According to concurring sources, this indictment concerns the sexual touching of a little girl who was four years old at the time of the incident. Abusing his goddaughter, the daughter of a close friend. The video was taken in 2017 before the one where he was seen with hs 6-year-old cousin. (NL admitted in particular that he had "for some time" been attracted to children & had pedophilic tendencies. "I didn't really make the difference between a woman and a child," he told the investigating judges).

What to remember from the third day of the trial

For the third day of the trial, the hearing, which was initially scheduled to open at 9am, started a little late. With symptoms that might correspond to Covid-19, Nordahl Lelandais had to undergo a PCR test this Wednesday morning at the courthouse in Grenoble. A test that finally proved negative.

For the third consecutive day, acquaintances of the accused were called to the stand this Wednesday morning. An ex-girlfriend and a former friend of Lelandais were also called.

The latter told an anecdote that occurred several years before the events for which the former dog handler is on trial: One day while fishing after going down into the gorge, the two men had found human bones: "He told me, 'if one day we want to get rid of a body, we throw it away here and no one will find it'.

These were the last two witnesses heard regarding the personality of the accused.

13:10: Awaiting Nordahl Lelandais' first statements

After the hearing of the last two witnesses concerning the personality of Nordahl Lelandais this Wednesday morning, it is the turn of the accused to face the court. This afternoon, the former dog handler is to be questioned for the first time on the facts for which he appears before the Assize Court of Isère.

Will the man who has been claiming for three years that he killed Maëlys "accidentally" provide new elements?

15h21: Lelandais and his drug use

- The president: "The impact of your consumption since adolescence on your health and your psyche? You were treated for anxiety attacks over a short period of time.

- Lelandais: "The anxiety attacks I had were when I was working in a tunnel one day, I had a sudden dizzy spell when I got out. [...] For me, cannabis is a hard drug. It can cause symptoms in people who are not good at all.

15h28: Anxiety attacks long to treat and an obligation of care after a crime under alcohol

- Lelandais: "The anxiety attacks took a long time to treat. Once I had agoraphobia. I could no longer leave my house.

- The president: "You had an obligation to care for yourself and to work. Can you explain?

- Lelandais: "It was after my conviction for the restaurant fire (in 2009). My friend and I had said that we had committed this offence under the influence of alcohol. So we were told to get treatment for that. But honestly I didn't have an addiction, we had just been fools.

15:40: Nordahl Lelandais and the failure of his dog training company

- The president: "You were self-employed dog trainer. How long did it last?

- Lelandais: "I don't know, madame.

President: "From February to October 2010. Why didn't it work?

- Lelandais: "Only training, it didn't make a salary. Advertising was too expensive. One should have done breeding on the side.

- The president: "It was a failure?

- Lelandais: "Yes, but not at the level of the army.

15h44 :

- The president: "The end of probation report at the end of 2012 was very worrying 'in debt, fragile psychological state, someone desperate'".

- Lelandais: "It sums up a big period of my life (after a long silence), I tried to do things, it's all my fault eh. I was often a failure".

15:49: "I don't mind that I'm not an angel... but hurting animals, no".

- The president: "Your passion for dogs was passed on to you by your uncle (in the military)?

- Lelandais: "Yes, probably, I liked to go to his place, he had a kennel after the army".

His uncle had very harsh words for him when he was interviewed, saying that Nordahl Lelandais had shot his dogs and pigeons with a BB gun.

- Lelandais: "I don't mind that I'm not an angel... but to hurt animals, no".

15:53: Lelandais says he was "pressured" in the army

- The president: "In 2001, you sign a contract in the army. You go to Suippes. And you will do two Opex (external operations) in Guyana".

- Lelandais: "Yes, that's right.

- The president: "On your service record, your section chief says that you were full of energy. He says that Guyana was a simple surveillance mission and that they did not have enough confidence in you for a more sensitive mission like Kosovo.

- Lelandais: "Yes, but that was after the incident with the dart (which he received in the eye)".

The president read out very mixed assessments from his superiors, which got worse as time went on. "There were good evaluations at the beginning and then a loss of confidence after the cannabis episode in Guyana," explained the accused.

