President Hollande said it was unknown if residences could be affected, but a local says the area is very remote and there are no residences. Also says he saw many, many fire trucks on the way there but the area is particularly difficult to access.

Most of the victims are thought to be German.

'We know all the passengers are dead' (rescuer near site). He says the amount of snow is the biggest problem.

(From BBC radio)

"We heard a strange noise...a deep noise, like an earthquake. I was working and did not think anymore, then someone came and told us there had been a plane crash." (Nearby resident)

Weather conditions were good. An expert, Chris Yates, is saying this "sounds like mechanical failure".

( BBC radio.)

My DH is a commercial pilot here in the US, and everyone of these tragedies hits home. I am still more afraid to drive than fly. German pilots are very skilled, and being well into he flight at cruising altitude, I suspect something was wrong with he aircraft.

I can't help hoping for a miracle or two. Deep snow can sometimes mean survivors in crashes. It seems very unlikely though. Parts of the crash are also in a forest, adding to the difficulties.

How long does it typically take for a flight manifest to become available?

The presenters on BBC rolling news just now seemed to suggest that the plane's route was 'much further to the east" than expected - can anyone comment on this?

Was the plane expected to fly along the red line on the map? Hmmm.

BBC live reporting on their website has this screen shot showing the plane climbed to 38,000 feet, then descended, until the signal was lost at 6,800 feet.

Thoughts are with family and friends of everyone on board.

I believe that is the original path prior to this flight.

it will be timely! Luth runs a very very sophisticated and sharp operation- MAL spoiled all that ! Should be soon

Sometimes, a Captain can request a deviation from the original plan. I know I have seen this mostly because of weather or air conditions. On flight aware, it will show the expected route before a flight, and it can sometimes change during the flight. I hope this makes sense. I can ask DH more when he lands.
