I had pretty much assumed Mickey had lost her life when first her bike was found in Whiskey Bay, and I was heartbroken. Then when BSL was arrested and we began to learn more about him, I greatly feared that she had lost her life, and I was heartbroken. Then when it became likely that he had led LE to her body, and the body was found, I knew it was her, and I was heartbroken. And yet now, hearing it confirmed that the body found is indeed Mickey, I feel like I have been hit with a ton of bricks. Rest in peace, sweet Mickey. You will never again be hurt by anyone or anything.

Y'all know something? I feel like an idiot. It just occurred to me today WHY he told the JPSO all his identification was missing.

He didn't want them to see he was a RSO.

Why in the H*LL weren't all those peoples bells and whistles sounding when this guy shows up bloody as all get out, with such a flimsy story? Seriously, LE. Don't you have some sort of radio to call out on and do a "check"?

Oh, all the woulda', coulda', shoulda's in this case make me want to scream! This was a senseless, preventable act. An innocent girl is gone because people didn't use readily available resources. And, by people, I mean people that should have known. People that were trained to "know".

I am so angry right now.

JPSO and NOPD are so used to handling this kind of garbage that there are no red flags. How could they possibly know anything? Mickey had not been reported missing yet.

Well said. Confirmation brings us to the reality we pretty much know. It still hurts. Today my heart hurts. RIP Mickey. A life taken far too soon.

The Lafayette Police Department has just released the coroner's report that confirms the body found in Evangeline Parish Tuesday is that of Mickey Shunick. Here is the release from Corporal Paul Mouton.

UPDATE: Body Identity Revealed
Lafayette, LA – Investigators have identified the body discovered in Evangeline Parish as that of Michaela “Mickey” Shunick. There will be no further comment on the Shunick investigation at this time.

I find it a little odd that the LE specifically said in their statement about confirming it was her body that there would be no more statements at this time. I must admit I kind of expected a press conference or something.

I live in Opelousas, Louisiana and there is a casino here called Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino. I frequent a bar there to listen to band s play and hear the local DJ. When I saw his mugshot on tv I was chilled to the bone, because I would see him there quite often. As more details come out I become more creeped out, it's just scary, especially with my younger sister being Mickey's age. Rest in peace angel.

Ironic that EVERY news clip from KATC is proceeded by an ad for Evangeline Downs with their zydeco jingle "come feel the rush. come play with us. evangeline downs....."

I guess my thought here is this, and I beg to differ. The guy is telling you he was mugged, but doesn't know where, can't tell you where, has stab wounds all over his upper torso, says he's been lost for hours, but somehow ends up on the Belle Chasse Highway at a hospital when if he was, in fact, downtown, you know he's at least passed up Tulane, which is PLAINLY visible from the interstate, to somehow end up on the Westbank, and just happened to make a series of correct turns to get to a hospital, well, yeah, it's suspicous. But even so:

Had they have bothered to do a warrant check when they KNEW he was acting suspiciously, there WAS an active warrant for his arrest for domestic battery.

It's a warrant check. Not brain surgery. Just get the guy's name, DOB and SS* and call in a friggin' warrant check.

Even if the warrant hadn't shown up, they'd have known he was a RSO. That's all I'm saying.

rhapsdy, I would imagine that after the grueling 82 days that investigators have been through, that they need time to regain their composure to put their thoughts into words. I haven't walked in their shoes, but I would suspect that Mickey Schunick has become their child too..

Dental records identify Mickey Shunick's remains





According to Lafayette Parish Coroner Chief Medicolegal Investigator Keith Talamo, dental records received today and sent to LSU FACES Laboratory identified the body found in Evangeline Parish as that of Mickey Shunick.

LSU FACES Dir. Mary Manhein told the coroner's office she will complete her examination and determine cause and manner of death in about two weeks and a report will be sent to Lafayette Coroner Dr. Kenneth Odinet., said Talamo. At that point, Shunick's body will be sent to the Lafayette coroner and the coroner's office will turn it over to a funeral home.

The JPSO and NOPD probably could have done a bit better job, but I don't think it would have changed the outcome. I'm more concerned that the officer BSL checked in with for being a sexual offender - who made notes of his recent scars AND knew he drove a white truck -- didn't put 2 + 2 together.

Agree. At this point I'm sure there is nothing left to say. I do fear what we will come to know down the road :maddening: At least he is off the Streets.

There is no way to make sense of this senseless tragedy. Now we strangers can all grieve with Mickey's loved ones --her gentleness, her humor, her radiant youth--it is good to be sad about these losses. This music is in memory of her.

LEO's are people like us, working their jobs day to day. When a case like Mickey's reaches a sad conclusion, they're left with the same sunken feeling many of us are experiencing right now. Cut them some slack. There will be time to talk tomorrow.
