Germany - Peggy Knobloch, 9, murdered, Lichtenberg, 7 May 2001 *Arrest in 2018*

I don't know, I assume some new information has come in and that's why the connection is suddenly the news again, but most of the news articles about it are in German so I can't understand them.

Well, I do and I cannot understand the sudden interest.
The Berliner Morgenpost mentions on November 23 that the authorities are still busy determining IF the DNA find is a result of contamination.
https://www.morgenpost.de/politik/a...um-getoeteten-Maedchen-Peggy-beantworten.html

wobei die Behörden derzeit noch klären, ob diese Spur von einer Verunreinigung stammt.

IMHO the British press, especially the Guardian and the BBC, take an unhealthy interest in all things German whenever they sniff "the war".

Being German in Germany I do understand the intererst. Both cases are highly publicised and in the public eye for years. The finding of the body of poor Peggy and the possibility of a connection is absolutely huge!

And yes, British media is hateful to German issues most of the time. I lived in the UK for over 6 years and am in daily contact with British colleagues. Admit to reading bad tabloids like daily mail as well. It truly is the worst. Light entertainment at lunchtime at best. However they do tend to get pictures far faster and more details than others.

BEATE ZSCHÄPE SPEAKS ~ SHE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT PEGGY KNOBLAUCH

Web.de

On Thursday during the NSU trial, the alleged rightwing terrorist Beate Zschäpe made a statement about the case of Peggy Knobloch who disappeared 15 years ago. She knows nothing about the case, Zschäpe's lawyer Hermann Borchert read aloud in court.

In the vicinity of the mortal remains of the girl, DNA traces of the alleged NSU terrorist Uwe Böhnhardt had been discovered.

Beate Zschäpe had announced her intention to submit a written statement to the questions put by the court.
Hopes that the alleged NSU terrorist could shed light into the darkness surrounding the case of Peggy Knobloch have now been smashed. She has no information about the disappearance and death of the girl, according to Zschäpes lawyer Hermann Borchert who read her written statement aloud.
Some persons who attended the process shook their heads in disbelief.

Surprised, anyone? I'm not surprised at all. Whatever she wanted to tell, she might have told right away. No need to string the Court and everybody else along and make them wait till Thursday.

THREE THEORIES ABOUT THE PIECE OF FABRIC WITH DNA

Web.de
https://web.de/magazine/panorama/fall-peggy/beate-zschaepe-peggy-uwe-boehnhardt-weiss-32051238

Theory 1: Pure coincidence

The DNA of Uwe Böhnhardt was not found on skeletal parts of Peggy, but on a piece of fabric that had been discovered near the spot where the bones were found.

The piece of fabric would have been part of a blanket. Theoretically, it is also possible that in the meantime Uwe Böhnhardt had been hiding in the subsoil of that part of the forest part in the Thuringer Natur Park Schiefergebirge. A man from the entourage of the NSU is said to have used a forest hut near Rodacherbrunn.
Chemnitz, Jena, Zwickau - the whereabouts of Uwe Böhnhardt are only about an hour and a half away by car from the Waldstück near Rodacherbrunn.

Theory 2: Contaminated results

A quite conceivable scenario. The cases of Peggy and the NSU have a common interface at the Rechtsmedizinisches Institut of the Universitätsklinik Jena. Here the autopsy of body of Uwe Böhnhardt was done in November 2011 and the skeletal remains of Peggy were investigated forensically in July 2016.

Possibly DNA traces of Uwe Böhnhardt could have passed over a contamination to the piece of fabric from the location of the skeleton parts.

However, as BR Online reported, the legal physicians in Jena were only entrusted with the investigation of the skeleton of the girl, but not with the fragment of fabric, that carries the DNA traces of Uwe Böhnhardt. Moreover, in this case, Böhnhardt's DNA would have escaped every cleaning process regulated by strict requirements for five consecutive years.

However, Herbert Potzel, a senior prosecutor, did not yet want to rule out the possibility of contamination.

Such a calamity has already occurred before within the framework of the NSU investigations. In the case of police officer Michele Kiesewetter, who was murdered in Heilbronn in 2007, the police was searching for the "Phantom of Heilbronn" for two years.

The DNA traces of a mysterious woman were not only found at the Heilbronn crime scene, but also at 40 others.

It was only in 2009 that the DNA turned out to belong to an employee of the company that produced the cotton swabs used for tracking. The contamination had taken place during the packaging process. It is not impossible in the case of the DNA of Uwe Böhnhardt something similar has happened.

Theory 3: There is a link between both cases

It is not the first time that the name of Uwe Böhnhardt is mentioned during the investigation into the murder of a child
. On July 6, 1993, the body of a nine-year-old boy was found on the banks of the Saale River in Jena. The case is still unresolved.

