The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office asked the public for help locating Vaughn Callenback, 77, who has been missing since July 5.

Vaughn Callenback was last seen on July 5 in Rabun County. A missing persons report was filed by a family member on July 13.

Callenback’s vehicle was located in an area off of Coleman River Road.

Callenback is described as a white male, 5’7” 165 Ibs.,with a whitish/gray beard.

Callenback was last seen on July 5 at United Community Bank in Clayton, depositing money.

Callenback’s truck was located over an embankment two days later on Old Coleman River Road in Rabun County.

On July 13, Knight’s sister spoke with their stepbrother and learned he had not seen their father in almost a week. Payne filed a missing person’s report.

It was at that time that Knight says the family learned his truck had been towed.

The outcome doesn't seem that great, given the truck being found down an embankment. Even so, I really hope Vaughn can be found safe and reunited with his loved ones. Then again, it's been over a month now and that's probably unlikely. Ugh... Then I hope his remains can be recovered and his loved ones can lay him to rest.

His daughter says the sheriff’s office didn’t take any fingerprints from the truck before it was towed and claims authorities only searched for a few days before calling it off.

Authorities say after that hasty search, they returned to where the truck was found on July 14. “These searches continued over a period of six days following the initial search operation,”

Lieutenant Mark Gerrells II tells Now Habersham the sheriff’s office requested the GBI’s assistance on July 17.

According to Gerrells, the initial incident report taken when the truck was found on July 7 states the deputy did not observe any evidence suggesting the vehicle was involved in an accident. Instead, it appeared that the vehicle was parked on the side of the road and may not have been in gear.

A northeast Georgia man has been missing since July 5, according to his family.

Vaughan Callenback, 77, was last seen by his daughter, Joanie Callenback Knight, at her home in Franklin County, North Carolina, on July 4. The very last known time he was seen was on July 5 at United Community Bank in Clayton, where he deposited a check his daughter had given him, according to NowHabersham.com.

Callenback's truck was found two days later off Old Coleman River Road. The Rabun County Sheriff's Office reportedly had the truck towed from the scene. It appears the deputy who found the truck believed it had been abandoned. The deputy called the number associated with the registered owner's name but did not receive an answer.

On July 13, a missing persons report was filed after the family realized they had not seen Callenback in almost a week.

According to Knight, her father is a typical "mountain man" who keeps to himself and lives a "simple, humble life" with his dogs and chickens. He also enjoys fishing. Knight says her father does not have a cell phone and does not have dementia. She also mentioned that he has "never just walked away." However, he does have high blood pressure and suffered a heart attack a few years ago.

Knight describes her father as 5-feet-7-inches tall, weighing approximately 160 pounds, with "piercing" blue eyes. She is asking anyone who has seen her father to call 911 or contact the Rabun County Sheriff's Office.

Okay, so JMO, but that truck is not ‘abandoned.’ It looks like it’s either been in an accident or been intentionally ditched there. I hope they looked under and around it after towing it out.

Elderly Rabun County man still missing weeks after truck found abandoned down embankment

The Rabun County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating the disappearance of 77-year-old Vaughn Callenback.

On July 7, his truck was found backed down an embankment in a heavily wooded area near the Old Coleman River Road.

On Thursday, the Rabun County Sheriff's Office said the investigation into Callenback's disappearance is active and ongoing. The sheriff's office confirmed it asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to help them in the search for Callenback.

Candlelight vigil held for missing Rabun County man

Members of the Rabun County community showed their support for a missing Rabun County man Saturday evening during a candlelight vigil.

The solemn vigil held for Vaughn Callenback was attended by more than 50 family, friends, and supporters who gathered to pray for his safe return.

With little to go on as far as clues to Callenback’s whereabouts, the incoming sheriff echoed Worley’s sentiment and encouraged those gathered to lean on faith and each other.

After the vigil, Gerrells said that since he is not sheriff yet, he does not have many answers. However, when he gets into office, he said he will make this case a priority to bring closure to the family.


He has now been missing for 59 days.
