I am sorry the experience wasn't all it could have been. Would you say that the artichokes were the best part of the meal? I am intrigued by those artichokes.

Unquestionably! These were large, long-stemmed Jerusalem artichokes. Lightly sauteed in olive oil and presented like upside-down flowers on the plate with lemon aioli and black sea salt. We love artichokes and always have marinated artichokes on hand. We put them in pasta dishes, pasta salads, on Naan pizzas.

Sounds good, and yet, sad. I hate it when it is a special occasion, and the food is a disappointment.

While "The Melting Pot" is a chain, we have always had a delicious meal there. Too much food, but I love fondue. The cheese fondue is delicious. And the chocolate fondue for dessert, served with fresh fruit and angel food cake is yummy!
I have dined at several different Italian restaurants where I have been disappointed. These were not chains but each was a fairly expensive well regarded Italian restaurant.

I have left each restaurant after a disappointing Italian meal, knowing that I could have prepared the same meal at home and it would have been better.

Websleuths has been running very slowly the past couple of days, and I was reluctant to start writing a review of our dinner date and have the site freeze up on me. We enjoyed our much-needed evening out but were unimpressed with the food at Andiamo in Bloomfield Township. The restaurant is classy and elegant, service was friendly and capable, and there were some very nice touches like decanting our wine, grating fresh parmesan on salads/entrees, and offering freshly ground black pepper. When DH made the reservation (by phone), he was asked if we were celebrating a special occasion. He received a complimentary dessert (raspberry sorbet with chocolate sauce), but we also got a slice of New York Style Cheesecake to go and enjoyed it later in the evening.

We asked our waiter for recommendation on a shared appetizer, and he suggested the colossal shrimp, but DH was planning to order the seafood pasta dish, so we opted for the Jerusalem artichokes that were awesome. There were three large artichokes sauteed in olive oil and served with a lemony aioli and black sea salt. DH had two, and I had just one because I was going to order a chicken entree that included artichokes. Bread basket had several slices of crusty baguette and breadsticks that went well with our salads. I had a mini-Caesar salad - sans anchovies - with my dressing on the side. DH had the house salad that was drenched in vinaigrette: He wished that he had requested dressing on the side.

DH was disappointed with his seafood pasta that had two shrimps, two sea scallops, two mussels, and too much rubbery calamari, including tentacles that looked disgusting. The pasta sauce was nice but the dish in no way compares to a similar dish at Picano's. I ordered Chicken Olivia that is similar to Mamma Assunta that I enjoy at Picano's and have replicated at home. I didn't care for the presentation with two chicken breast halves on one said of an oval plate with penne pasta w/sauce and a medley of vegetables all glopped together on the other side of the plate. I would have preferred the vegetables on a separate plate, and I could have done without the pasta altogether. The chicken breasts in their lemon butter sauce were very good, but the veggie medley wasn't hot and was basically flavorless. The pasta sauce on the penne was awful. We both had leftovers for lunch yesterday as portions were more than ample.

Our waiter, Anthony, was a very nice looking young man with good energy and a pleasant personality. When I ordered my entree, Chicken Olivia, I was trying to be clever and funny by saying that I wanted the chicken dish that was named for one of the stars of Gone With the Wind (Olivia de Havilland) and one of the characters on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Olivia Benson). Anthony didn't know about either one of the Olivias but knew what I wanted because it's the only menu item with a person's name. We wondered what rock he lives under :D We decided not to ask Anthony if he knew the history of the restaurant site where he works. Andiamo occupies the building that used to be Machus Red Fox from which Jimmy Hoffa disappeared after having lunch on July 31, 1975. The rest, as they say, is history: Jimmy Hoffa was never seen or heard from again.

Interesting review! I'm sorry the food was disappointing. It makes me wonder which restaurant we will go to for our first dine-in meal in more than a year. A few of our old favorites are gone forever, sadly.

We are already planning to go to Picano's next week, especially after the disappointing dinner at Andiamo. We've been going to Picano's since they opened in 1985 and have never had a bad meal or service. We will eventually get to Mexican Village but will probably wait until there's 100% capacity for indoor dining. MV isn't spacious enough to accommodate patrons with appropriate social distancing. After we've both had our second Pfizer doses and cleared a two-week waiting period, we might consider going to Mexican Village in mid April when we are protected from Covid.

Same. We went for a very special event to an Italian restaurant we had been to previously, and loved. And it was beyond awful. No A/C, it was 90 outside. The meal was terrible, from burnt toast bruschetta, warm water, the food was slow, awful, I couldn't wait to go home.

