When a 911 Operator Vanishes Into Thin Air Her Deadly Secret is Exposed

*(CBS)Watch "48 Hours Mystery: The Secret" Saturday, Jan. 30 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
<snipped>
When Theresa Parker unexpectedly disappeared in March 2007, the small town of LaFayette, Ga., was shocked. So beloved was the 911 dispatcher that hundreds of people came out to search nearly 175 square miles of land for her.

Theresa, who loved helping others, was adored by family and friends including her police officer husband, Sam Parker. The couple, who married in 1993, seemed a perfect match.

But after 13 years of marriage the two decided to split and Theresa found her own place. One night after visiting her sister, Theresa left to go home, but was never heard from again.

Police found her car at the couple's home, but there was no sign of Theresa and no obvious signs of foul play. Investigators' extensive search of the heavy terrain around the home would not turn up a body, but as they turned their focus to her husband Sam, the probe would soon expose his dark side and Theresa's deadly secret.

48 Hours Mystery to Feature Theresa Parker Case, Only One Local Journalist Spoke to Her Accused Murderer
January 28, 2010 - 7:30pm.
<snipped>
Three years after Walker County 911 Dispatcher Theresa Parker disappeared her husband Sam Parker still sticks by his story, "She's a missing person and I don't know where she is."

The former LaFayette Police officer, was convicted in her murder last year...even though a body was never found. The only local journalist who got his story first hand was UC TV's Judy O'Neal, "Sam trusted us to do it 'cause he said we wouldn't edit what he said."

She says the case's world wide attention was a lot for the LaFayette community to bear, "I directly asked him 'Did you kill Theresa?' And his answer was 'No.' Whether or not that's correct. I've never been 100% convinced that his did kill Theresa." O'Neal says there's still more story to tell, "I think somewhere there's a sleeper. I've thought that from the word go."

Many of the tips detectives used in the Sam Parker investigation came in to O'Neal's call lines... But now CBS News magazine 48 Hours Mystery is following up on those clues. O'Neal says they even have a few surprises, "No, the story's not finished. There's more to the story."

48 Hours Mystery Correspondent Tracy Smith will give us a live exclusive interview tomorrow on WDEF News 12 at Noon.

48 Hours Mystery to Examine Theresa Parker Case
January 27, 2010 - 7:46pm.
<snipped>
Susie's Sunshine Café is the lunch hotspot in LaFayette and the Theresa Parker case was once again the lunch time buzz...

Clinton Chapman is grabbing lunch with his father and grandfather, "You couldn't have a murder with out a body. You know, that's what I though the justice system was all about, you had to prove it...and they didn't." Clinton never thought Sam Parker was guilty... His grandfather Roger wasn't so sure... And says this weekend's 48 Hours Mysterys special might shed new light.

Theresa's family refused to give up the search.

Folks in the community were sharply divided over whether her husband committed any crime.

Jackie Walker says, "Her family was coming in here during them looking for her and they just want their sister and their daughter. Somebody needs to tell where she is." Billie Baker says, "They've found him guilty, but they still need to lay her to rest somehow."

Back at the Chapman's table Clinton says it's time for the story to go away... Roger says the 48 Hours Mystery might help, "Folks are gonna talk about it until it's put to rest, and maybe this will get some closure for some folks."

Story on Sam Parker trial to air Saturday on CBS
Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010
<snipped>
"It's one of those stories where you think maybe you know what happened, then you find out a little more information, and then suddenly you find out a little more information, and then suddenly there's a twist and maybe you don't know what happened," said Tracy Smith, a CBS correspondent who reported the story for "48 Hours."

"I think even if you followed the Parker case, there will still be things surprising or new to you in this hour," she said. "We got a chance to talk with the jury; you haven't heard a lot from the jury."

A preview of the "48 Hours" broadcast on the CBS Web site runs less than a minute and features 911 calls about Mrs. Parker's disappearance and interview clips with Sam Parker, Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson and others involved in the trial.

Floyd County District Attorney Leigh Patterson, who prosecuted Mr. Parker, spoke with "48 Hours" for the episode.

Lookout Mountain Public Defender David Dunn will be watching, too. Mr. Dunn still represents Mr. Parker, who is appealing his conviction to the Georgia Supreme Court. Mr. Dunn said he decided to cooperate with "48 Hours" to ensure that the story was told fairly. He admitted that, since his client is still appealing his conviction, the national media attention makes him a little nervous.

