Mystery of the missing Melrose men

KAREN VOYLES Sun staff writer

A year ago today, a couple of guys left their families' homes and haven't been seen since.
Charles Alphonzo Waldon, 31, and Robert Edward Julian Jr., 45, disappeared after Waldon drove to Julian's home to pick him up in a rental car.
“I don't know what happened, but it had to be life or death for him not to come home,” said Waldon's wife, Karen Waldon. “What I don't understand is how two grown men and a rental car could have vanished off the face of this Earth.”
Earlier this summer, a new investigator was assigned to the case by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. Shane Harrell has put out posters of the missing men, requested search warrants for cell phone records and re-interviewed potential witnesses.

“Adults can leave and go as they please and the evidence indicates that they did leave their homes on their own,” Harrell said. “Now that they have been missing for a year, that doesn't look good, but there have been situations where people were missing for five or six years and then they show up at home one day.”
Three days before Julian and Waldon disappeared, W. L. Durden, 53, a Putnam Hall man described as a good friend of both men, was found shot to death inside his home on Country Living Circle.

The case remains unsolved, so investigators have no way of knowing if it holds any clues to the Julian and Waldon disappearances, Harrell said.
“There have been lots of rumors and street talk about all of this, but nothing we have ever been able to pin down, including stories about how they went out to where Hurricane Katrina made landfall and got washed away,” Harrell said.
Just in case foul play or tragedy was involved, family members of both men have recently provided investigators with DNA samples to speed identification.
Julian had lived with his mother for three years, helping her care for her 98-year-old father. Betty Julian said she talked to her son every day, in person or on the phone.

Karen Waldon said her husband of nine years sometimes stayed out late, but always came home. Charles Waldon had prepared Sunday dinner for his wife and their two daughters shortly before he left to pick up Julian at Julian's home around 4:30 p.m. the day they went missing.
“We don't know where they were going or why, but he seemed fine when he left here,” Karen Waldon said.
Julian, a car painter, and Waldon, who did odd jobs and bred dogs, were last seen in a rented 2005 Buick Rendezvous that Waldon was driving. Investigators determined that the car had been rented from Budget in Gainesville by the mother of one of Waldon's friends. The car has not been seen since, investigators said.
Because Waldon was the last person seen driving the car, his name and the car's description were entered into the state and federal computer systems, including the FBI's National Crime Information Center. Julian's name and identifying information was already in the system because he had violated his probation on a charge of driving with a suspended license. Both men had arrest records for non-violent crimes, officials said.

Putnam County Sheriff's Major Keith Riddick said the situation “is not unheard of — we have several missing adults from back in the 1980s — but it is rare.”
Erin Bruno, director of case management at the Phoenix-based nonprofit National Center for Missing Adults, said there is a reason why some missing adults get exposure and others don't — gender.
“There is a bias that men are capable of taking care of themselves and so if they are missing, they may have chosen to be gone,” he said.
Family members hope anyone with information will come forward. “We really need closure, to know what has happened to them,” Karen Waldon said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Shane Harrell at the Putnam County Sheriff's office at (386) 329-0863.

Curious if there's been any update on this.
"Investigators learned that two unknown men were the possible attackers and it appeared they were trying to break into the home."
