I’ve been asking myself what would make them take in a tree branch three days later. Did something come back on an autopsy? Seems like it is probably significant but I can’t Think of how it might fit in. The park is public and the tree was exposed to the elements for three days. Why did they realize at that time they needed to take in the tree branch.

Also under investigation is the shooting death of a woman at Yellow River Park in Gwinnett County.

Police have identified the victim as 18-year-old Tori Lang of Lithonia. Her body was found around dawn Wednesday. Police said that someone in the park discovered the body underneath a tree during a morning walk and called 911.

In a statement Thursday, Gwinnett County police say that as investigators sought to identify the woman, Lang’s relatives saw information about the case and pictures of Lang’s tattoos on social media and notified law enforcement.

Police said the motive is still unknown, and no arrests have been made.

So I'll say that I've never been to the park that late, but from what I understand, it's never totally empty. Certainly less crowded, but if you were looking for a victim, it wouldn't be unusual to find one there. It would probably actually be the perfect balance of knowing someone would be there, but also knowing it wouldn't be so crowded that there would be witnesses.

Concerning whether she was specifically targeted, again it's certainly possible, but I'm leaning toward no. The primary reason is because of the details I know, which again in the spirit of not spreading disinformation, I won't go into until they're confirmed. But they aren't consistent with a rage killing, where you hate someone so much you just want to beat the hell out of them without much thought on how you do it. This has (again, based on the possibly untrue details I've been told) more the marks of a Jack the Ripper type crime.... very precise and surgical, not just blind uncontrolled rage. Like it was more about doing something specific to a body, regardless of whose body it was.

What is still odd to me that I'd be curious to get thoughts on is where the murder took place. If you don't want to get caught, there are a million places in the park that make more sense... dark corners near the edge of the woods, etc.. But he chose the entrance, one of the most well lit and risky places to do something like this. Right across the street from a neighborhood, very little tree cover, and one of the more well lit areas.

Even stranger, I observed a camera less than 50 yards from where the body was left. It appears to be pointing almost directly at the spot. Apparently the cameras weren't working that night, but even if that's true, would the killer have known that? So we have a very specific attack planned in a very specific area, which makes me draw 2 potential conclusions:

1.) He didn't do enough research to know a camera was there, meaning this wasn't very well planned
2.) He did know the cameras were there and intentionally picked a place that was highly visible, maybe to show off what he was doing. As if that was part of the point.
Hi neighbor and welcome to WS.
I appreciate your posts and insight. You’ve said many things about the park in the area I wanted to and you said them better than I could have.
I can’t decide if I think :
1/the killer was so crazy they did not care if they were on camera or even think about that. Or
2/ The killer did know about the camera and that they were not working or how to stay out of their range.
This is why I asked if anyone knows what kind of killer kills with knife and commits post Mortem acts. I think it might help me make up my mind about whether she ran into the wrong person at the wrong time or was targeted.
I wonder if the FBI was called in because there were some sort of signature that has been seen in another crime in another state. But there are many reasons that FBI could’ve been called in.
I am heartbroken over this and really really want to know from investigators if they think others are in danger and if there is anything to be on the look out for. Are dog walkers in particular danger. Are lesbians in particular danger?

If the killer somehow knew Katherine:
What kind of jobs require knives and maybe give a person an excuse to carry a case of knives while walking to and from work.
Could an acquaintance someone she knew but did not know well lure her a few yards off the sidewalk?

Replying to myself because I also wanted to add that the killer likely is comfortable keeping late hours. If it was an organized killer. If it was a drugged out super crazy person late hours probably is not relevant.

I think Katherine may not have entered the park on her walk. She could’ve been on the sidewalk and lured to the park or pulled into the park maybe? She was killed so close to the sidewalk that it is possible she was lured a few yards in.

I've wondered about this too. If I had to make a guess (and to be clear, it's purely a guess), it would be that she walked down 10th street, did in fact enter the park at that entrance, and was likely attacked by surprise as she entered. I say this because from what I've gathered, she would frequently walk the dog in the park, so I don't think she intended to just walk beside the park (if she'd intended to just stay on a main street, no point in going toward the park at all).