- Lelandais: "I was pressured. I was told that what happens in the army stays in the army.

- The president: "Yes, but you filed a complaint! and your superior was convicted (for the dart in the eye). In the end you were recognised as a victim.

16:03: "Today I know that, I am stupid".

- The president: "You were then discharged P4. You told several people that you had been in OPEX in which you did not participate. You said you were a legionnaire. Why?"

- Lelandais: "I worked a lot with the legionnaires. It's an elite corps so I put myself forward.

- The president: "You told stories about traumatic situations. Why?"

- Lelandais: "To boast... and maybe to make myself feel sorry for myself I don't know [...] I preferred to say that I was working in an elite regiment rather than say that I had been caught with pot. Now I know, I'm stupid.

16:07: "Who I am, I don't really know... I know who I don't want to be anymore."

- The president: "What was true in your life?

- Lelandais: "I'm not merely a liar, many things were true. I tried to work. I had extraordinary girlfriends, friends, a family that loved me.

- The president: "But who are you, Mr Lelandais?

- Lelandais: "It's complicated to say like that... Who I am, I don't really know. Today I am Mr Lelandais Nordahl in a courtroom and I have to explain myself on very serious facts. I know who I don't want to be anymore.

- The president: "You have three mentions on your criminal record. What can you tell us about the damage and the theft in 2009?

- Lelandais: "I'm not going to go back over the facts, I've been tried. I am as guilty as the two who were with me.

- The president: "Then a second conviction under the CRPC (Appearance on Prior Recognition of Guilt) in 2017, for public use of a regulatory badge (he had brandished a police armband during a dispute with a motorist).

8:30am: The summary of Wednesday's hearing

The defendant was heard for the first time by the court. He expressed a willingness to change, to try to be "better every day", but his hearing also revealed that he had not completely rid himself of his addictions. In detention, he was able to get a phone and look at pornographic sites with teenage categories.

9.10am: The hearing resumes

9.15am: Lelandais' lawyers add new documents to the file

The defence lawyers have added new documents to the file following a statement on Wednesday by Maître Rajon, lawyer for Maëlys' mother, who claimed that Lelandais had written to a high school girl while in prison. "Nowhere is it written that she is a minor, nor that she is a high school student. She is 20 years old", argue Lelandais' lawyers, criticising the " courtroom effect " of Me Rajon.

9:21am: The director of the gendarmerie investigation on the stand

The chief adjudant at the research section of Grenoble will testify in court. He is 48 years old and led the investigation from August 2017 to January 2021. "The investigation was long despite a suspect quickly identified," he begins.

He goes back to the night of the events: "The gendarmes had recovered the photos and videos of the wedding and had conducted the hearings. All the sex offenders listed in the area, about twenty, had also been heard. The investigators, aided by tracking dogs, quickly ruled out the hypothesis that Maëlys had left on foot. "She was seen one last time at dessert time by her mother," said the chief warrant officer. He reports that 192 people were heard and 5 potential suspects, including a great uncle known for acts against minors, a man who has just left prison and Nordahl Lelandais. "Our attention was quickly drawn to Mr Lelandais.

The latter is seen with Maëlys by several witnesses and, after the disappearance, he has a strange behavior: he leaves the premises at the beginning of the search, citing a malaise, and he washes his car the next day. His phones were temporarily cut off during the night of the events, making geolocation impossible. He was heard twice by the investigators, who noticed scratches the next day. Lelandais justifies himself by evoking a gardening activity but the indications are numerous and he is placed in custody on 31 August.

9.45am: "Cocaine taken during the evening"

" He would have taken cocaine in the course of the evening," the investigator relates. "He confirms that he showed the photos of his dogs to Maëlys. He was released and placed under surveillance, but investigators discovered Maëlys' DNA in his car and traces of ethanol. He was charged and imprisoned. Lelandais replied that the girl had come with a small blond boy to check that there were no dogs in the car.

The investigators look at the surveillance videos which show Lelandais cleaning his car "for 1 hour and 44 minutes", focusing on "the trunk and the front passenger seat". They are also looking at cameras from the town of Pont-de-Beauvoisin, which show three round trips and one outbound trip. "We'll see a driver in dark clothes and a short passenger in light-coloured clothes," says the investigating officer.

