It just does not make sense that the "Religion of Peace", i.e., Islam, produces such a hatred and fervor to kill those who are not following Islam.
Why does this belief disintegrate into violent behavior and not some other belief systems.
There are some who say this is not true Islam, and that the true doctrine is peaceful.
Yet it's increasingly difficult to separate the peaceful branch of this religion from those who follow it to the letter, or 'by the book' --- and create mayhem.

I am wondering if those who commit crimes under the veil of Islam are not true followers at all ; as in, do they NOT pray and do they NOT follow any muslim doctrines ?
That would make more sense ; kind of like people who claim to be christians and then gun down abortion providers. :(

ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISM IS WIDELY SPREAD AMONGST EUROPE'S MUSLIMS

WZB study shows significantly high numbers amongst Europe’s Muslims.

The WZB Berlin Social Science Center conducts basic research with a focus on problems of modern societies in a globalized world. The research is theory-based, problem-oriented, often long-term and mostly based on international comparisons.

http://www.wzb.eu/en/press-release/islamic-fundamentalism-is-widely-spread

Religious fundamentalism is not a marginal phenomenon in Western Europe. This conclusion is drawn in a study published by Ruud Koopmans from the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. The author analyzed data from a representative survey among immigrants and natives in six European countries. Two thirds of the Muslims interviewed say that religious rules are more important to them than the laws of the country in which they live. Three quarters of the respondents hold the opinion that there is only one legitimate interpretation of the Koran.

These numbers are significantly higher than those from local Christians. Only 13 percent of this group put religious rules above national law; just under 20 percent refuse to accept differing interpretations of the Bible. For Ruud Koopmans, this powerful tendency toward Muslim religious fundamentalism is alarming:

Is the only one acceptable interpretation of the koran the peaceful one, that urges acceptance of fellow people, regardless of their beliefs ? I don't own a copy of the koran and have never read it before.

The meaning of 'Islam' is 'submission' and not 'religion of the peace' as is often claimed. Acceptance is not on the agenda.

It used to be that outside the islamic world, muslims had to abide by the law of the land.
This has changed in recent decades, and it is getting worse. Money from the oil states (Saudi Arabia, emirates) is behind this.
The attack on Charlie Hebdo, the gruesome murders, take place in an environment where more and more muslims put their religious laws above state laws and try impose these laws on everyone.

The 'peaceful' part is lobbying. Islamists almost had their way with the European Commission, they want to extend their freedom of religion to the point of forbidding anything, including cartoons, that might offend them. It was a crying shame that they even got that far.

Here's a recent example, one of many. This one happens to be from Afghanistan:
http://www.reuters.com/article/2015...oman-idUSKBN0MG1Z620150320?utm_source=twitter

An Afghan cleric and a police official on Friday defended the lynching of a woman in central Kabul after a mob was filmed stamping on the woman and smashing a brick on her head after she was accused of burning a Koran, Islam's holy book.
The woman's body was set on fire and thrown onto the banks of Kabul's main river on Thursday.
It was unclear whether she had actually burned a Koran, but during Friday prayers at a mosque in a smart area of Kabul, a cleric's sermon broadcast by loudspeaker told devotees that the crowd had a right to defend their Muslim beliefs at all costs.

The role of the state is dubious:
President Ashraf Ghani's office said the killing would be investigated by both the Ministry of Interior and a committee of religious scholars.
"No individual is allowed to make oneself a judge and use violence to punish others," Ghani's statement said.

WHY ISLAM NEEDS A REFORMATION (1)

To defeat the extremists for good, Muslims must reject those aspects of their tradition that prompt some believers to resort to oppression and holy war

Ayaan Hirsi Ali on islam, violence, reformation and peace
http://www.wsj.com/articles/a-reformation-for-islam-1426859626

“Islam’s borders are bloody,” wrote the late political scientist Samuel Huntington in 1996, “and so are its innards.” Nearly 20 years later, Huntington looks more right than ever before. According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies, at least 70% of all the fatalities in armed conflicts around the world last year were in wars involving Muslims. In 2013, there were nearly 12,000 terrorist attacks world-wide. The lion’s share were in Muslim-majority countries, and many of the others were carried out by Muslims. By far the most numerous victims of Muslim violence—including executions and lynchings not captured in these statistics—are Muslims themselves.

