Investigator to re-open 22-year-old murder case
by: Rachel Stockman Updated: May 9, 2013 - 7:43 PM

[...]

Deborah Jean McKneely disappeared from her home in 1991, sometime after her two young children left for school.

Investigators found traces of her blood inside her home and in a carport. There was also evidence of forced entry to the home. Her children discovered her missing, and reported to authorities. Investigators recovered her SUV in Decatur, which also contained her blood.

The cold case will be re-opened after the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office swore in a new cold case investigator. He will be looking into 11 cold cases, and focusing next on McKneely's disappearance.

"(We want) to see if there is something that crime labs can now do with DNA that wasn't available 17 or 21 years ago," cold case investigator Ronnie Godwin explained.

Police and Deborah's brother feel sure it was a case of domestic violence. She was to sign divorce papers the day she disappeared, and is believed to be deceased.

McKneely disappeared from 3736 Union Church Road, Rockdale County, GA on January 29, 1991, sometime between 7:30 am and 4:45 pm, the times when her children left for and returned from school.
The back door of the residence was kicked open and a windowpane in the door from the garage was broken. Blood was found in the house and carport. Nothing was taken from the home. A white pickup truck was seen in the area during this period.

Her automobile, a 1985 tan and black Chevrolet, S-10 Blazer was found the next day in DeKalb County behind Decatur High School. Blood was found in the vehicle. The keys were left in the vehicle and cash was placed in plain view in what investigators believe was an effort to "bait" the vehicle for potential car thieves.

Investigators believe that at least two people were involved in the abduction.

She was living with her two sons and had been separated from her husband since November 1989. She and her husband were scheduled to finalize their divorce and disposition of property at 5 p.m. the day she disappeared.

Oh my gosh thank you so much Bessie and DQN for starting this thread for me in hopes that Deborah's case is someday solved :)

May there be justice for Deborah.

I've submitted this Doe for Deborah before, but since Deborah doesn't have DNA processed yet there's no telling if it is a match.

FYI this Jane Doe was found across the street from my school growing up in the eventual neighborhood all my friends would end up living in. The area the Jane Doe was found is also where the highschool teens went as a lover's lane back in the 1970's before the land was developed and this Doe was discovered.

I buy that theory. I think Donald McKneely had everything to do with the disappearance of Deborah. He apparently had a girlfriend while in the midst of the divorce.

Johnson began dating Don McNeely, who was in the process of getting a divorce. Deborah McNeely, Don McNeely's estranged wife, disappeared under suspicious circumstances, and the police suspected that Don McNeely had murdered her. Captain Rhoades of the Rockdale County Sheriff's Department, who was investigating Deborah McNeely's disappearance, approached Darrell Pittard, President and CEO of the bank, about questioning Johnson. They used the bank's offices to question Johnson about a stolen tractor found on her property and her knowledge of Deborah McNeely's disappearance. After the questioning, officers arrested Johnson for theft by receiving stolen property. The magistrate dismissed the charge at the preliminary hearing the next day.

I was just thinking of Debbie the other day. I am tempted to send in my match ONCE AGAIN. Maybe to diff authorities like Rockdale police (not sure if I sent the info to them as well and not solely GBI). They seem to have handled the case in the beginning and the GBI may not be as interested as Rockdale PD with regard to investigating and closing it.

Please do. You'd be surprised how often tips end up sitting in a dusty file on a desk in someone's busy office. It's been a few years so lots could have changed since then. Good luck! MOO

I’m being reminded now just how difficult it can be to reach Rockdale county pd. Have used several different portals to contact them - some successful but most not. We will see what happens.

Details of Disappearance

Deborah was last seen at the residence she shared with her two children on in the 3700 block of Union Church Road in Rockdale County, Georgia on January 29, 1991. She was apparently abducted from her home between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:45 p.m.

Deborah's eleven- and thirteen-year-old sons were at school during that time and she disappeared by the time the children returned in the late afternoon. They called 911 when they saw the condition of the house.

The back door of Deborah's residence had been kicked open, a window pane in the garage was broken, and the phone lines were cut. Blood was discovered inside the home and in the carport area. There was no indication of robbery.

Deborah's tan and black 1985 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer was discovered on January 30, 1991, the day after her disappearance. The vehicle had been parked at a housing project on Jackson Way in Decatur, Dekalb County, Georgia.

The keys were inside the car and $100 in cash was scattered in plain sight on the front seat. Investigators believe this tactic was utilized to trick potential car thieves into stealing the vehicle. Blood was found inside it.

Authorities believe that two people were involved in Deborah's presumed abduction. An unidentified white pickup truck had been spotted in the area of her home prior to her disappearance, but it is not known if the truck is connected to her case.

Deborah and her husband, Donald McKneely, were going through a bitter divorce. They had been separated since November 1989. On November 14, 1989, Deborah filed a police report stating Donald had beaten her with a board. She told her brother and a neighbor that if she tried to divorce Donald, she believed he would kill her.

Deborah and Donald's divorce was scheduled to be finalized at 5:00 p.m. on the day of Deborah's abduction, but it hasn't been proven that the divorce had any bearing on her disappearance. Donald has always maintained that he had nothing to do with her kidnapping.

In 2001, Deborah was declared legally dead. Her case remains open and unsolved, and is classified as a homicide.

It is the typical case of the husband hurt for being trash and thrown out of the house... the wife was happy like that without him and logically he couldn't stand it... in addition to keeping material things and maybe the house... It is obvious that he did not do it but paid for other people to do it for him because he was so cowardly and insecure... a good woman left and left those children who, thank God, were older and not babies... .
either way
rest in peace