The investigator continues: "Early on Saturday morning, he consults pornographic sites with keywords referring to images of young women, even younger ones. The same on Saturday afternoon with a keyword used by English paedophiles. On Sundays, he goes to English and Portuguese *advertiser censored* sites."

10:07: In February, the discovery of a drop of blood from Maëlys is a breakthrough

"Lelandais will request to see the investigating magistrates," says the investigator, "and he leads them to the body of the girl. He indicates an area on the heights of Attignat-Oncin, a tracking dog guides the investigators. Bones were found, as well as her clothes and several strands of her hair.

Nordahl Lelandais' version of events is changing. He says he hit Maëlys, who was crying in his car. The experts reveal fractures of the jaw and cthe bones of the nose. "The clothes may also have been cut with a sharp object," according to the investigator. "The body is decomposed, we have not been able to obtain any further information on what really happened."

The chief deputy returns to the chronology of the night: the investigation estimates that Lelandais and Maëlys leave the wedding at 2:45 am and that the blows are made after 2:49 am. Lelandais remained absent from the wedding for 40 minutes. At 4.10am, he retrieves the body from where he left it, near the railway line, and arrives in the communal forest at 4.56am. He deleted 139 files from his phone. Lelandais "appeared to be cautious" according to the director of the investigation.

10.25am: Phone analysis reveals child *advertiser censored*

The investigators analyze the phone of Lelandais. They find a photo of child *advertiser censored*, listed as such by Interpol, photo montages of pornographic nature and videos of child *advertiser censored* made by Lelandais to the detriment of his little cousins. These are "the same kind of videos that he made with other female partners", namely close-up caresses of the sex. The events took place a few weeks before the murder of Maëlys.

10:40am: An "extremely complicated" investigation

The chief warrant officer describes the investigation into the death of Maëlys as "extremely complicated". "For several weeks, we do not know if this girl is still alive, with a suspect who denies," he continued, also mentioning "a considerable media stir."

Photos of the location will be projected in the courtroom after the recess. The session will resume at 11:05.

11.20am: The hearing resumes, photos of the venue are projected

Images of the wedding scene are shown in front of the court, followed by the headlights of a car near the railway. But it cannot be identified as Lelandais' Audi. "It is in accordance with his statements" that it is identified as such, the investigator says.

The court encountered a technical problem and the broadcasting of the images was interrupted. A technician had to intervene during the lunch break. In the meantime, the president opened the floor for questions.

11:45: Lelandais a serial killer? "I have no comment to make", replies the investigator

An assessor asks the director of the investigation if other leads have been explored and suggest that Nordahl Lelandais is a serial killer. "I have no comment to make", replied the investigator. He confirms that investigations has been initiated in this direction, but not by the investigative section of Grenoble.

An associate of Boguet, the lawyer of Maëlys' father, asks the investigator about the similarities between the murder of the girl and that of Arthur Noyer. "The car already. On the facts as such, on the one hand we have an attack on a girl, on the other on an adult. There are perhaps similarities in the time slots, but on the one hand we have acts committed in a closed environment and on the other in an open environment.

The gendarme mentions another point, that of the telephone correspondence before the act. In the Maëlys case, Lelandais tried to contact his girlfriend at 1:38am, by sending her a text message. In the Noyer case, he asked one of his partners for sex but she rejected him.

12:37pm: "We had this hope of finding her alive," says the investigator

"We had this hope, perhaps naive, to find Maëlys alive," continues the adjutant. The public prosecutor asked him if Nordahl Lelandais had helped the gendarmes in their investigation. "I don't think so... At first, no. Then he was forced to do so by the evidence of the drop of blood in the trunk," replied the investigator. We would have made an effort to solve the case but we would probably not have been able to find the body," he added.

Mr Jakubovicz asks the investigator: "Isn't it classic for a suspect to deny the facts in police custody? The adjutant: "Everyone can express their emotions in different ways. Like many people in police custody, he denied it. The only difference is that he has this ability to respond in a matter of seconds.