A pear salad, the pear was as hard as a rock! WTH?!

We talked about going out to dinner again, last night. Honestly, I would just prefer to stay home.

I forgot to mention the safety measures in place at Andiamo. Masks required when entering, leaving, moving about the restaurant. All staff wear masks. Immediately upon entering, you are instructed to use the wall-mounted temperature scan that indicates audibly, "Normal temperature".

I read a review for Andiamo from someone who refused to use the temperature scanner and was denied entrance. Nasty comment about not submitting to any type of body scanning except for a physician. I guess that means the individual doesn't fly anywhere: All airports have security scanners, and you can't board an aircraft without passing through the body scanner.

Heck, a majority of the large plant employers have thermal scans set up as you come in the gate.
I would love to have a seafood boil on the beach. Or an informal oyster roast with newspaper on the picnic table with friends.
Having someone else cook would be so nice.

Here's the review from the guy who refused to do the temperature scan. Sounds like a total jerk  The review is from June, 2020.

My mother made reservations there today for Father's Day dinner. When my wife and I arrived, the host said we needed to step up to a "scanner" which they had mounted to the wall and would allegedly scan our temperature, before we would be allowed to be seated with our family, who was already there. I refused to be scanned, and was told I could not dine there. My wife chose to be scanned, I did not, and was told I could not join my family for dinner.

Last I checked, Andiamo is not my doctor, and therefore has no business scanning my body for anything. I understand this is a private business and they have every right to put in place any policy they like. But I have every right not to have my body scanned, before I can sit down and fork over 100's of dollars to their establishment, and join my family for dinner.

Over the years I have spent thousands of dollars at Andiamo; but no more. I will never dine in that Orwellian restaurant again.

He’s not too bright if he equates a temperature scanner with body scanner. I guess his plan is to self limit his life experiences. Not that anyone would care since he’s such a pompous ignoramus.

The ignoramus claims to have spent thousands of $$$ at Andiamo over the years. Seems to me that someone with these means would also travel. DTW has had passenger security scanners for 20 years, and no one is exempt from a full body scan before proceeding to a boarding gate in the terminal. TSA would escort this guy out of the terminal if he refused to enter the body scanner. I call bullsh** on his lame excuse for not allowing a temperature scan that was not at all invasive.

Guessing he’s never had a safe deposit box at a bank either. They’ve been using biometrics since 2002.

So I guess he chose to ruin the dinner for his family.

The ignorance is astounding- and of course he is a jerk as well

One of my pet peeves is when people write underserved bad reviews for restaurants or businesses. Especially now when so many restaurants and businesses are struggling due to COVID.

I recently read a one star review (and the person wrote, “I would give zero stars if I could”) for a locally owned steakhouse. The person wrote a scathing review just blasting the restaurant because they did not offer mac and cheese on the kids menu.

The person wrote that after glancing at the kids menu they quickly realized that mac & cheese wasn’t on it. But they proceeded to order it anyway because that was what their 3 year old wanted.

The server explained that they did not serve mac & cheese in the restaurant, and the reviewer wrote, “I told him to tell the kitchen to MAKE some then because that is the only thing my child wants. You have cheese, right? So what’s the problem?? MAKE IT.”

She went on to write that the manager came out and apologized to her and said they couldn’t make the mac & cheese but they would comp part of the meal.

She said her child SCREAMED throughout the meal because she wanted mac & cheese, and that ruined their nice evening out. My guess is that the screaming child in a nice steakhouse probably ruined the experience for other diners as well.

Anyway, I hate to see restaurant reviews that are unfair. Especially during COVID people can do real damage to restaurant reputations and their business.

I hope the restaurant bans the family, spoilt brat and all

So she just announced, in writing, to the world, what a lousy parent she is. If you don’t teach your children how to deal with disappointment at home, how do you expect them to deal with it in public? So yes, her piss poor parenting ruined everyone’s evening.

Exactly! And if the child is so picky maybe mom should have checked the menu before they decided to go that particular restaurant.

Many nicer steakhouses have few kids menu options.

People like this are selfish and self centered: my guess is they are probably critical and demanding wherever they go!

If my child SCREAMED because there was no Mac & cheese...

1. We would leave.
2. Child would go to bed, no dinner.

I guess that I was the meanest Mom ever! One time my daughter grumbled about dinner, I picked up her plate, and threw it in the trash. Fine. Whatever.

And no one ever complained about their dinner ever again.