Not all of this violence is explicitly motivated by religion, but a great deal of it is. I believe that it is foolish to insist, as Western leaders habitually do, that the violent acts committed in the name of Islam can somehow be divorced from the religion itself. For more than a decade, my message has been simple: Islam is not a religion of peace.

When I assert this, I do not mean that Islamic belief makes all Muslims violent. This is manifestly not the case: There are many millions of peaceful Muslims in the world. What I do say is that the call to violence and the justification for it are explicitly stated in the sacred texts of Islam. Moreover, this theologically sanctioned violence is there to be activated by any number of offenses, including but not limited to apostasy, adultery, blasphemy and even something as vague as threats to family honor or to the honor of Islam itself.

It is not just al Qaeda and Islamic State that show the violent face of Islamic faith and practice. It is Pakistan, where any statement critical of the Prophet or Islam is labeled as blasphemy and punishable by death. It is Saudi Arabia, where churches and synagogues are outlawed and where beheadings are a legitimate form of punishment. It is Iran, where stoning is an acceptable punishment and homosexuals are hanged for their “crime.”

WHY ISLAM NEEDS A REFORMATION (2)

Based on the way in which Mohammed spread his faith, Ayaan Hirsi Ali distinguishes three groups of Muslims:
http://www.wsj.com/articles/a-reformation-for-islam-1426859626

Who owns the Shahada [islamic declaration of faith]? Is it those Muslims who want to emphasize Muhammad’s years in Mecca or those who are inspired by his conquests after Medina? On this basis, I believe that we can distinguish three different groups of Muslims.

The first group is the most problematic. These are the fundamentalists who, when they say the Shahada, mean: “We must live by the strict letter of our creed.” They envision a regime based on Shariah, Islamic religious law. They argue for an Islam largely or completely unchanged from its original seventh-century version. What is more, they take it as a requirement of their faith that they impose it on everyone else.

I shall call them Medina Muslims, in that they see the forcible imposition of Shariah as their religious duty. They aim not just to obey Muhammad’s teaching but also to emulate his warlike conduct after his move to Medina. Even if they do not themselves engage in violence, they do not hesitate to condone it.

It is Medina Muslims who call Jews and Christians “pigs and monkeys.” It is Medina Muslims who prescribe death for the crime of apostasy, death by stoning for adultery and hanging for homosexuality. It is Medina Muslims who put women in burqas and beat them if they leave their homes alone or if they are improperly veiled.

(...)

The second group—and the clear majority throughout the Muslim world—consists of Muslims who are loyal to the core creed and worship devoutly but are not inclined to practice violence. I call them Mecca Muslims. Like devout Christians or Jews who attend religious services every day and abide by religious rules in what they eat and wear, Mecca Muslims focus on religious observance. I was born in Somalia and raised as a Mecca Muslim. So were the majority of Muslims from Casablanca to Jakarta.

Yet the Mecca Muslims have a problem: Their religious beliefs exist in an uneasy tension with modernity—the complex of economic, cultural and political innovations that not only reshaped the Western world but also dramatically transformed the developing world as the West exported it. The rational, secular and individualistic values of modernity are fundamentally corrosive of traditional societies, especially hierarchies based on gender, age and inherited status.

Trapped between two worlds of belief and experience, these Muslims are engaged in a daily struggle to adhere to Islam in the context of a society that challenges their values and beliefs at every turn. Many are able to resolve this tension only by withdrawing into self-enclosed (and increasingly self-governing) enclaves. This is called cocooning, a practice whereby Muslim immigrants attempt to wall off outside influences, permitting only an Islamic education for their children and disengaging from the wider non-Muslim community.

(...)

It is with this third group—only a few of whom have left Islam altogether—that I would now identify myself.

These are the Muslim dissidents.
A few of us have been forced by experience to conclude that we could not continue to be believers; yet we remain deeply engaged in the debate about Islam’s future. The majority of dissidents are reforming believers—among them clerics who have come to realize that their religion must change if its followers are not to be condemned to an interminable cycle of political violence.

(...)