The defence lawyer continued and wanted to show the fragility of human testimony: he returned to the numerous testimonies that attested to the presence of the girl beyond 2h45 when she had already been abducted. He also insists on the fact that Nordahl Lelandais' vehicle was visible to the guests.

13:15: "Nothing allows us to affirm or deny" that he is a serial killer

Mr Jakubovicz returned to the question of consulting child *advertiser censored* sites by addressing the investigator: "You cited on his internet research that he had gone to a site, Lil Candy, stating that it was a term used by Anglo-Saxon paedophiles. Do you know who Lil Candy is? She's a major pornographic actress and I'm providing the documents (in the file). The investigator's response: "I am not saying that Mr Lelandais consulted child *advertiser censored* sites. I say that he consulted pornographic sites with keywords such as 'teenager', 'petite girl', 'hot teen' and 'Lil candy'.

Mr Jakubowicz did not let go: "Why did you specify that the site was Portuguese (on the sites consulted the day after the tragedy)? The interested party's reply: "It has information value.

"I would like to return to the question of the assessor on Nordahl Lelandais serial killer," resumed the lawyer. "There is nothing to confirm or deny that he is a serial killer," replies the adjutant. Jakubowicz's anger is overwhelming and the session is suspended.

3.05pm: The proceedings resume, the hearing of the investigator continues

Images from the surveillance cameras of the car wash are shown: Lelandais can be seen cleaning his vehicle from top to bottom. The former dog handler is cleaning the left side of the boot "excessively". This is where Maëlys' blood drop was found.

15:20: Nordahl Lelandais admits to having wanted to "erase the traces" of Maëlys in his car

The president asks Lelandais: "Do you recognize that this cleaning was only intended to remove traces of Maëlys? Lelandais replied: "Yes, Madam President. It was to erase the traces. During the investigation, he had repeated several times that he had cleaned his car because he was planning to sell it.

Later on, Lelandais' entire journey is retraced. The images show successively the village hall, the place where he parked next to the railway, the path he took to go and lay Maëlys' body... A video shows the slow motion passage of Lelandais' car on the night of the murder, in the town of Pont-de-Beauvoisin. A white silhouette can be seen on the passenger side, close to the window. These are the last images of Maëlys alive. Her grandmother leaves the courtroom in tears, followed by the father and sister.

The president asked Lelandais if it was really him in the images. "Yes, Madam President. During the investigation, when he had first seen these images, the accused had said that it was neither him nor his car. "Why did you deny it in the first place," the president asked. "Because I didn't assume it", replied the accused.

The president continued: "What did you say to Maëlys at that time? Lelandais: "I do not remember well. We talked about dogs, that she liked cars. It was she who got into the front seat by herself. The girl will cry in the few minutes following their departure from the village hall. "Is that where she was hit?", asked president Valérie Blain. "Yes, ma'am.

16:16: The lawyers for the civil parties question the investigator

Me Rajon, the lawyer of Maëlys' mother, asks the director of the investigation: "When your services were able to zoom in on this frail figure, was your conviction strengthened? "Of course," replied the sergeant. Mr Rajon: "So in October/November, your opinion was made? The sergeant: "An investigation is not an opinion. It is the totality of objective elements."

16:21: A new witness on the stand, a 57-year-old gendarme

The man on the stand is a criminal identification technician from the Grenoble unit. He has participated in the field research from the day after the events.

He recalls the odorological samples that were taken from Lelandais' car. The three dogs that were dispatched became ill because of the cleaning products. "The first cold shower", says the technician. The seizure of his vehicle and its sending to the criminal research institute of the national gendarmerie (IRCGN) will highlight the DNA profile of the girl on the button of the car's headlights. Of the dozens of samples taken, only one showed the mixed profiles of Lelandais and Maëlys. "That car had really been well cleaned," the technician adds.


17:10: "The body of the child was in a fetal position

The gendarmerie technician describes the scene where Maëlys' body was found. "She was in a foetal position, in a hole under large stones." Clothes and locks of hair were found in the following days. "We immediately saw that the mandible was fractured," the gendarme continued, as Maëlys' mother left the room. "We found her dress in several pieces, the lower part separated from the upper part. The back part of the panties was missing.

