CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a Lyft driver who vanished after he was hired to drive someone to Florida.

Now, his family fears that he may be dead.

Deputies said Leonard John Beiner, 57, was in the Ball Ground area of Cherokee County on July 18. He worked part-time as a Lyft driver and was scheduled to drive a customer back to Jacksonville, Florida. His family has not been able to reach him since.

Channel 2′s Bryan Mims was at the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday, where he learned that Beiner checked himself into Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta on July 22 and walked out the next day. That’s the last time he was seen.

Mims talked to Beiner’s stepson, Jhaydon Ragsdale, who said the last time he talked to his step-father was on July 18.

“The first few days, I tried calling him,” Ragsdale said. “The phone rang and a few days after that it went straight to the operator line.”

Mims asked if Ragsdale knew of anyone who may want to hurt Beiner.

“No. He doesn’t have any money. Why would anyone want to kill him?” Ragsdale said.

Capt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office declined to speak on camera and said it is too early in the investigation. Baker said the family just filed the missing person report on Monday.

Ragsdale said that Beiner has gone off on his own before, which is why they didn’t report it sooner. He’s been recovering from drug addiction and sometimes isolates himself.

“It’s not abnormal for him to avoid contact with people while he’s relapsing,” Ragsdale said. “What became a concern is the week after when his phone went to the operator line and he was no longer on social media.”

Deputies believe he was driving a blue Hyundai Sante Fe with a Florida license plate.

Beiner is described as 5′7″ and 225 pounds with blue eyes and gray hair. He walks with a cane.

Anyone who has seen him is asked to contact the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

Jacksonville, Florida is about 6 ½ hours from Ball Ground, Georgia.

Beiner was working part-time as a Lyft driver and was scheduled to drop off a fare in Jacksonville, Florida, around the time of his disappearance, deputies said.

A spokesperson for Lyft said that Beiner did not provide or accept any rides outside of Georgia on July 18, the day he was last seen.

I'm afraid his missing has nothing to do with his work as a Lyft driver and more to do with an addition issue. I hope he didn't check himself out after possible entering for detox. The medical ramifications of quitting without medical supervision can be serious. (hallucinations, seizures, etc).

"News4JAX is told he walks with a cane."
Atlanta police have confirmed that Leonard Beiner checked into a hospital in Atlanta on July 22 and checked out on July 23. They could not confirm if Beiner took the nearly 400-mile trip to Jacksonville that he was hired for.

"According to Lyft’s website, there are rules about trips outside of certain areas, like you can take a Lyft outside of the coverage area as long as the ride doesn’t exceed a distance of 100 miles total.

But when News4JAX checked the Lyft app, options to book a trip from Jacksonville to Atlanta were available. It said the nearly 350-mile trip would cost just shy of $400.

If you’ve seen Beiner, or know where he might be, you are asked to call 911 or the Atlanta PD at 404-658-6666."

I was thinking along the same lines. Hope he’s ok wherever he may be.

Lyft said in a statement that its records show no evidence that Beiner had an out-of-state drop off scheduled for July 18, according to 11 Alive News.

The round trip would take approximately 12 hours.

Beiner was last seen on July 22, when he checked himself into Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta but left the following day.

Seems to me that the alleged out of state drop off is irrelevant given that he was confurked to be alive and in Atlanta 4 days later.

Not to say that your post is irrelevant, @mlhenn. I'm just curious why the trip is still being discussed.

I totally agree. Yet every article seems to come back to the out of state drop off. Majority of articles’ titles include it in them. I’m not sure why the drop off is getting so much attention.