"(The episode) certainly could figure into a future trial," he said. "That will depend on the objectivity of the piece."

Ms. Smith said it wasn't hard to find willing interview subjects. Family and friends of Mrs. Parker want to see her remembered, while those who support Mr. Parker believe he's been misrepresented

'48 Hours Mystery' to showcase Walker County’s Sam Parker murder trial Saturday
January 29, 2010
<snipped>
About a half-dozen “48 Hours Mystery” producers and crew members, at any given, were on site for Parker’s murder trial in Walker County Superior Court in downtown LaFayette from late August to early September.

Tracy Smith, a correspondent with “48 Hours Mystery,” was here for the beginning and end of the trial. She predicted viewers are in for a surprise when the episode airs next weekend.

Smith said eight jurors were interviewed for the episode and their “take” on the trial may not be what most in the area would expect.

Parker was accused of murdering his wife Theresa, a dispatcher with Walker County 911 who disappeared in March 2007. At the time, he was a sergeant with the LaFayette Police Department. He was charged with his wife’s murder in February 2008, even though her body was never found. He was found guilty and is currently serving a life sentence.

“48 Hours Mystery” to showcase Walker County’s Sam Parker murder case
Jan 20, 2010
<snipped>
Smith said eight jurors were interviewed for the episode and their “take” on the trial may not be what most in the area would expect.

Smith said the jurors took the case very seriously — and to heart, often leaving jury deliberations in tears. In the show the jurors discuss what rang true for them during the trial. That, she said, could be a big surprise for local residents who followed the trial closely.

Smith said “48 Hours Mystery” interviewed Parker as the jury deliberations were going on and after the trial ended.

Smith described Walker County and LaFayette as an inviting town that made the “48 Hours Mystery” crew feel like family. “Everyone was so nice to us,” she said. Smith said everyone had an opinion in the case, ranging from “he did it” to “she is still alive.”

Smith said the producers and crew members frequented Suzie’s Sunset Café in downtown LaFayette to “hear what the town was talking about” regarding the trial. “Walking into Suzie’s was like running into friends,” she said. The “48 Hours Mystery” crew spent a lot of time at Suzie’s, and of course at the courthouse, and stayed overnight in Chattanooga.

Parker attorney requests new trial
Friday, Sept. 11, 2009
<snipped>
The defense attorney for convicted murderer Sam Parker said his request for a new trial is the first step in the appeals process. David Dunn, Lookout Mountain Judicial District public defender, filed the motion Tuesday with the Walker County clerk.

Walker County Superior Court Judge Jon "Bo" Wood will review the request once trial transcripts are available, which could take months, Mr. Dunn said. But he said he doesn't expect the judge to grant a new trial, and the next step would come when he files a notice of appeal to the Georgia Supreme Court.

Mr. Dunn said he based his filing on several factors, including insufficient evidence and a series of rulings on pretrial motions. Mr. Dunn estimated that the entire appeals process could take one year or longer.

UPDATED: 48 Hours Mystery: The Secret
When A 911 Operator Married to a Cop Vanishes Into Thin Air, Her Deadly Secret Is Exposed
LaFAYETTE, Ga., Jan. 30, 2010
<snipped>
"Life still goes at a small pace here in LaFayette, Walker County. You can be to work in just a few minutes…. be home in a few minutes," according to Sheriff Steve Wilson. "We're located right in the heart of the Bible Belt. "Being able to go on Friday night to watch your children play football or watch your daughter cheerlead as I did, that’s what small towns are all about." "She was the middle sister and I was the youngest," Christina Hall told "48 Hours Mystery" contributing correspondent Tracy Smith of her sister, Theresa Parker. "Theresa loved everybody. She loved family - that was the most important thing to her. …You think of the best sister you could have and she was definitely…"

"She's one of our own. She's a 911 dispatcher," said FBI Special Agent Marc Veazey." "She's that person on the other end of the radio when you’re in need, she's there." "When I hugged her that night, it was just the strangest thing," Hall recalled. "It was almost like just this feelin' of I was never gonna see her again. "She's a missing person and I don’t know where she is," said Sam Parker.

Part of the problem investigators have in searching for Theresa is the terrain. The woods across from the Parker's home go on for miles and miles in every direction. This is mountain country and it's thick with trees and brush all over the ground. It’s a perfect place to hide something and chances are no one will ever find it. "There’s hundreds and hundreds of old wells in this area. And Mr. Parker grew up here," FBI Special Agent Marc Veazey said. "His childhood was spent hunting and fishing in these woods. His adulthood is spent fishing in the ponds all around this area. He knows this like the back of his hand."