Boguet, the lawyer for the civil parties, questioned the technician about the extreme search. "It was not possible that despite all the force he had used to clean his car, he had not left any traces", he replied.

18:10: Maëlys gets into Nordahl Lelandais' car on 27 August 2017 at 2:46

A criminal research analyst gendarme testifies to the chronology of events at the wedding: "The episode where Maëlys looks at the dogs on Lelandais' phone is at the time of the dessert. It was shortly after 1:30am. Then "a witness saw her playing with a ball around 2:26". "Around 2:40, Maëlys said goodbye to her grandparents. Around 2:45, a couple saw her near the buffet, near the kitchen exit". And finally: "2:46am, Maëlys left in Lelandais' car.

18:25: Nordahl Lelandais tried to erase clues

Still according to investigators, on Sunday, Nordahl Lelandais deleted dozens of photos and videos from his smartphone that had been taken between June and August 2017, including the night of the wedding.

18:45: A last expert interviewed

The man was working at the time at the Institute of Criminal Research of the Gendarmerie Nationale (IRCGN), he expertly examined all the phones, SIM cards and computer of Nordahl Lelandais. It was he who noted the search for "decomposition of a human body", on 25 April 2017, decisive in the case of Corporal Noyer.

Feb. 2, 2022: Wednesday, Trial Day 4: Lelandais did a PCR test this Wednesday, February 2. The former soldier had some symptoms. Everything could have been messed up since the former soldier was tested against Covid-19 after feeling”some symptoms“, as reported by Cyril Moenne, Chief of Staff to the Attorney General. So, in order to take no risks, a source from the courthouse explained that Lelandais was subjected to “a self-test, then an antigen test“. Both were negative & the hearing was able to resume fairly quickly, with only half an hour late.
Lelandais was questioned for the first time on the facts for which he appears before the Assize Court of Isère.

9.11 am: The hearing resumes

9:20am: a first witness heard

On the stand, a 24-year-old woman who had known Nordahl Lelandais in 2012, when he was a dog trainer and she was only 15 years old. "He had kissed and hugged me. I said I wasn't interested and he stopped," she explains.

9.30am: "He was seductive

"He was seductive, offering little attentions," said the young witness, who had come to have her dog trained. "I let him kiss me, but then I said I wasn't interested," she explains. "I may have pulled back and he said 'don't worry', he didn't try again.

9.45am: "Maybe I was lucky", admits the witness

"At the time it was my dream to become a soldier and dog handler," continues the young witness, who then saw Nordahl Lelandais as a "hero of the nation".

"How do you see him today?" the president asked. "That perhaps I was lucky. My mother may have been thoughtless in leaving me with a man we didn't know. The proof is that he ended up kissing me when I was alone with him in the forest."

10:15: Nordahl Lelandais' lawyer intervenes

Alain Jakubowicz, lawyer for Nordahl Lelandais, in turn questions the young witness: "We'll get straight to the point. Do you know why you are here?

"Probably to bring elements to the court," she replies. "Perhaps to provide evidence that he might have paedophile tendencies," continues Mr Jakubowicz, who insists that she was much older than her 15 years, according to her entourage.

"The result of all this. We have been talking for an hour about a non-event. You were not assaulted at the time," the lawyer continued. "Yes, that's right," she confirmed.

10:29: Nordahl Lelandais' ex-girlfriend on the stand

Today aged 29, the one who was the girlfriend of Nordahl Lelandais in 2017, at the time of the death of Maëlys, recalls her relationship with the accused. "I had met him because I was looking for a dog trainer," she testifies, like the previous witness. She describes him as caring and humorous at first. "From March onwards it became complicated... Until his arrest in fact," she explains.

She became pregnant in March 2017 and had to have an abortion because he did not want a child. "I didn't agree with that. It broke everything. He had also been unfaithful.

10:45: "I feel like I don't know him

His ex-girlfriend recounts her doubts about Nordahl Lelandais at the time. At his home, she had found a post-it note with the address of a *advertiser censored* site, which could lead to child *advertiser censored*. "I took a photo of the post-it because Nordahl always needs proof otherwise he admits nothing.

"How would you describe your ex-partner?" the president asked her. "I've known a good part of him. And another where he is impulsive, manipulative, a liar (...) I feel like I don't know him."