It's possible that she entered the park somewhere else and was actually leaving the park through that entrance when she was attacked, but I've walked those routes and there would be many more logical spots to approach her if that's the path she took. I also think the dog was found closer to the entrance than she was, and since I assume the dog was incapacitated first, seems like that would be more consistent with an entry into the park at that spot.

Serial Killers: Modus Operandi, Signature, Staging & Posing
''Organized Offenders
According to the offender and crime scene dichotomy, organized crimes are premeditated and carefully planned, so little evidence is normally found at the scene. Organized criminals, according to the classification scheme, are antisocial (often psychopathic) but know right from wrong, are not insane, and show no remorse.''
''With organized offenders, there are typically three separate crime scenes: where the victim was approached by the killer, where the victim was killed, and where the victim’s body was disposed of.''

Disorganized Offenders
"Disorganized crimes, in contrast, are not planned and the criminals typically leave evidence such as fingerprints or blood at the scene of the murder. There is often no attempt to move or otherwise conceal the corpse after the murder. Disorganized criminals may be young, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or mentally ill. They often have deficient communication and social skills and may be below average in intelligence.

The disorganized offender is likely to come from an unstable or dysfunctional family. Disorganized offenders often have been abused physically or sexually by relatives. They are often sexually inhibited, sexually uninformed, and may have sexual aversions or other pathologies. They are more likely than organized criminals to be compulsive masturbators.''

"They are often isolated from others, live alone and are frightened or confused during the commission of their murders. They often do not have reliable transportation, so they kill their victims closer to home than organized offenders.

Significantly, disorganized killers will often “blitz” their victims—that is, use sudden and overwhelming force to assault them. The victim’s body is usually left where the attack took place and the killer makes no attempt to hide it. Jack the Ripper is a classic example of the disorganized serial killer.''

Very interesting and helpful, thank you. I'd never thought of Jack the Ripper as a disorganized killer, as he seemed to have a very premeditated plan and purpose in what he was doing, but I guess those terms can be defined in different ways.

Atlanta Police continue to search for the suspect in a deadly stabbing of a woman in Piedmont Park
“It’s scary for those of us who are here all the time,” said Manuel Patino.

Piedmont Park was packed Saturday afternoon. Many stopped by to pay their respects and help police. Investigators were handing out flyers, showing the surveillance image of Janness and her dog. But some are wondering about the camera located not far from where they were found.''
“As I was looking around, I see cameras,” said Mark Thevnin. “The police say they can’t talk about it but there are a lot of cameras for there to be no information about it.”

It’s unclear if the cameras nearby were working the night of the murder, an unsettling reality for so many who frequent the park.

The FBI has now confirmed that they will join APD and assist with their investigation.

Crimestoppers is now offering a $10,000 reward for anyone with information.''

Non working cameras do not bode well for seeing where he exited.
Also, on another note, black clothes probably wouldn't show blood in grainy security camera footage or by people passing in the night, and they could have had more clothing for cover in a backpack.
Blood splatter on hands and face could be washed off with a water bottle and then put the bottle back in the backpack.
If they were wearing a mask and a hat, they may not have much to identify them.
If it was just a stabbing, I would think maybe an argument ensued and it was spur of the moment.
But if any signature type mutilation is involved, or any posing we aren't privy to, it shows it was thought out and a different kind of killer entirely.

*Just noting, this happened July 11, in Buckhead (about an 8 minute drive from Piedmont).

Man found beaten and unconscious in Buckhead beginning to breathe on his own

"Atlanta police launched their investigation after a stranger found Josh badly beaten and unconscious on train tracks in the Lindbergh area of Buckhead. Police haven’t identified a suspect and are working to determine a motive. Josh was last seen on surveillance video partying with friends at The Heretic on Cheshire Bridge Road. What happened after he left the bar remains a mystery.

“We honestly don’t know at this point because we don’t know who they were and what their intentions were when they came across him,” Kelly said.

While police continue their investigation, some people in the LGBTQ community say they are shaken by what happened."

Absolutely devastating. Fly high, Katie and Bowie.

I'm leaning towards someone with a mental breakdown or on a drug induced episode. Hopefully the camera's picked someone up and were not just there for show. I'm glad the FBI is involved, hopefully the streets will be safer soon, even if just a little :(
