To Hippy Chick - They arrested Farrell Cross for the murder of Tammy Jo last night! 19 years later but they finally get him.
ROLLA, Mo. -- Investigators believe a fight over child support payments caused a man from Rolla to kill his ex-wife in February 1991. Phelps County prosecutors charged Farrell Cross, 70, with first-degree murder on Wednesday
Tammy Cross's body was found near her vehicle in the Mark Twain National Forest along Three Mile Road north of Highway P and south of Newburg. She was shot in the head. A probable cause statement used as the basis of the charge shows the Crosses had one child together and had an "ongoing court battle regarding Farrell Cross's failure to pay child support. The victim reportedly received her first child support check just shortly before her death via garnishment of Farrell W. Cross's wages."
The detective who wrote the probable cause statement says Farrell Cross "regularly physically and verbally abused the victim both within after their marriage." The detective based that on interviews of other people and hospital records.
The detective also wrote that other people say Farrell Cross tried to get them to help him kill Tammy Cross "on separate occasions." One man says Farrell Cross offered to kill that man's ex-wife if that man would kill Tammy Cross. Another man says Farrell Cross gave another man, Robert Sharp, a "white powdery substance" that he said was poison, and paid that man to "get the victim to ingest the powder without her knowledge."
The detective wrote that witnesses say Tammy and Farrell Cross were together at a bar on the evening of Feb. 2, 1991, and Tammy offered to buy Farrell a beer with the child support payment that she'd just received. Witnesses told investigators that Farrell was angry about that comment. Other witnesses said they heard Tammy offer to meet Farrell some place else to have sex together.
A witness told the detective that he saw Sharp buy Tammy a beer and put the white powder in it, then hand the plastic bag containing the white powder back to Farrell. That witness said she confronted Farrell about the white powder and Farrell told her "she "did not see anything." Others heard Tammy say her beer didn't taste right, and they tasted it and agreed with her.
The detective believes Tammy left the bar first, and Farrell left later and met her on Three Mile Road. Witnesses said they say Farrell's van turn off Highway P onto Three Mile Road. Farrell denied that after Tammy's body was found; he said he went in the opposite direction to his home.
A witness, Delbert Smith, also told an investigator that "Sharp told him he informed Farrell Cross that he put the powder in the victim's drink before he left the drinking establishment (and) Farrell W. Cross later threatened to kill Smith and his children if he said anything about the death of the victim."
The detective wrote that others heard Farrell brag about killing Tammy "and getting away with murder" and admitted to another witness "that he shot his ex-wife because he owed her child support."
Farrell Cross is in the Phelps County Jail in lieu of a $250,000 bond.
