Family seeks answers after Johnson County man goes missing | 13wmaz.com

Johnson County law enforcement is looking for help finding a missing man, 60-year-old Don Hightower.

[...]

"Saturday, he spent the day with us, and he was leaving his sister's house. He was supposed to come straight home and call her," KH said.

[...]

"He doesn't have a cell phone, he don't have any credit cards or debit cards -- he's old school. His car is a 2003 model, so he doesn't have a letter on his car, so we can't track him by that either," KH said.

He says Don had not been feeling well recently, with what he called "brain fog."

"He's been to the doctor about it. He seemed to be having a good day on Saturday, but he's been spacey a little bit. A little bit tired and sluggish," KH said.

Don is not taking any medications and was scheduled for a follow-up appointment this week.

"... He had enough cash on him to fill up a few times and get something to eat. ..." KH said.

Don Hightower was last seen in his gold 2003 Toyota Camry with a Johnson County tag number "AKE 9780."

If you have any information on the case, you can call the Johnson County Sheriff's Office at 478-864-3941.

On Saturday, October 30th, Don Hightower spent part of the day with his family watching the Georgia vs. Florida college football game.

By the end of the day, no one knew where he was.

[...]

He was watching the football game at his son's house. Afterwards, he went to his sisters.

At his sisters house, he said that he started feeling tired. Then he left to go home.

He only lives a mile down the road and she asked that he call her when he makes it home.

That never happened.

[...]

Several sheriff's offices and the GBI have been involved in the search. Authorities used helicopters and searched nearly every road in Johnson County.

[...]

"At this point, we have absolutely no clue of where to start," said Don's brother, DH. "If you see the car, the gold Toyota 2003. It's missing a couple hubcaps so you see the black wheels. It's fairly distinctive. Call the police. Call your local police and say, 'There was a BOLO on this car and I believe I just saw it.'"

[...]

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office and surrounding counties are asking for people to call in with information.

His son, Kenny Hightower, said he and his father had spent Saturday with Don’s sisterwho lives nearby, WMAZ reported. Don headed home later that night and was supposed to call his sister when he got there, but never did.

“He doesn’t have a cell phone, he don’t have any credit cards or debit cards — he’s old school,” Kenny told the news station. “His car is a 2003 model, so he doesn’t have a letter on his car, so we can’t track him by that either.”

Police said he has a medical condition that causes confusion and makes it hard to communicate.

“He was in the car when he left,” his brother David Hightower said. “It’s a 2003 Toyota Camry, and it’s missing a hubcap.”

[...]

Once the game was over, Don said he was going a mile down the road to his house. He said he wanted to turn in for the night and that he would call his sister once he was settled at home.

“He went to leave, wasn’t feeling very well, said ‘I’ll call you when I get to the house’,” David recalled. “Three minutes later, he was gone and they’ve been looking for him ever since.”

[...]

The family is having trouble collecting clues, because Don normally paid in cash and did not carry a cell phone. David believes his brother may have had a stroke and could be experiencing a mental fog.

It might help to know the specific address (or block) where Don was last seen, and the specific address (or block) of the house to which he intending to travel.

Identify the top 5 or 6 most likely routes and turns that Don might’ve taken when leaving his sisters. I would drive each one of those routes very carefully - looking for the Camry crashed in pine trees or scrub. Work out from there

The greater danger to me is if Don had some kind of mental emergency and experienced a heart attack or stroke which may have resulted in him losing control of the vehicle and perhaps having an accident in a farm pond (same with a quarry for that matter). That’s where I’d check first. jmo

I listened to the video of his son's interview. It sounds to me like he's saying, “His car is a 2003 model, so he [don't have none of that] on his car, so we can’t track him by that either.” IMO whoever transcribed the vid misunderstood him. MOO

Sorry. I included the wrong link. Here's a link to the article with video embedded. His son talks about the car at the 1 minute mark.

So he went to the dr the day before he went missing. Would the dr share with investigators/family what information was gleaned from the visit? "Brain fog" for 1 week leading up to disappearance sounds like a medical issue. Seems clear he had some medical event combined with a car crash, likely down a ravine or in water. If he was confused at the time he may have gotten lost on the way home and crashed somewhere not along his usual route.

Johnson County investigators keep up search for man missing since October

March 28, 2022
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office wants to know if you have information in the case of a man who's been missing since October.

Sheriff Greg Rowland states 60-year-old Donald Allan Hightower was reported missing on October 30, 2021.

After family watched a football game together, a family member dropped Hightower off at his home in Scott.

Later that day, Hightower left Scott in his 2003 Toyota Camry. The car was last known to have both of its back hubcaps missing. It has a Georgia tag of AKE9780.

Now months into the search, Sheriff Rowland states that Hightower and his vehicle are still missing, but the search for both continues.

He says law enforcement has used aviation units, drones, sonar boats, dive teams, search dogs, and cadaver dogs -- covering air, underwater, and land searches.
