Tensions build in search for Nevaeh

Tensions are building between the family and authorities. Some family members claim they are not being kept up to speed on the investigation into Nevaeh's disappearance.

Searchers say they are frustrated by a lack of cooperation with the Monroe County Sheriff's Department.

"Oh that would be awesome if they would actually do something and tell us something, anything, anything an area to go to, directions. Like this green van I've heard so much about, they won't tell us a description of the van, so we would know what to look for, won't tell us nothin' about it," said Anthony Boyer who is searching for Nevaeh.

Authorities say they are not revealing everything they know for fear it may tip the wrong person off.

Meanwhile, some relatives of the missing girl are making an unthinkable accusation. Carla Elliotte, Nevaeh's paternal grandmother, has been accused of stealing donation money.

Elliotte, who had been camped out at the Charlotte Arms Apartment Complex since last Monday, has been a no-show at vigils and searches for the past three days. Family believes she has stolen donation money and skipped town.

Nevaeh case: Investigators look for possible witnesses at school playground

Sheriff Crutchfield held the daily 11 a.m. news conference on the search for missing 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan.

The latest details as of Tuesday morning June 2 are that the sheriff's department has received several tips about the green van they are looking for. They have not yet located the van or the person(s) driving it. They were looking for that minivan for questioning purposes only, believing the person(s) in the van may have witnessed something helpful to the case.

Sheriff Crutchfield is asking anyone who may have been at the Hollywood School Playground on Sunday, May 24 between 6 and 7 p.m. to please call investigators at (734) 243-7070.

The sheriff declined to name who is or is not still a person of interest. George Kennedy remains in jail on unrelated charges of violating parole. The sheriff also said they re still in contact with Jennifer Buchanan, Nevaeh's mother.

Police Hope Green Minivan Is Key

Police announced on Monday a green, box-styled minivan was seen in the area where 5-year-old Navaeh Buchanan was last seen Sunday around 8 p.m.

Nevaeh's great aunt said she saw the suspicious-looking van on Saturday evening.

"I wish I would have gone back and gotten the license plate number, but you never know," said Diana Lawson.

Investigators said they would also like to speak with the mother of two young children in a silver minivan who were at the playground at Hollywood Elementary school around the same time.

Over the weekend, investigators questioned two young boys as potential witnesses who told them about the green van.

Authorities are hoping to pinpoint occupants of two minivans parked at the Hollywood School who may have witnessed the disappearance of 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan nine days ago.

Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said a task force is looking for the driver of a silver minivan at the school, possibly a mother with her two small children, the evening of May 24.

Investigators also are looking for a person associated with a green box-style minivan that was parked at the school between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. the day Nevaeh went missing.

Police are now looking to question the occupants of a silver van in addition to a green van at a Monroe school in the continuing search for Nevaeh Buchanan.

Police are also hoping to question as witnesses a mother and two small children who were in a silver mini van at the school between 6 and 7 p.m. on that Sunday, which was May 24.

Investigators also questioned the driver of an ice cream truck that in the vicinity, but Sheriff Crutchfield declined to reveal any details of what was learned.

This morning&#8217;s briefing is last scheduled press conference until further notice. Police have holding 11 a.m. press conferences since Nevaeh disappeared. Sheriff said holding a final briefing is not an indication that the investigation has stalled.

The Monroe County Sheriff said Tuesday that his department will no longer hold daily briefings to inform the media of any developments in the case of missing 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan. Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield says no press conferences will be held until there is a substantial development in the case.

Authorities continue to solicit information from the public regarding the disappearance of the missing Monroe County girl.

Sheriff Crutchfield says authorities are now looking for a woman and two children seen in a silver minivan at a nearby elementary school on the night Nevaeh vanished. He says the woman and children are not suspects, but that they may have information useful to the investigation. The van was seen at the school, which is close to the Charlotte Arms Apartment Complex, sometime between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Sunday, May 24.

Nevaeh was last seen playing outside the apartment complex around 6:15 p.m.

Case could 'take weeks or ... years'

Assistant Special Agent Ed Hanko said there is no typical timeline to these types of cases.

