The Effingham County GA courthouse website has the "virus" alert posted, closing entry "until further notice" to the public. From past notices, May 13 was the last date mentioned to reopen. I guess it will be a "wait and see" period with all the backlog to catch up. This case is already two years old so maybe it will be close to the head of the list.

Good Morning! Hope you are doing well.

The Effingham County GA courthouse website continues to have the "virus" alert posted, closing entry "until further notice" to the public.

Found this site that reports GA extended the time frame until at least June 12. Also, it looks like this site may be helpful to check on the status of court trials in other states during this trying time.

It is possible they could conduct something over the phone but unless the media picks up on it, we may not find out about it.

  • May 12, 2020: The Georgia Supreme Court extended restrictions on in-person proceedings and suspension of jury trials through June 12.[7]
  • May 4, 2020: The Georgia Supreme Court extended restrictions on in-person proceedings and suspension jury trials through June 12. Under the order, courts were encouraged to develop plans for resuming nonessential court operations that could be conducted through video or phone conferencing or by maintaining social distancing measures. The order also urged judges to use technology for conducting remote proceedings as an alternative to in-person. In addition, the order announced the creation of a task force by Chief Justice Harold Melton to assist courts with remote proceedings and to develop reopening plans so that in-court proceedings can resume safely.

Linking another horrific case discovered last week in TN of a deceased 13 y/o girl buried in the backyard back in 2017 after she suffered months of abuse by her parents? Other children also abused. Due to the similarity of both the Crocker case and the Gray case, it will be interesting to see how each of the two states handle the crimes.

Niner,
Looks like the virus suspension for court cases in Georgia has now been extended through July 12, 2020. This new order with 11 pages is linked below.

'Accordingly, the Order Declaring Statewide Judicial Emergency, which would have expired on Friday, June 12, 2020, at 11:59 p.m., is further extended until Sunday, July 12, 2020, at 11:59 p.m. All Georgia courts shall continue to operate under the restrictions set forth in that Order as extended, with the following clarifications, modifications, and directions. Where this order refers to “public health guidance,” courts should consider the most specific current guidance provided by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH), and their local health departments.'

New GA law aims to prevent crimes related to abuse

There is a new law in Georgia that was created in hopes of saving the lives of children like Elwyn and Mary Crocker - two Effingham County teenagers who were found buried in their family’s backyard.

Officials with the Georgia Division of Children and Family Services say they lost track of the Crocker children after they were pulled out of the school system by their parents.

The law was designed to create more oversight when students are taken out of the school system. Parents are supposed to notify the state’s Department of Education of the change within 30 days. Under the new law, the department must tell the school it has received the paperwork.

I like this part of it from your link.

If a school hasn’t heard from the agency and the child hasn’t come back to school within 45 days, the Department of Family and Children Services will be notified to check on the child.

Hey @watcher9 - just going thru my oldies - and wondering if there are any court dates for these "people"? I do see trials/hearings "might" resume in October.

Effingham Court website still has the Special Notice posted - COVID19 VIRUS

Not knowing if the website just hadn't been updated, I started checking other counties in GA as to how they are proceeding. Gwinnett County is listed below. Another county (lost link) said that jury trials might not begin until after the first of the year. Looking at other counties, I think the problems lies in how to seat a jury with the current COVID restrictions such as 6 ft apart. I wonder if this delay could cause a problem of continuing to keep accused person(s) jailed without a trial.

Gwinnett County which is near Atlanta has this posted.

On Thursday, September 10, Chief Justice Harold D. Melton of the Supreme Court of Georgia extended the statewide judicial emergency declaration through Saturday, October 10.
