Steve Maia Caniço was last seen in the early hours of Saturday and friends say he went missing when police intervened and fired tear gas and rubber bullets as they tried to bring an end to a night of techno music. There was no barrier along the river and a number of revellers fell in, before they were rescued by firefighters.

Friends have told French media outlets that he could not swim, while witnesses have described seeing a man struggling on the surface of the water.

The body found in the Loire this Monday is "probably" that of Steve Maia Caniço, according to the family lawyer interviewed by BFMTV.

The body was recovered in the afternoon at the Ferrand wharf, not far from Wilson wharf, the site of Steve Maia Caniço's disappearance during the Fête de la musique at the end of June. DIRECT. Mort de Steve Maia Caniço : "Le problème n'est pas l'organisation de l’événement" mais "l'intervention de la police", selon l'avocate des participants

French PM Edouard Philippe gave a press conference on Tuesday, July 30, after the identification in Nantes of the body of Steve Maia Caniço. "I have decided to refer the matter to the Inspectorate General of Administration (IGA) to investigate further and understand the conditions under which the event was organised," the Prime Minister said.

Steve Maia Caniço disappeared on the night of June 21 after a controversial police intervention during the Fête de la musique. "I would like to remind you that it's been 20 years since it's been organized there, that we've never had such incidents before," said Marianne Rostan states. She is the lawyer who handles the case of the group complaint of 89 participants of this techno evening. "The problem is not the organization of the event. It is the intervention of the police."

Steve Maia Caniço's body was found in the Loire, in Nantes, on Monday. He was identified during an autopsy on Tuesday morning, according to information from France 3. The body was "in a state of advanced decomposition," according to the Nantes prosecutor, Pierre Sennès.

The public prosecutor of Nantes, Pierre Sennès, announced the opening of a judicial investigation against X for "manslaughter". "All investigations for identification purposes will be carried out as part of this judicial investigation," he said in a statement.

The opposition is calling for a parliamentary commission of inquiry. The deputy of La France Insoumise, Eric Coquerel reiterated this request on Tuesday. "The IGPN will not resolve the issue (...) It is not up to the police to investigate the police," he explained on BFMTV.

Riot police blast protesters with water canon and tear gas as violence erupts in French city Nantes | Daily Mail Online

Rioting broke out in the French city of Nantes today as thousands protested following the death of a young music fan who had been tear gassed by police before drowning in a canal.

The discovery of 24-year-old Steve Maia Canico’s body at the bottom of the waterway last week led to Prime Minister Edouard Philippe ordering a ‘full enquiry’ into allegations of brutality.

Mr Canico was among dozens of young men and women forced into the water at a Music Festival rave in the western city of Nantes on June 21.

President Emmanuel Macron’s government has been severely criticised in recent months following scenes of chaos involving its security forces.

Much of the violence has been related to the so-called ‘Gilets Jaunes’ or Yellow Vests protest movement, which has been involved in regularly rioting in major cities including Paris.

Teargas is classed as a chemical weapon, and is actually banned from warzones, in line with international agreements.

In Britain its use is heavily restricted, and it is never used indiscriminately against crowds containing men, women and children, as happens in France.