"With things like this &#8230; it could take weeks or it could take years," Mr. Hanko said. "You just don&#8217;t know."
He added that the FBI is continuing to fully staff the task force. The Michigan State Police of the Monroe post and the Monroe Police Department also will continue to assist.

In the meantime, a small group of volunteers continues to search for Nevaeh. The sheriff said he appreciates the public&#8217;s efforts, but he has asked volunteers to not walk through areas where police also are searching. However, no official searches have been planned after investigators repeatedly went through the Charlotte Arms apartment complex, quarries and other areas in the county.

The sheriff added that a final scheduled press briefing is not an indication that the investigation has stalled.

The media updates had been held daily but will not be anymore.

Tuesday, more than ever, questions were dodged.

"I'm not commenting on who is and who isn't a person of interest... I'm not going to comment on any specifics on any interviews... I'm not commenting on lab results... I'm not commenting on any information we've derived from tips," said Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield.

"You have to realize we aren't telling you everything we know," Sheriff Crutchfield said Monday.

And they hope that Tuesday's silence means they know something especially important.

Social media find a role in case

A Wyandotte mother has created a Yahoo group on the Internet to keep the case of Nevaeh Buchanan, a missing 5-year-old girl in Monroe, in the spotlight.

Members of Yahoo groups post messages on a designated topic.
The goal of the Fight for Nevaeh group is to coordinate efforts for requesting news coverage of the missing girl in Monroe. The group started Sunday with a posting of the Amber Alert, and the members intend to pick a different regional or national media outlet every day to contact with information about Nevaeh. There are currently about 30 members.

Kathy Slack hosts the site. She doesn&#8217;t know the Buchanan family, but felt she had to do something to help the efforts.
"This is my something," Ms. Slack said. "I don&#8217;t know these people. I&#8217;m a mom."
Ms. Slack said she borrowed the idea from the Angels in the Media Yahoo group, which campaigns for media attention on behalf of awareness of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Her son, Nicholas, died in his sleep at age 7 weeks in November, 2007. Since then, she&#8217;s been involved in SIDS awareness efforts and has made friends on the Internet with other parents who have suffered a similar ordeal.

One of Ms. Slack&#8217;s posts on the Yahoo group is the text of her letter to Nancy Grace, who hosts a criminal justice show on HLN. The show had announcements last week and also did reports this week about Nevaeh Buchanan.

Also on Monday, the Monroe Unfiltered Web site set up a wiki-style page to help local residents sort through the details of the Nevaeh Buchanan case.

Ms. Slack doesn&#8217;t consider the social media hosts to be competing with each other. Instead, through these efforts, she said they are reaching out to as many people as possible.
"There&#8217;s power in numbers," Ms. Slack said. "Keep this kid&#8217;s name fresh and out there."

Authorities revealed Wednesday, according to ToledoOnTheMove.com, that tips have dwindled, just a day after Monroe County officials held a very non-revealing press conference.

Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield, speaking Tuesday at the daily press conference for missing Nevaeh Buchanan, said, "I'm not commenting on who is and who isn't a person of interest... But the question most continue to ask is: What possesses a mother of a small child to consort with known sex offenders? And not just known to authorities and to others, but to Jennifer Buchanan as well.

Former &#8216;person of interest&#8217; in missing-girl case wants an apology

MONROE &#8212; The 64-year-old grandfather who was questioned and then cleared in the disappearance of Nevaeh Buchanan told The Blade Tuesday he was wrongly targeted by police and forced to sleep on the floor in a jail cell.

James Easter said his only connection to the missing 5-year-old girl was a visit he made to the North McComb Street apartments where she went missing 10 days ago.

&#8220;Because I park where they found the scooter, they used that for the thing to say I must have been the one because the scooter was near where I parked,&#8221; he said.

Mr. Easter said he told investigators that he would take a polygraph test to answer any questions because if he refused, it would make him look guilty.

He also said that during the many hours of questioning authorities asked what he believed may have happened to the girl. He said he offered them a hypothetical scenario of how an abduction of a young girl could be carried out at the apartment complex by hiding behind large trees nearby.

Mr. Easter said he became upset after learning there were rumors circulating that he had confessed to abducting Nevaeh.