One of the main suspects of the prosecution was Enrico T., a friend of Böhnhardt.

T. had in turn pointed the finger at Böhnhardt during interrogations. As BR Online reported, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office confirms that Böhnhardt was also a witness at that time.

Moreover, the attorney of the family of one of the victims of the NSU stated that in the process files several acquaintances of Böhnhardt are connected with cases of child abuse.

For instance, a close confidant of Böhnhardt and head of "Thuringian Homeland Security" is currently behind bars with Tino Brandt on a long-term imprisonment for child abuse in 66 cases.

Child *advertiser censored* was found on a computer belonging to Beate Zschäpe.
At the time, these charges were dropped, because they seemed minor in comparison to those of terrorism and murder. This all changed dramatically when Peggy's remains and the piece of cloth with DNA were found.

TOOK HER SIX WEEKS TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION

On this day, Zschäpe also delivered the long-awaited answer to the question of the murder case of Peggy.

"Frau Zschäpe, do you have information about Peggy Knobloch, that you do not have from the media?", the Court had asked her six weeks ago.

Zschäpe's answer is the shortest possible: "No."

A police DNA blunder led officers to wrongly link a neo-Nazi cell's killing spree to the unsolved murder of the 'German Madeleine McCann', it has emerged.

Officers reported last October that genetic material found near the skeleton of nine-year-old schoolgirl Peggy Knobloch, who went missing in 2001, matched that of Uwe Boehnhardt.

This seemed to connect the child's death to the 2000-2007 racist murder spree on the National Socialist Underground, far-right militants who shot dead nine men with migrant roots and a policewoman.

But it has now been established that the DNA found near the girl's corpse was in fact inadvertently transferred there through 'police equipment' from the corpse of late neo-Nazi gunman Boehnhardt, said prosecutor Daniel Goetz.

What an excruciating ordeal for this family.

Nearly 17 Years Later, Police Finally Discover What Happened To Missing 9-Year-Old Girl

"...But it appears Peggy was killed or buried about 9 miles from her home in Bavaria, authorities told The Telegraph. Police said Peggy was probably killed elsewhere, and her killer or killers moved her body to the thickly wooded area.

“Obviously wild animals picked up the scent and dug up the remains,” Thomas Villwock of the local prosecutor’s office told the newspaper. “They were discovered by a mushroom-picker on [July 2]. Personal items were also found that pointed towards Peggy...”

PEGGY'S MURDER REMAINS UNSOLVED

On May 7, 2001 Peggy Knobloch, then nine years old, disappears from school in Lichtenberg on her way home. For years, the case caused a sensation nationwide as a "murder case without a corpse".

A mentally handicapped innkeeper's son from Lichtenberg was sentenced to life in prison in April 2004 in a trial for the murder of Peggy. The trial later turned out to have been manipulated by the head of the second special police commission. In May 2014, a retrial before the Bayreuth Regional Court ended with an acquittal.

In July 2016, bones were discovered in the Thuringian Forest near Rodacherbrunn, only about 15 kilometres from Lichtenberg - the mortal remains of little Peggy.

But nothing happened after that, the investigators still have no hot leads. "We have no news," Chief Public Prosecutor Herbert Potzel told the German Press Agency on Tuesday.

17 years ago today. RIP Peggy Knobloch :rose:

German police question suspect in girl's 2001 disappearance

BERLIN (AP) - German authorities said Friday that they may have made a breakthrough in their investigation of the mysterious 2001 disappearance of a 9-year-old girl.

Bavarian officials said a 41-year-old man has told them he transported the body of Peggy Knobloch, who disappeared on the way home from school, to woods in neighboring Thuringia state where her remains were found in 2016.

Polizei gibt neue Details bekannt: Geständnis im Fall Peggy!

17 years after the disappearance of little Peggy (†) from Lichtenberg in Upper Franconia, the police are apparently on the verge of a breakthrough! And yet the murderer of the little girl may never be convicted ...

The meanwhile third special commission announced today in a press conference: Manuel S., suspected in the Peggy case. (41) told the police that he had taken the girl's body to a forest. According to investigators, he also admitted to having burned her school bag afterwards.

But he did not kill the schoolgirl, S. claims !

Rather, he took her body from a man he knew by name. The girl had been lying lifeless in a bus shelter in her hometown of Lichtenberg, S. had even tried to resuscitate the child according to her own statements. For tactical reasons, the police did not want to give any information on who was supposed to have handed over the body to S.. They continue to investigate Manuel S. on suspicion of murder!

Brisant: Manuel S. could no longer be convicted for the crime of having removed the body because it was statute-barred. Only a murder sentence could still be handed down.

Police forces had turned his farm in Marktleuthen (Bavaria) upside down and searched his parents' estate in Lichtenberg at the same time.

