Teton County, Wyoming, Coroner Dr. Brent Blue told CNN an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, saying officials would confirm the identity of the remains through photographs, personal identification or DNA.

Ex-homicide detective Pat Diaz slams handling of Gabby Petito case (nypost.com)

Pat Diaz, a former Miami-Dade homicide detective, told Fox News that investigators in North Port didn’t necessarily have to suspect a crime in order to obtain warrants in a missing-person case.

“Why would you [try to] get consent from the guy, and not get a search warrant?” Diaz told the news outlet Sunday. “You can get a search warrant for everything in that house, including his laptop.”

The former 35-year detective added that examining Laundrie’s electronics would have provided significant clues about Petito’s whereabouts before her disappearance – even if no crime was suspected and her boyfriend has kept mum.

But North Port police spokesman Josh Taylor told Fox News that his department “has no authority to execute a possible federal search warrant on our own.”

How Did Van-Life Blogger Gabby Petito Die? The Cause May Not Be So Easy to Determine (thedailybeast.com)
Pinpointing a cause of death would be the responsibility of the coroner, who will make a call as to which of five categories the death corresponds to: homicide, accident, suicide, natural causes, or undetermined. “The likelihood is high that he’ll declare it a homicide,” Kobilinsky said. “This is a healthy 22-year-old that went missing under mysterious circumstances.”

Even if the remains are mostly skeletal, a coroner would look for an impression in the skull or the fracturing of the hyoid bone in the neck—signs that would point to blunt force trauma and manual strangulation, respectively.

In 2007, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) developed a software application known as the Evidence Collection Management (ECM) System." https://www.fletc.gov/sites/default/files/FLETC_Journal-Fall_2016-508_0.pdf

The ECM is a big box, it's the management system for the evidence being collected. It prints evidence tags and takes inputs from cameras on site, etc. On top will also be a big yellow box. In that yellow box are items used to get other evidence, like vials, bags, etc. Everything gets logged into the large box in the bottom which is a computer system. Hence the name ECM-or Evidence Collection and Management. The above article explains the system in more detail.

"I'm a protective father, if my daughter cries, I'm gonna fix the problem," Joseph Petito said. "That's not something she's going to bring up to me because I'm going to get involved real quick."

He said it was hard to watch the police body camera footage of Gabby talking with police in Utah after an "altercation" with Laundrie because he "can't bring himself to see my daughter cry."

Petito said Gabby never mentioned that incident to him.

In the same video, Gabby said she "has OCD," but her father said she was never diagnosed.

"She was clean, she likes things in their place," he said. "[The van] is a confined space. Making sure things are put away...doesn't seem OCD to me."

He added that she "doesn't have mental instability," and the incident with police "sounds like [Gabby and Laundrie] were just having an argument."