Last night on NG, the mother Jennifer apparently told Nevaeh's real father that the failed polygraph test was only from one question that they asked her: "Are you still involved with Kennedy" she replied No and failed. We don't know why Kennedy failed.

We can see where her concern lies here, she wants to protect him while her daughter is abducted and not found???? If ..this were me, which it would not be because I wouldn't date a man who likes children in that way but if it was me I wouldn't care about "my boyfriend" and the implications on him, my only concern would be my child and it really doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that he is a convicted child molester and that he will be questioned and be under the radar even if he didn't do it. I would want to eliminate him from the equation because uhhh it's my child!!!!!!

Kennedy: I Don't Know Where Nevaeh Is
Kennedy Speaks Out To Toledo Paper

Thirty-nine-year-old George Kennedy told The Blade of Toledo, Ohio, in an interview published Thursday he went to look for Nevaeh Buchanan after hearing from her mother she had gone missing.

He said after his friend Jennifer Buchanan told him her daughter was missing he drove with his girlfriend, Savannah Gray, to Nevaeh's preschool and continued to search other areas.

He told the paper that he met Nevaeh's mother two years ago at the parole office. He said he formed a friendship with her out of loneliness.

"I am 39 years old. I don't want to grow old by myself. I just want a companion and to be happy. If they got a kid, I don't have a problem with that and helping them raise kids. I ain't preying on women to be with their kids," he said.

"I was a father figure to that little girl," he said. "Because I am a sex offender it doesn't mean I have to bury myself under a rock. I have no regrets about knowing Nevaeh, her mother, or grandmother. I care about them a lot."

Search for Nevaeh; 'I didn't take her,' detained man says from jail cell

The father of a 12-year-old daughter and an 18-year-old son, Kennedy was freed in July, 2007, from prison, where he had served part of a two to 15-year sentence for the sexual assault of a teen girl in 1998.

"I didn't take her and I definitely didn't kill her," he said.

When asked if he knows or suspects who is responsible, he said: "I have no clue. I wish that I did have some clue. I am hoping that she ain't dead. I still got my fingers crossed that they are going to find her alive."

Kennedy said Buchanan and her mother, Sherry Buchanan, learned shortly after he met them that he was a registered sexual offender because they checked his offender status on a state Web site.

Kennedy said he was locked up in isolation for eight of the 11 days he has been jailed, and sheriff's deputies, police detectives, and FBI agents spent hours questioning him about his whereabouts when Nevaeh went missing and what he was doing before and after she vanished.

"They didn't want me talking to anybody. They had me locked down in a room for over a week," he said. "They wouldn't let me out for my own safety because everyone in the county wants to hurt me and crucify me."

He said he was cleared as a person of interest after authorities checked his alibis against witness statements, receipts, and video surveillance and came up with nothing.

He said he had used the car of his girlfriend's mother to take friends to the county inmate dormitory about 7:15 p.m. May 24 to visit their friend. He said he went to the motel and to a nearby gas station, where he believes he appeared on video. He went back to the dormitory and took his friends to their home.

Kennedy said there was blood in the motel room because he cut himself shaving and blood was left in the room after his girlfriend, Ms. Gray, bled after getting a tattoo. He said that he cut himself with the multiknife while fishing several days before Nevaeh vanished and may have left blood on it.

Mr. Cordell said Kennedy waived a hearing in jail on the recent parole violation for having contact with Nevaeh and her family and a recommendation was made to terminate his parole. If accepted, Kennedy could be sent to prison to serve the remainder of his original two to 15-year sentence.

Kennedy said he didn't want to fight the charges in court because "my parole officer has been trying to send me back to prison for years."

Monroe County Sheriff's Capt. Dan Motylinski said he could not confirm that Kennedy was no longer a person of interest in Nevaeh's disappearance.

Kennedy, who grew up in Haskins and Liberty Center, Ohio, southwest of Toledo,
was one month away from being released from parole.

West Toledo kids raise money to help in search for Nevaeh

Wednesday night, a group of kids from west Toledo stopped by News 11 to drop off a jar of money they raised to help with the search.

They've been following the search on the news and wanted to do something to help.

"Well, we went around the neighborhood and we got a lot of money for the Nevaeh cause, and we sold pop and water, because it was so important," said Jada Jacobi.

The kids raised about $100.
