When I first read about this case on the 18th, I thought for sure this was going to go unsolved due to the victims being so well liked and the fact that it seemed random. Upon learning that the suspect’s Brother harassed the former couple that lived there, I was blown away. It’s not very common that two people will have the same delusion but on occasion if those two people are very close, which I’m assuming the brothers were, they can share the same delusions. This is called shared psychotic disorder. I’ve only ever heard of it in a few other cases. This is so sad and heartbreaking!

But why would they harass the neighbours?
What a strange and tragic case!

The family lived there for 2 months so they surely knew the killer, no?

I don’t have a clue about why they would harass the neighbors. In my opinion, maybe it had less to do with the people and more to do with the house. I’m thinking they had shared delusions. MOO.

Maybe they had plans for this house as it was just around the fence?

Right I got that, I said - "a couple crazy brothers". I'm interested in learning about their parents, had they sought help for these two? Was this behavior drug induced? It would make sense they have "partnered" in some sense. He killed the folks who lived in the home his brother previously targeted.

I wonder if it was some sort of redemption for his brother. Like he had gone so crazy with grief that he wanted to do this in his brother's honor. And that is why he murdered the wrong people because he was not the one doing the stocking and didn't know what the people looked like.

But why would they harass the neighbours?

Because they are/were both severely mentally ill. There is no other reason required- some people with mental illness can quite literally decide that a random tree is plotting against them and decide to burn it down for that reason. I once worked with a guy who got it in his head that the restaurant's coffee pot was plotting against him. Mental illness is just that random, sadly.

I guess he stuck to drinking tea then.

While mis-directed retaliation may somewhat explain the Hicks family murders, I'm still curious about the break-ins he committed the same night/day... I suppose those were just random per the 2nd report.

UPDATE: Acworth murders could have been misdirected retaliation, says family member

Per the report linked below... "Lanz had no connection to the neighborhood where the burglary took place and did not know the homeowners, police said."

Matthew Lanz: Atlanta-area man accused of killing a couple in their home and stabbing a police officer - CNN

So... copy cat and/or mental illness (or a combo)?

This clicks the "PizzaGate" logic for me. I suspect that these brothers shared delusions that terrible things were happening right under their noses, behind closed doors, and were concealed by government conspiracy.

Unfortunately, previous occupants moving away and being replaced by a government agent, even just a firefighter (delusional people make little distinction) could have been seen as evidence to support his belief that there was something nefarious hidden in the house. This is a pretty common category of delusion for people to have and there's a lot of "support" to be found online for it.

I'm still puzzled as to why he opted to break into the other homes 30 miles away in Sandy Springs. I haven't seen any recent news, and I suppose that since the GBI are involved it may take even longer for info to be released (if at all).

How many of these conspiracy theorists are there, and how to they get that way?
