From this article, it appears the subpoena is not for the purpose of implicating West, but another 'local woman' with a [local] daughter who says her mother "didn't even know the mom":

Now his attorney, Kevin Gough, claims someone else may have plotted to have the baby killed and used Elkins as the trigger man.

Action News isn't releasing the woman's name because she hasn't been charged with a crime.

"I know she hasn't been involved in anything. I just know that."

Action News spoke with her daughter who didn't want to show her face on camera.

"She had nothing to do with it. She didn't even know the mother."

Definitely confusing, though.

Yeah, I get ya, tlcya. "Following the subpoena refusal" I took to mean 'after the incident'.

But it's quite ambiguous.

It's minor in the scheme of things, maybe, but I'm thinking that the 'police report' the public defender's office was trying to file might not have been about West's (or Santiago's) failure to answer the door and receive the subpoenas (I'm sure as a lawyer he probably knows that's not illegal)--but to report what they allegedly heard West yell on the phone inside her apartment to Santiago:

Admittedly, its up for interpretation. That's just the impression I got from reading this article, since I've never heard of anyone filing a police report for evading supoena. It's just not something 'reportable'.

Boy is Gough stretching it!

First off, the investigator says Santiago is talking with a woman on his phone who is speaking loudly. Then the investigator goes to West's home and hears her speaking loudly while supposedly on the phone.

Did the investigator actually see West on the phone. She could have been talking to someone standing next to her or she could have been just talking to herself. She could have been talking with her daughter or even a friend on the phone.

Also, how does the investigator know who was talking to Santiago? She did not clarify that voice was West. Santiago could have been talking with a friend or relative.
A lot of women speak loudly.

Gough is fully aware neither Santiago or West have enough money to hire private attorneys. Is he trying to take advantage of this?

I wish an attorney from Georgia (anywhere in Georgia) would step in and help these two people. IMO they are being victimized by the newspaper publishing this nonsense.

Even if this is true, it doesnt help DE any. But why would he be telling all this to the media instead of to the detectives or DA in private? If he really had information to implicate someone for hiring a "hit man", I would think he would bargain and trade that information for some sort of plea deal.

And the bolded part is why this whole thing is so confusing to me, frankly.

But a four-page motion we obtained from the Glynn County Courthouse says otherwise.

Court documents filed by the public defender requests the immediate disclosure of all evidence that suggests she "may have been involved in a murder-for-hire plot or insurance fraud in connection with the death of Antonio Santiago."

They are referring to DO, aunt to DL in this article.

Like I said, Gough appears to be launching a very rigorous defense and from all possible angles simultaneously.

I finally got around to reading the motion. I think its mostly junk. He will get disclosure from the DA, but not immediately. The judge will allow the police to conduct their investigation. What Gough is wanting to do is force the police to investigate HIS theory of the case. He has his own investigators to do that. Furthermore, including the criminal history of the witness serves no purpose other than to publically discredit her. If DE was involved in a murder for hire plot, then he would already know who these people are. In my opinion, this motion is for the media/public's eyes, not really the court's.

I have my iPad turned up as loud as possible and I can't hear them, so will you all please fill me in on what was said. Thank you.

I agree with DL's attorney. Based on some of the lengths we've seen DE's family go to in order to cover for him, and the suspicion that both teens are involved with gangs, DL's safety if on the streets would be at serious risk, from gang associates, associates of DE, or even just royally pizzed off citizens.

Wise on her part to advise that.

Who was the black lady on the front row saying something about she had been trying to talk with police and they had not talked with her yet? I was wondering if it was DL's mother or his attorney. I couldn't hear very well at all and didn't hear her state her name.

Anybody know my answer?

Florida Times Union report on Town Hall Meeting (more at link)

Poverty, chronic unemployment and an unacceptable tolerance of violence are chief among the causes, Emmi Doucette said.

“All of the children of the city need to be healthy and safe,” she said. “We need to break the cycle of poverty.”

St. Simons resident Tory Braden disagreed.
She blamed social promotion in schools and coddling of some classes of people for the crime rate.

“These children are learning that they don’t have to do anything to get ahead,” she said. “These people get a lot of free stuff, but they’re not appreciating it.”

More on Town Hall
Many neighbors suggested the county add more officers, while others said the departments should consider consolidating resources. While most department leaders addressed that as a possibility in the future, Doering said the community will need to step up in the meantime.

"Every citizen has a moral duty to get involved. If you know something and you're afraid because you're worried about you, then therein lies the problem."

In this article law enforcement acknowledges gangs.

Brunswick Police Chief Tobe Green said the Task Force has worked diligently to prevent violent crimes from happening.
“We’ve identified over 120 known gang members,” he said without specifically linking either Elkins or Lang to a gang. “There have been 107 arrests made by the Violent Crimes Task Force and we’ve seized firearms ranging from a .22 pistol to an AK-47.”

BUT...in the article where the Mayor speaks he says:

When asked about a gang problem, the mayor said there are loosely organized groups of young men, but there's no gang problem.

BUT MOST IMPORTANT:

Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering said the crime was preventable.
“There are people in the community — adults — that had information that could’ve stopped the crime,” Doering said, “but they consciously made a decision not to come forward.”

I wonder who knew about this and would that make this premeditated murder????

wow. what a twist. if true, this spins a lot of different angles.
if "people in the community" had info that could have stopped it, this surely wasn't random. you would think if this is true there would be more arrested and charged w/ conspiracy.
so many questions.
