On the girl's shirt I am sure we can see the letters D I S N and that the E and Y are probably curving, hidden, around her body.

In the two circles are faces I think. I agree that the one on top of the D is probably Donald Duck, and the one on top of the S looks like a pig's face. I can't think of any Disney pigs though.

Not on my pic, but if you look at the original zoom here, the letters look three dimensional. Does anyone recall there was a fad for T shirts decorated with some sort of puffy plastic stuff, that could not be ironed? Was that in the 80s90s?

I'm not seeing Disney in that lettering, at all, sorry.. IMO Calypso was a better fit to the overall letter shapes and the position of the 'S' character, though it might not be quite right either.

The dog on the boy's shirt looks quite like an English Bull Terrier. The white dog with black eye is a pretty common image for them. I did several searches and got a lot of images that are 'sort of' like it, but nothing exact.

I actually thought it was a koala bear at first, with the black spot being its nose and the round ears on top.. Just goes to show how a blurry image can distort perception.

I'm flipping English and I never recognise them! I always confuse them with Churchill's dog, but they can't be the same breed, can they?

I used to own bull terriers. :)

The character on the boy's shirt could well be a panda or a koala. I was thinking Disney characters because of what might be on the girl's shirt. It could be any character popular in 1989 with US kids.

I do wonder if it was actually the boy's own tee though. It seems a bit of a young choice for a boy of 8? 9?

Anybody with kids or young enough to remember any of these movies, and if 'our' bear/dog appeared in them?

Yes, that type dog was very popular in the 80's and 90's.

There was a children's show called "wishbone" that used a Jack Russel Terrier and others.

In my opinion, the image on the boys shirt is a caricature of a "Jack Russel" puppy.

Searching now for a good example.

In Oliver and Company, Francis is the English Bull dog who was part of Oliver's crew.

I've done some image sharpening and a side by side with a pic of Tara. To me, the nose, curve of the right brow, the size and shape of the eyes and the jaw line are close matches. The shape of the ear and especially the hairline are almost exactly the same. I do think it is Tara. As for the left brow (what would be her right, perhaps there is some distortion from the scan of the polaroid, or jpeg artifacting that seem to flatten it, but with her expression, the brow would be dropped, rather than lifted in previous photos of her that I've seen as portraits. Also, with some contrast added, the eyes tell a different story. Maybe one of being worn out and lost. I don't think these expression are staged now. As for the shirt, could it maybe say 'Lyles' or similar?

I swear it looks like the same dog on the far right of the girl's shirt that is on the boy's shirt. It appears to be the same character....but the girl's shirt does have some letters. Am I crazy or what? Does anyone else see that?

I see it too, but I'm very aware that I might just be reading things into random blotches, e.g. if the boy's tshirt had a train on it I might see a train instead.

I thought it could be 'lyre__', especially as there could be a lyre-like symbol in the middle of the printing. However, having googled lyres it seems an unlikely subject for a t-shirt or a young girl!

You may be correct about the second letter being a Y. It could be Daffy Duck's (she's wearing a skirt) outstretched arms forming it. If so, the first letter could be a dog with arms folded and foot sticking out (perhaps to form an L or even E), and the third and fifth letters could be similar dogs.

Alternatively the first 'three' letters look very much like a large letter M, with Daffy Duck standing behind it. If so it could either be followed by (and joined up with) a U or V (looking quite cat-like) which would result in a three letter word, or maybe it's followed by a '&' with a single letter after it.

Good job on both the sleuthing and the photo work.

I don't agree that they are a match but that's only because I believe I have a match of my own. I'm still doing some work on it but I would like to use your image and others in this thread in my analysis.

I know it's important to the families involved for closure to solve these cases sooner - rather than later but I have a family crisis of my own right now. My father is in hospice and I'm his primary care giver so I'm afraid I can't commit as much time as I used to - for this case and others.

To those who can, PLEASE keep up the great work!

I'm certainly interested in your match. I guess part of the reason I think she may be Tara (or another missing person/abductee) is because I find it hard to believe that nobody would have come forward to identify the subjects had it been a prank. Maybe not so much nowadays, but certainly when the case was hot those many years ago. Though this case has plenty of renewed interest of late. It is a shame we don't have access to a high res scan of the polaroid. The compression artifacting from the available web images is quite bad.

Looking at this, my first impression of the dog was Spuds McKenzie, the Budlight dog from the 80's. I searched it, and see that someone else had the same thought. I'm searching for tshirts now. The problem is that most of the tshirt pics show the back with the more elaborate design, and then they had a smaller icon on the front left breast.