10:57: "He was not in his normal state... I was afraid"

The ex-girlfriend of Nordahl Lelandais describes a scene, after her abortion, where he had taken her to the woods around Domessin. "He was not in his normal state... I was afraid. I don't know what his intention was", she testifies. "There was no violence but he had a dark look in his eyes. He was driving very fast, I asked him to turn around."

Questioned by the president, she admits that her relationship with Nordahl Lelandais continued despite his doubts and then his incarceration: "Yes, we called each other. I had asked for a visit permit. It stopped when he confessed that he had killed the girl.

11:25: an audio recording revealed

The court broadcasts a telephone recording of a conversation between Nordahl Lelandais, then incarcerated, and his ex-girlfriend, who has just testified. "You don't doubt me, do you? It's a sick thing. It is important that they find the girl," he said. "I'd like to hear you say that you love me, that you miss me, that it makes me feel better. I'm accused of something crazy."

The witness was very moved, according to reporters from the Dauphiné Libéré who were present in the courtroom.

11:30am: "I still love you very much today," Lelandais says

Nordahl Lelandais speaks to his ex-girlfriend: "I am sorry that you are still suffering this", then "to this day I still love you very much."

He says he sent her a text message while he was at the wedding party before Maëlys' abduction, and that she had not responded.

"You say that if she had responded to this SMS it would have changed everything?" the president asks. "Well yes, I would have gone to see my girlfriend, to sleep at her place. I would have left the wedding.

Maître Rajon: "Regarding the exchanges after Maëlys' disappearance, there was a telephone exchange where you asked him what he had done that weekend?

The witness: "Yes, he told me that he had not done anything in particular.

Mr. Rajon: "What do you think of that today, looking back?"

The witness: "It's scary. Not to assume, not to say what happened, it's frightening.

Me Rajon emphasised that the witness should not feel guilty about the lack of response to Lelandais' text message on the night of the wedding. "This is very clear in the minds of my clients."

12:18: "In 4 years a lot of traumatic things have happened, I have forgotten a lot of things"

Me Remond: "Your text message exchanges on the night of 10 to 11 July 2017? "(the night he assaulted one of his little cousins)

The witness: "I have no memory. In four years a lot of traumatic things have happened, I have forgotten a lot of things."

Mr. Remond: "Did you mention the fact that you knew his cousins?"

The witness: "We had seen each other during a meal at his house.

The parents of one of the little cousins of Nordahl Lelandais will now testify. The mother, aged 37, begins.

"I am here today to get answers to my questions. Is this the first time he has done this. Are there other children?"

Nordahl Lelandais was the godfather of one of her girls.

"We chose him as godfather as he was very, very close to my husband, his cousin. We had complete confidence in him. It went very well. His goddaughter only had eyes for him. He looked after her... We told her the facts three weeks ago (on the verge of tears), at the time she was too small (she is 8 years old now). She cried a lot, she doesn't understand. She said she still loves him and would like to see him one last time. We told her it was not possible."

Lelandais is no longer the girl's godfather, the parents have taken steps. "She has chosen a new godfather."

14:57: "One morning he told me that he had to accompany her to the toilet to pee. Now thinking about it, I understand, it was for an alibi just in case."

The president: "In 2017 he comes to visit how many times?"

The witness: "Twice. Once in April for Easter, he had stayed for two days."

The president: "No particular memories about him?"

The witness: "No he was as usual, he was having a laugh with my husband."

The president: "And the other stay in July?"

The witness: "He came on a Friday, around the 6th. He was a bit more upset, things weren't going well with his girlfriend, he was often on the phone. He was afraid that she had not had an abortion. We put an air mattress in her room for the first night. The next day, my other daughter's room was free.

Lelandais' stay was prolonged because he had to change a flat tyre on his car.

The witness: "One morning he told me that he had to accompany her to the toilet to pee. Now that I think about it, I understand, it was for an alibi just in case."

15:03: "When I knew the facts about Maëlys, I saw the face of my child."

The president: "You were aware of the facts about Maëlys de Araujo from a distance. What did you think?"

The witness: "For me it was impossible, it couldn't have been him. When I found out, I saw the face of my child.