The Medina Muslims pose a threat not just to non-Muslims. They also undermine the position of those Mecca Muslims attempting to lead a quiet life in their cultural cocoons throughout the Western world. But those under the greatest threat are the dissidents and reformers within Islam, who face ostracism and rejection, who must brave all manner of insults, who must deal with the death threats—or face death itself.

WHY ISLAM NEEDS A REFORMATION (3)

Ayaan Hirsi Ali proposes five areas that require amendment:
http://www.wsj.com/articles/a-reformation-for-islam-1426859626

1. Muhammad’s semi-divine status, along with the literalist reading of the Quran.
Muhammad should not be seen as infallible, let alone as a source of divine writ. He should be seen as a historical figure who united the Arab tribes in a premodern context that cannot be replicated in the 21st century. And although Islam maintains that the Quran is the literal word of Allah, it is, in historical reality, a book that was shaped by human hands. Large parts of the Quran simply reflect the tribal values of the 7th-century Arabian context from which it emerged. The Quran’s eternal spiritual values must be separated from the cultural accidents of the place and time of its birth.

2. The supremacy of life after death.
The appeal of martyrdom will fade only when Muslims assign a greater value to the rewards of this life than to those promised in the hereafter.

3. Shariah, the vast body of religious legislation.
Muslims should learn to put the dynamic, evolving laws made by human beings above those aspects of Shariah that are violent, intolerant or anachronistic.

4. The right of individual Muslims to enforce Islamic law.
There is no room in the modern world for religious police, vigilantes and politically empowered clerics.

5. The imperative to wage jihad, or holy war.
Islam must become a true religion of peace, which means rejecting the imposition of religion by the sword.

Hirsi Ali is right. Unfortunately, people have been hanged, shot, decapitated, stoned or thrown from a tower for much less than this.

She writes: I know that this argument will make many Muslims uncomfortable. Some are bound to be offended by my proposed amendments. Others will contend that I am not qualified to discuss these complex issues of theology and law. I am also afraid—genuinely afraid—that it will make a few Muslims even more eager to silence me.

SWEDEN'S FOREIGN MINISTER DESTINED TO BE THE NEXT 'CHARLIE'?

Sweden's Foreign Minister Reviled as an Enemy of the Prophet

Gatestone Institute
by Ingrid Carlqvist and Lars Hedegaard
http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/5423/sweden-saudi-arabia-wallstrom

Evidently, Sweden's Foreign Minister was unaware that that by criticizing Islamic sharia customs, such as flogging a blogger a thousand times and the ill-treatment of women, she was, in fact, seen as turning against Islam itself.

There appears to be a genuine but concerning lack of knowledge in the Swedish government about Islam and Islamic affairs.

"It makes no difference what she says. In Islam, it is for Muslims to determine whether or not one has criticized their religion." — Johannes J.G. Jansen, author and historian of Islam.

From a Muslim perspective, any criticism or infringement of sharia law and Muslims' obligation to wage jihad [war in the service of Islam] is a violation of their freedom of religion.
In other words, it is incumbent on Muslims to "terrify" non-Muslims (referring to the Koran 8:60). But when they succeed, Muslim spokesmen accuse their frightened victims of suffering from "Islamophobia," and demand that Western authorities denounce and persecute people beset by the psychiatric malady.

There is nothing, however, to indicate that Margot Wallström and other members of the Swedish government have been driven by fear. They have no knowledge of what orthodox Islam is about, and evidently believe that the religion is benevolent and peaceful, but unfortunately hijacked or misinterpreted by evil men.

(...)

The Swedish government's ignorance was amply demonstrated when Gatestone called Margot Wallström's press spokesman, Erik Boman.
Gatestone asked if he was aware that practices such as the death penalty for blasphemy, flogging and barring women from driving a car are based on the Koran. He said he was not. Nor, he said, had he heard of the 1990 Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam, which states that all human rights must be based solely on sharia law, and rejects human rights as expressed in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

UPDATE ON LASSANA BATHILY, HERO OF HYPER CASHER

Lassana Bathily: The Muslim who saved French Jews

David Suissa, Jewish Journal
http://www.jewishjournal.com/cover_...nch_jews_in_hyper_cacher#.VSg2fEP1wTg.twitter

He’s now on disability leave from the market, visiting with doctors to overcome the trauma of his experience. He said he misses the camaraderie of his beloved grocery store, which reopened with all new employees two months after the attack. The memories are too intense, he said, for him or any of his former colleagues to return to that same place.

