenty of time to commit suicide and did not. jmo.

I also wonder what day he really killed them. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was on Christmas. A lot of family annihilators choose this time. Wouldn’t she have plans with extended family for holiday. Wouldn’t they at least try to call her for holiday. Anyone know the last official date anyone spoke to his wife? We know they were dead by at least the 27th since police went there and there was no answer. So obviously it happened sometime before that. I wonder if neighbors heard any arguing. And I wonder if he paid the $278,000 to creditors right before or right after killings.

Here in Germany that med is called mirtazapin. I went to the doctor and take a different one now.:)

Yes, mirtazepine is popular here in the States too. Brand name is Remeron. We prescribe it a lot of sleep at 7.5 mg or 15 mg at bedtime. And yes, increased appetite/weight gain is a well established side effect/result. Sometimes we chose that medication just for that reason in someone with poor sleep and depression with decreased appetite. @whatsnext... I am sorry you had that experience. I am glad you went back to your provider and got on something different.

I wonder if the reason he killed them inside the house was bc it was easiest and to frame an intruder, as his dad attempted to do. Interesting how he’s been charged with premeditated murder. I wonder if that means premeditated that day or months in advance. And how they are so certain. Maybe he told them or maybe they have computer data that shows searches. I think he killed the dog so he wouldn’t bark. That would have had to have been poison or gunshot on the dog.

This is what I wonder, too. It wouldn't surprise me if he staged the house and left a door unlocked and flew to CT for a few days hoping they'd be discovered. Flew back home when the silence became deafening and the money was drying up.

I'd also like to know who spoke to Megan and the kids on a regular basis. The boys were old enough to have friends in the neighborhood and hopefully had a few buddies to trek off down to the lake with. I wonder if Alek had a cell and if anyone was texting him during the unknown weeks.

And who did Megan confide in/chat with/complain to? Wonder what her cell-phone reveals. SM is filled with a lot of peripheral people that seem to see her walking the dog and outside with her kids, but no one that seems close enough to paint a more intimate picture.

I also wonder if neighbors witnessing the "packed" car were told by TT that they were going on a vacation. If I knew my neighbor flew back and forth from CT several times a month, and saw some luggage in the back of his car, I'd just assume he's going back to CT and not necessarily conclude the entire family was going.

I wonder if he hid the car somewhere and snuck back, to make it look like they were all away? I wonder if mail comes directly to the houses? Jmo

Thanks for posting this article. His mother couldn't wrap her mind around the fact that he tried to have her murdered and it took years for her to finally accept it. The father was engaged to another woman, who didn't know he was even married, and that marriage was slated to occur about a month after the murder attempt on his wife. He also was involved with a very young woman at the same time. Multiple secret lives going on.

What I wonder is how AT's father planned to explain his two children (one being AT) to his fiance, or if he had plans to murder them as well. He did a lot of planning to have his wife murdered, but apparently didn't seem to think things through as to how he was really going to get away with it all. JMO, this might help explain why AT was in that house for weeks, with the bodies of his family and the family dog. He didn't commit suicide, but it appears, at least from what we know now, he may not have had any kind of escape plan. It will be interesting to learn if he was working on an escape plan to escape not only the murders, but also the federal charges.

I wonder if his mother ever sought professional counseling for him for this, or if she just told him that his father was innocent, and he realized much later that his father was guilty. This trumps anything I've read about what Chris Watts may have experienced with his family of origin, though there are likely secrets we will never know about on that, IMO.

This case brings up a lot of thoughts in my mind about the theory that monsters are created by a combination of nature and nurture.

All JMO.

Great post and really good point on the cell phones of wife and kids! I hope it’s all made public one day. In the PC the sheriff said TT was still speaking with investigators but I’m sure they will remain quiet so they don’t f up the case in case some greasy greedy defense attorney convinces him he’s innocent, to recant his confession, n go to trial.

Well, I'm looking back at breaking news with photos and thinking to myself. The electricity was shut off, he was secluded in a house with numerous decomposing bodies but managed to shave. The things that jump out to me. Jmo.
Very good point. He must have been out n about n didn’t want to tip anyone off as to the horror in his life/house.

Possibly. My thoughts on the mail is that it is possible he had it set up so that everything went to his CT practice. JMO, he was hiding a lot of secrets from her and she had no clue about any of it. This level of trust does exist in some marriages and I feel very sorry for the spouses of the disordered, who eventually become victims because they were too trusting. JMO.

I know. Same here. Very curious, right?
Most professionals own property, they don’t rent. He obviously had no cash left from the sale of CT house to put down on anything in FL.

Agree. A rental doesn't make sense when you can write off mortgage interest and property taxes on your taxes. For an expensive home, the tax savings can be significant. Rental payments can't be deducted.

JMO, I think the living "arrangement" with her and the children living in Florida and him commuting weekly to CT to run the practice is odd. I wouldn't think it was odd if there was significant income from the CT business, and a lot of money in savings. Clearly, that wasn't the case at all. Its hard for me to imagine a mother feeling comfortable in having this kind of arrangement, knowing they were beyond being in financial peril and that he was committing fraud to try to keep up with high finance loans. I think she had no clue. JMO.

This case makes me think of the Walter Scott quotation "“Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive." The extent of his deception may have been monumental.

All JMO.

Do we know, for a fact, that the electricity to the house had been shut off? Or that he went to CT after he killed his family? I've not seen anything in MSM about this, but I could have missed an article. It would be good to know, for sure, on both the electricity and the trip to CT, whether it's true or whether it is a rumor.

I had to apologize earlier since I cant find MSM on him returning to CT.

Then, in late December, the landlord of the home on Reserve Place in the Disney-designed community filed an eviction notice for the family.

Duke Energy records show that the utility shut off power at the home last week.

Good point. And imagine if she had no idea about the debt n just kept spending as if they had a lot. This could have pushed him over the edge. <modsnip: not in MSM>

Thank you so much! I recall reading that article when it first was published, but I completely missed that the power had been shut off. He lived in that house for weeks, with the bodies of his family and the family's dog, and that is absolutely hideous. But that he lived in it for what appears to have been at least a week, with no power! That goes beyond being absolutely hideous.

I had a family member when I was a kid who was a Joe Kenda type homicide detective. He talked about his job and his experiences, so I grew up with an awareness that some people are capable of incredible horror and evil. I have to admit that some of the cases on Websleuths exceed what I thought was even possible. This is one of those cases.

I'm guessing October was the last time Duke Energy was paid. Jmo.

The interesting thing is that even if he was in deep debt, if he had at least the $278,000 cash to tide them over and pay the rent why end it all right then and there. It’s probably bc of the fraud charges and losing his license. He may have seen no light at the end of that tunnel, just embarrassment for himself and family. But even if he lost his and went to jail, his wife could have found work to support her kids and I’m sure her family would have helped out.

Are you referring to the money that he paid to a lender right before the murders?
