Missing 70-year-old man found dismembered in neighbor's home didn't know killer, police say

A man has been jailed after Clayton County authorities said they found the remains of his neighbor in his house.

Channel 2 Action News was at the scene in Clayton County where at least a dozen police officers and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were just after 11 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities told Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes that Robert Page's family reported him missing earlier in the day.

Using a neighbor’s surveillance video, police were able to arrest Christian Ponce-Martinez, 25, after he was seen on Page's property.

Police said he murdered Page and then dismembered and hid Page's body. Part of his body was located in a cooler, and other parts of his body were located under two tarps in the backyard

“The officers went to the back of the residence and located the offender hiding under a couch, acting very nervous and suspicious. Officers then noticed a trail of blood. They followed it and it was Robert Page’s dismembered remains," Maj. Craig Hammer said

Police said Ponce-Martinez has been not only uncooperative but also combative. On Friday night, police added an obstruction charge against him for his alleged behavior at the police department.

People aren't safe any where, even at home.
Is there an increase of such crimes, or is it we are now more aware of them due to the media.

Officers have not determined a motive but believe some sort of argument took place outside the Page home.

Page's accused murderer, 25-year-old Cristian Martinez, didn't even know Page and is not only uncooperative, but also combative with officers.

Authorities found Martinez in the house next door, where he hid under a couch with Page's cell phone. Police then found Page's remains.

"Part of his body was located in a cooler, and other parts of his body were located under two tarps in the backyard," police said.

Martinez was renting a room in the house. Police say he moved to Georgia from Mexico three months ago. Officials are now working with federal investigators to determine whether he came to the United States legally.

"...Investigators are still working to determine what led Christian Martinez ... to murder his elderly neighbor Robert Page and dismember his body....

A motive for the heinous killing remains unclear, but investigators said it appeared the two men may have had some sort of argument at Page’s home prior to his death. According to 11 Alive, Martinez had moved into the home next door just three months ago from Mexico and was renting a room there. Police said they don’t believe the men knew each other.

Authorities are now working to determine if Martinez came to the U.S. legally. This week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials confirmed it has a hold on Martinez but said he isn’t in the custody of the agency, the news station reported.

Authorities charged the suspect with malice murder but tacked on an obstruction charge Friday for his alleged behavior at the police department. Police said Martinez has not only been uncooperative with the investigation, but even combative at times. He is currently being held at the Clayton County Jail without bail, according to WSB-TV...."

"CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. - A month after a 70-year-old man was found dead hours after he was reported missing, his widow is talking about the nearly 50-year marriage she had with him.

Authorities said Robert Page's family reported him missing on Nov. 8. Using a neighbor’s surveillance video, police were able to arrest Christian Ponce-Martinez, 25, after he was seen on Page's property.

Police said Ponce-Martinez murdered Page and then dismembered and hid Page's body.

Lula Page is still trying to figure out how to live life without her husband, who she was married to for 49 years.

“I can’t cry. I’m still thinking in my mind that’s the denial part of it. I’m still thinking in my mind he’s going to walk around that corner,” Page told Channel 2’s Tyisha Fernandes. ...

The suspect has a preliminary hearing Thursday morning. Page told Fernandes that she’ll be there to look the suspect in the eye and see if he'll say anything in court..."

Ponce-Martinez “withdrew his request for bond on Friday. His attorney indicated he will complete the paperwork for a psychological exam.”

Ponce-Martinez is charged with murder, obstruction of an officer and interfering with government property in the disappearance and death of Robert Page.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman confirmed that Ponce-Martinez has an immigration detainer.

“Detainers apply at whatever point a person is released from criminal custody. It does not supercede the criminal charge.” In other words, if Ponce-Martinez were convicted, he would have to serve his sentence in the U.S. before being deported if it is determined that he is not a U.S. citizen.

Clayton County Police said that Ponce-Martinez had recently moved to Morrow from Mexico.

"...To avoid being fired, the employee quit and so did the employee who took the grisly image.

Page’s family, however, is outraged that the employee was given the option to quit in lieu of being fired.
“Visually trying to see my father’s head in a cooler is enough. But now you take it and you take pictures with it?” said Page’s daughter, Reba Sanchez.

“You taking pictures, making light of a situation like that? I mean, you’re just as evil to me as that murderer.”

Sanchez is struggling to understand the former employee’s actions.

“That’s someone’s loved one. You wouldn’t want anyone to do that to your family member. So why would you do it to mine,” Sanchez said.

“It’s awful that somebody would be that evil,” said Page’s widow, Lula Page. She said she was disturbed when she heard that the photo existed....

"DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - Channel 2 Action News is learning more about a former Georgia Bureau of Investigation employee who resigned after he was seen in a disturbing photo with a victim's remains....

"Visually trying to see my father's head in a cooler is enough. But now you take it and you take pictures with it?" Page's daughter, Reba Sanchez, told Channel 2's Tom Jones. "You taking pictures, making light of a situation like that? I mean, you're just as evil to me as that murderer." ...

Jones filed an open records request to find out more about Wilson's and Brown's work history.

Wilson's resignation letter is brief and to the point. Brown's letter said ,"It's been an honor working for the agency and he sincerely apologized for any problems he's created."...

Documents show Wilson was reprimanded for a social media post his bosses said appeared threatening to Gov. Nathan Deal and was racially offensive.

He was docked two days' pay for using taxpayer money to go to Denver for a training conference, signing in at the conference then not attending,

He was disciplined for not taking a department-mandated quiz and for using profanity with a superior. That Colorado trip cost taxpayers about $3,000.

Page's grandson told Jones the photo wouldn't have been snapped if the agency had gotten rid of Wilson before it was taken.

The GBI said it investigated and ended the employment of both men, calling what they did highly inappropriate."