Investigators discovered that Sam told people -perhaps jokingly-he could use that knowledge to do some pretty awful things. "He told everybody in Walker County, but a couple, that he knew how to get rid of a body and no one [would] ever find it," GBI Special Agent James Harris said. "He'd talk about puttin' 'em in ponds and the turtles would eat 'em." "I am hopeful they'll find her. I hope they find her in good health," said Sam Parker.

"Every mornin', when I open my eyes, I think about her," said Hall. "You know, at night, when I lay my head down, to go to sleep, I think about her. You know, 'Theresa, where could you be?'" "I don’t believe that she would have just vanished off the face of the Earth," said Veazey. "We knew this was not the typical missing person's case in Walker County," the sheriff said. "This was gonna be bigger than Walker County when it was all said and done."

Christina Hall hangs on to memories of her older sister - grateful for the guilty verdict, but painfully aware that the man destined to spend the rest of his life in prison may be the only one who holds the key to finding Theresa. "You want to find her, bring her home, lay her to rest. That's what she deserves, you know. She’s not a piece of trash," she said. "And that’s how I feel he treated her. Wherever she is out there, she doesn't deserve to be there."

Show on Parker disappearance features NWHS grad
Possible surprise on ‘48 Hours Mystery’ tonight

Even without a crime scene, murder weapon or the victim’s body, Leigh Patterson believes she proved her case when a jury found Sam Parker guilty of killing his wife, former Walker County 911 operator Theresa Parker.

Search crews of various agencies and townspeople have scoured 175 square miles of woods and ponds in Walker County and beyond after Theresa Parker went missing in March of 2007. Tonight on CBS’s “48 Hours Mystery” broadcast, at least one person hints that Theresa Parker may have planned and carried out her own disappearance.

Patterson said “48 Hours” correspondent Tracy Smith spent about three hours with her over the phone for the show.

“Sam Parker is right where he needs to be, absolutely,” she said. “We still have not found Theresa Parker’s body and we’re still searching.”

Patterson said she could not reveal search areas because of possible interruption by the media. She was asked if Sam Parker showed any emotion during his trial.

“I did not see any remorse at all,” she said, “but I’m sure he was instructed by his defense counsel (to avoid expressing himself). My aides told me he would grind his teeth or tighten his jaw at times when we were presenting evidence.”

'48 Hours Mystery' features Parker case
January 30, 2010

Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson, who was interviewed for the piece, said afterward that he thought the show did “a good job of accurately portraying what was brought out at the trial,” but he did not see much new information in the broadcast.

“The only thing that I did not really know was the poll of the jury,” Sheriff Wilson said. “I understand they said that they were two to convict and 10 undecided when they first started deliberating. That was the first time I had actually heard that.”

During Mrs. Smith’s interview with eight members of the jury, several said they did not believe testimony from one of the prosecution’s witnesses, former LaFayette, Ga., police officer Ben Chaffin. Jury members also said they considered much of the evidence circumstantial.

The show highlighted that after three days of deliberation, the jury eventually came to a unanimous decision to convict Mr. Parker on Sept. 3, 2009 after reviewing his cell phone records.

Read through the transcripts and am still not sure what "the secret" is. Was it that she was being physically abused by her husband?

Wow. That's all I have to say. I just can't believe anything that Sam Walker said.. not any of his statements to LE or his interview on 48hrs.

A violent drunk with a grudge..

And seriously.. who in the heck goes on a date at 1:30 in the frickin morning?!?

I was thinking the same thing...He's a and i'm glad he got what he deserves. I just wish he'd have some COMPASSION and a wake up call - realize he's NOT getting out of jail...why not tell the family where she is!
That is what I don't get about these people. You're in jail - for life - we all know you did it. Why not just show a little compassion for the family so that they can have a proper burial??? I just wanna SHAKE him!!

Human remains are found in Chattooga County, believed to be the body of Theresa Park. Parker has been missing since March 2007. Her husband was convicted in her murder. Click the "Play" button to watch continuing coverage beginning at 5 pm.

I'm so glad she is coming home to be with her family. RIP Theresa. May your family find comfort in having you back with them and the justice that was delivered to SP.