Mordfall Peggy: Vorwurf gegen Manuel S. lautet Mord – Ulvi K. schwer belastet

According to FOCUS online information, S. is said to have heavily incriminated Ulvi K. during the interrogations.

In August 2001, the then 23-year-old Ulvi K. was arrested. He had already committed several assaults on other children and is said to have killed Peggy in order to cover up a sexual crime. The innkeeper's son, who has been mentally handicapped since an early childhood meningitis, confessed to the sexual abuse of Peggy and three other children. Later, however, he revoked this confession.

On April 30, 2004, Ulvi K. was sentenced to life imprisonment after several trial interruptions. Years later, an important prosecution witness revokes his testimony against Ulvi K. and makes serious accusations against the investigating authorities. The proceedings are reopened. On 14 May 2014 Ulvi K. is acquitted.

Someone handed him the body of a dead child and what did he do? he buried it when he should have gone to the police. Now that they finally found him, he starts blaming the man who was first convicted and later acquitted for the crime. Basically saying: he did it anyway and I could have given you the proof years ago.

It beggars belief. But so did the previous developments in this case.

Lichtenberg/Bayreuth - Is the murderer of little Peggy (†) arrested at last?

The meanwhile third special commission announced today on a press conference new details of the child murder that has remained unsolved for 17 years. According to this, the suspect Manuel S. (41) told the investigators the name of the suspected murderer!

S. told the police that he had taken over the body of the girl from a man he knew by name. He then took the body to a piece of woodland. According to investigators, he also admitted to having burned her school bag afterwards.

Now the police are urgently looking for witnesses who made observations on the day of the crime (7 May 2001)!

The investigators ask:

Who saw the gold-coloured Audi 80 of Manuel S. on Monday, 7 May 2001?

Who noticed people in or near the vehicle, even Peggy?

Who has ever seen Manuel S. with Peggy before?

Who can associate the colours shown here with renovation work in Lichtenberg?

1.bild.jpg

These paint particles were found both on the girl's body and in Manuel S.'s garbage. S. renovated his house at the time of the crime, also painting the walls.

In addition, the police and public prosecutor's office announced these clues at the press conference:

► The last time Peggy was seen was at 13.24 at Henri-Marteau-Platz in Lichtenberg.

► Manuel S. was proven to have been in the former Sparkasse branch at 3.17 pm.

1,w=993,q=high,c=0.bild.jpg

This police map shows where Peggy and Manuel S. were on the day of the murder, as well as the nearby site where the remains were found.

Neither S. nor the man named by him are in custody. Reason: The suspicion is not strong enough according to police. Therefore the appeal to citizens.

► S. described the course of events as follows: The girl had been lying lifeless in a bus shelter in Lichtenberg; according to his own statements, he had even tried to revive the child. Then he made it into the forest. Only in July 2016 did mushroom pickers find the mortal remains of Peggy in a forest near Rodacherbrunn (Thuringia), a few kilometres from Lichtenberg.

Those paint particles..... were they found in his garbage after 17 years? wouldn't it be easier to scratch the walls?

IMHO this is incriminating evidence and they throw it out in the open. LE must be either desperate or certain to do so.

The trail of the pollen expert

The fact that S. is now the focus of attention is also due to unusual investigation methods, as the public prosecutor's office informs us in a statement: a pollen expert had found microscopically small traces of peat on the remains of the corpse, which match the traces of pavement slabs from the suspect's house. S. is said to have carried out planting work on the day of the crime - this is how the peat traces could be explained.

The expert also found microparticles on Peggy's mortal remains during a forensic pollen analysis. According to the investigators, these match the traces of paint found on the 41-year-old's renovation waste - S. was busy with extensive renovation work in early summer 2001.

In addition, an alleged alibi of the man seems to have burst in the meantime: contrary to his previous statements, according to investigators, S. was on the road in Lichtenberg on the day of the crime. This is documented by video recordings from a bank branch in which he was demonstrably present at 3.17 pm. Investigators also discovered the man's car at the time, which had been untraceable for a long time, and investigated it using forensic techniques.

Based on these new findings, last week officials had searched the premises of the suspect S. in Marktleuthen in the district of Wunsiedel as well as in Lichtenberg.

Will Manuel S. perhaps soon be on trial as a suspected murderer? That is unclear, S. is not even in prison because of the accusations so far. "Detention presupposes an urgent suspicion", said public prosecutor Daniel Götz, "we don't see that at the moment".

Whether or not this will change depends on whether the police receive new information after the most recent call for witnesses. The investigators want to know who saw the car in question on 7 May 2001, who saw S. together with Peggy or who saw other people in his golden car. The extent to which the investigators are dependent on tips and eyewitness reports was made clear by public prosecutor Götz: a reward of 30,000 euros was still being offered, he said.
