Theories abound and facts are few..... I get so frustrated following Maddie's disappearance. It's one more case where it seems someone just fell off the face of the earth. We know that can't happen but like so many missing person cases there are few substantiated facts and clues.
Where is little Maddie? What happened to an innocent little child over 4 months ago????

Mr Balista seems pretty on himself (soaking up the limelight?) saying

"it was his testimony in four hours of interviews with Portuguese detectives that led to officers questioning why it was part-time GP Kate, 39, who discovered her daughter had vanished and raised the alarm"

Why do I get the feeling this guy is just in for his 15 minutes.

Just because some waiter has a theory that "it had to be one of the family or a friend. It had to be someone close.” doesn't make it true, truth is noone knows what happened to Maddie.

 She is the last person who should be working with child welfare groups. Talk about inappropriate!
Kate McCann has been quoted that her three children were hard to handle, how could she handle other children and probably more that three, imo this is another smokescreen to put us off track or to try and get people to think of her as a caring parent.......not.

I think that if one of the parents killed Madeline, it was Kate. Probably before ever going to the bar because Madeline probably wouldn't lie down and go to sleep knowing that she was going to be left alone and because it was so early. Maybe Madeline had bruises so they couldn't arrange for the whole thing to look like some accident. Cuddle cat was probably going to be placed with the body then they/he/she changed their mind or actually forgot to grab the stuffed animal.

Good theory hcc2007.

In your scenario though why would one of Gerrys friends help him to hide the body etc?
As an intelligent person that person must have known covering up a death is a crime what did they have to gain from being an accessory to murder?
I think that person would have more than misgivings, unless they were also somehow responsible for Maddie's death also there is no good reason for anyone to put themselves in such a position.

I'm not hcc2007 but I would like to give you why I think a friend would help...They where wasted. Drunk people, intelligent or otherwise, don't use good judgement. (I have a niece to prove this) That's why it's against the law to drive a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

I don't know about all of you, but on vacation, we tend to start drinking WAY before supper  . They could have been half drunk before they even met at the restaurant.

Heck, Kate could have started drinking at "high tea". As thin as she is, a few drinks could have caused her to black out, (not pass out...black out)and she not even remember the death of Madeleine.

If Kate and Gerry had a tiff when he went for his tennis lesson, and he asked his friend to stop in and check in on Kate, maybe Gerry knew Kate had started drinking< (maybe that was the reason for the tiff). Maybe THAT is why He asked his friend to check on her. To see if she was plastered. Thus his statement , "Kate was happily COPING with her children, including Madeleine".

While I don't trust either of the McCanns, I don't think it's fair to indicate the McCanns had been drinking or Kate was "plastered." No one has alluded to them being drunk.

It was a theory. Based on the many reports that 10-14 bottles of wine where delivered to their dinner Table at the Tapas Bar.

At least 1 bottle per guest. I'm a pretty big woman, and I am "Plastered" after a bottle of wine. Also, if you take into consideration their obscure time line, they would have had to slam all that wine between trips to check on children, and visiting friends on the street.

How horrible for those children and their families.
Dreadful tragedy, those poor orphans now!

Parents died trying to save their kids big difference to the case that we are discussing here!

While I do not think Ms. McCann should consider childcare until her status as a suspect has been cleared, I am more intriqued with why she no longer wants to be a doctor. She only works a couple of days a week. How hard can that be? 2 days a week, good pay and very little "office" responsibility (I realize she has patient responsibility, but really not even much of that if she is just filling in for other doctors).

I think she worked one day a week that is what i so amazing about her claiming to be in contact with so many cadavers.

If she is innocent then she wants to help other missing children for noble reasons, if she is guilty then to salve her conscience!

I agree Barnaby - but why no more doctor? She can help many as a doctor, children included. Pure speculation here, but does she want to stop being a doctor because it was her doctor skills that landed her in this situation? Meaning - did she overdose Maddie? I believe she is trained as an anesthiologist (however you spell that), so she should have known how much of a drug Maddie could handle. She blew it and now has no self-confidence left?

I don't know, just seems odd. As a doctor, she has clout and the ability to help many and it sounds as if she is ready to throw that away to become a babysitter.....

From her own descriptions of herself at present and her mother's, with two hysterical breakdowns per day, she probably feels emotionally unstable and unable to serve as a GP. My understanding and reading of news reports was that she worked two days a week in the past. I know I wouldn't be able to perform in such a capacity after such a loss.

I think it was more like two days a week.

I think that Kate is much more driven to succeed or have a meaningful position that perhaps she or Gerry realized, or perhaps could admit.

Becoming a kind of "child welfare advocate" with speaking arrangements and media contacts is much more glamorous than simply being the part time fill-in GP. As the part time "locum" GP, Kate had limited hours and good pay, but not the excellent pay and prestige she had as a specialist. She was basically doing the easy stuff that she mastered, that would be no intellectual challenge for her at all.

So this opportunity to trade the part time job for something she can justify to herself as actually have meaning, as something no one else can do (the article mentioned that she by means of her special circumstances would be in a unique position to speak to other traumatized parents) would be much more satisfying to Kate.

& I would not have been able to jog the day after my daughter went missing!

I don't think she would be a babysitter she would gain celebrity status as an advocate for child welfare & that notice is what is craved I think rather than a genuine concern for children, if you do not care about your own how the heck can you care about anyones elses?

Also she really may not have a choice about going back to practice medicine, don't forget that many people are suspicious of her & resent her carelessness which lead to Madeleines fate, many people would not want her as their GP, combined with the fact that noone knows what attitude the medical council will eventually take. She may well just be covering all eventualities!

Perhaps she should consider staying at home with her remaining children as being satisfying rather than travelling all over the world campaigning for other peoples children! If I had lost one through my absence I think I would make damned sure nothing ill befell the others by the same means regardless of my personal ambitions for 5 minutes of fame!

Can someone please tell me how to multiquote rather than answering posts individually, TIA!