The president: "What was your vision of him before these facts?"

The witness: "Nordahl was a person who liked to party, with a smile. A good person, with values."

The president: "His faults?"

The witness: "Work, he didn't like to work. It was contradictory with his desire to get ahead in life. He was narcissistic too but we took him as he was."

15h10: "For me he was a straightforward person."

The president: "How many of his companions did you know?"

The witness: "I knew three.

The president: "What can you say about his relationships and his break-ups?"

The witness: "It was mainly him who talked to us about it, for him the problem was them. We laughed and said to him, 'Stop your websites, come to the south. Don't bother with your complicated relationships.

The president: "His addictions?"

The witness: "In the evening like everyone else, he drank. As far as drugs were concerned, he lectured my husband because he smoked cannabis, for me he was an honest person. And anything to do with cocaine, I didn't know about."

15:16: "Getting Maëlys into his car was not to go and see the dogs, not after what happened to our children."

The president: "How did you find out about the video on your daughter?"

The witness: "The gendarmes called me on my mobile. They told me that there was a second video (the first one, concerning the other little cousin victim, had already been found). We went to look at it to identify it. We were asked a lot of questions. We just looked at the photos, we refused to see the video. We recognised the "Snow Queen" clothes. She underwent a gynaecological examination (sobbing), she looked at me and didn't understand.

She was led to believe that at a certain age you have to have an examination. For four years we became experts in lying to protect our child. Because she was so young, she quickly forgot all about it, we told her that her godfather had gone abroad.

The president: "Until the trial approached?

The witness: "It was publicised in the media, so she shouldn't have to find out about it like that. I wait for him to tell the truth. And also to the de Araujo parents. Getting Maëlys into his car was not to go and see the dogs, not after what happened to our children."

15:41: "Many people have worries and they don't kill an adult or rape little girls."

Me Remond: "When he came in April, he told you 'I have something to tell you'?"

The witness: "He said that to my husband. Later, I knew that in a letter he said that day he wanted to tell us what he had done to Arthur Noyer.

Me Remond: "Do you still have family relations with the Lelandais family?"

The witness: "Not since he confessed about little Maëlys.

Me Remond: "What feelings do you have towards him?"

The witness: "He manipulated us well, one does not become a murderer and a rapist in a short time. I feel disgust and anger. Many people have worries and they don't kill an adult or rape little girls."

He had a breakdown.

"On December 23, 2019, I was committed to a psychiatric hospital, I was using cannabis and cocaine. I wanted to hurt myself. When you take cocaine, you want to hurt yourself, not others. I managed to get out of it. I have the support of my wife, my family."

During Lelandais' stay at his home in July, they had been using cocaine together in a disco.

9.20am: "I'm here to find out what happened, why? At the time, I had been with my partner for seven years. I had met this person (Nordahl Lelandais) a few times during family reunions. I thought he was a completely normal person.

The events occurred in August 2017 during a holiday in Savoie at the Lelandais' home.

9.22am: "We didn't see him during the day, 3/4 of the time he was sleeping. We saw him in the evening for drinks".

9.28am: "Things were going normally with my daughters, he seemed attentive. There was nothing strange that could arouse our suspicions. The few things I perceived about him at the time was that he was a nice person, a good cousin (his wife's cousin). Super tidy, self-confident".

Witness: "No, he is perfectly relaxed, as usual."

Maleys' DNA found in his car.
*Charged (July 3, 2017) & indicted (Feb. 27, 2020) with sexual assault of a minor under 15 yrs re sexual assault on his young cousin (14) during a visit for her father’s funeral, a month before Maëlys’ abduction; she was 6 years old at the time.
*Indicted (Dec. 7, 2018) for sexual assault on a minor & recording of child *advertiser censored* images. According to concurring sources, this indictment concerns the sexual touching of a little girl who was 5 years old at the time of the incident. Abusing his goddaughter, the daughter of a close friend. The video was taken in 2017 before the one where he was seen with hs 6-year-old cousin. (NL admitted in particular that he had "for some time" been attracted to children & had pedophilic tendencies. "I didn't really make the difference between a woman and a child," he told the investigating judges).