As Bathily spoke, I heard party noises in the background. I thought about his newfound celebrity, and I hoped it wouldn’t go to his head and that people wouldn’t try to exploit him. I asked him whether he’d ever thought about working for an organization that promotes peace and coexistence among different religions.

His voice rose up against the background noises: “If you hear of such an organization,” he said to me in French, “please tell them I’m interested.”

"PARIS—An Islamic extremist with an arsenal of loaded guns was only prevented from opening fire on Sunday morning churchgoers because he accidentally shot himself, French officials said.

The 24-year-old computer science student, who was also suspected in the death of a young woman whose body was found on Sunday just ahead of his arrest, had been flagged as a risk last year and earlier this year but there was no specific reason to open a judicial investigation, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Wednesday.

A French security official, who was not authorized to publicly release details, said the suspect — an Algerian who had lived in France for several years — was arrested in Paris Sunday after he apparently shot himself by accident and called for an ambulance. He was waiting outside for first aid when police arrived at the scene. They discovered a blood trail leading to his car, which contained loaded guns and notes about potential targets".

More from the article:

Charlie Hebdo’s editor-in-chief Gerard Biard accepted the award that has bitterly divided the literary community, saying that the magazine’s shocking and sometimes offensive content helps combat extremists who would limit free speech. “Fear is the most powerful weapon they have,” he said. “Being here tonight we contribute to disarming them.”

PEN president Andrew Solomon, who had earlier qualified to the Guardian that “it’s a courage award, not a content award,” delivered a full-throated defense of the prize. “Few people are willing to put themselves in peril to ensure that we are all free what we believe,” Solomon said. “Tonights’s award reflects [Charlie Hebdo’s] refusal to accept the curtailment of speech through violence.”

“We defend free speech above its content,” Solomon said. “Muteness is more toxic than speech. Silence equals death.”

Claude Hermant does not necessarily know the final destination of the weapons, an investigator said, reporting "porosity between certain Islamist and criminal circles".

FRANCE REMEMBERS TERROR VICTIMS ONE YEAR ON WITH MUTED CEREMONY

CYZMseYUQAAne1Q.jpg

Paris (AFP) - A year after a million and a half people thronged Paris in solidarity with the victims of the attack on satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, the traumatised city marked the anniversary of the killings with a sombre ceremony.

Around 2,000 people submitted to strict security checks to get into the Place de la Republique for the event, many saying they were determined to attend despite a lingering sense of fear after France was repeatedly targeted by jihadists in 2015.

"A year ago, lots of posters read 'Not Even Scared', but no, in fact we are scared," said Gabriel Taran, 52. "But we have to be here, and continue to go to sidewalk cafes, to concerts -- to learn to live with it, not give up anything."

Twelve people were killed in the January 7, 2015, assault on Charlie Hebdo, which had been in the jihadists' sights since publishing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in 2006.

The next day, another extremist, Amedy Coulibaly, shot dead a policewoman and went on to kill four people at a Jewish supermarket.

Sunday's event was also dedicated to the victims of the November 13 jihadist rampage across Paris targeting ordinary people enjoying a night out, which left 130 dead.

CHARLIE HEBDO ATTACK: THREE ARRESTS

Le Parisien
http://www.leparisien.fr/faits-dive...ons-21-11-2017-7405611.php#xtor=AD-1481423554

Three men suspected of having participated in the logistics of the January 2015 attacks on Charlie Hebdo and the Hyper Cacher were arrested Monday and Tuesday in the provinces.

Three men were arrested on Monday and this Tuesday morning as part of the investigation into the attacks on Charlie Hebdo's editorial staff and the Hyper Cacher supermarket in January 2015 in Paris. These arrests were carried out in the provinces, targeting men between the ages of 25 and 45 who allegedly acted as intermediaries in the supply of arms to terrorists. These suspects were previously known to the police only for common law offences.

These arrests, which target the logistics of the attacks, are probably the last in the investigation file that is about to be closed after almost three years of investigation.
